Malaysian faces capital punishment after $540,000 drug bust at Naia
Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: Nikko Fabian Text Size: While Malaysia has abolished the death penalty for most crimes, its citizens remain vulnerable to the harsh penalties imposed under Philippine law. MANILA: A Malaysian faces capital punishment – the death penalty – after Philippine authorities seized P29.7 million (about US$540,000) worth of shabu (methamphetamine) from his luggage at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 3. The arrest, a joint operation between the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group, highlights the escalating war on drugs in the Philippines and the severe consequences faced by foreign nationals involved in drug trafficking. Advertisement The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was apprehended last Saturday following a multi-stage inspection process. X-ray scans, K-9 detection, and a thorough physical examination of his luggage revealed 4,368 grams of shabu concealed within a suspicious package. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed the substance. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Kota Kinabalu: Federal Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister Datuk Arthur Kurup (pic) expressed concern that the Ikan Salarong (Pangasius hypophthalmus) could face extinction without proper conservation measures. The fish species, native to the Pegalungan community in Pensiangan, where is Member of Parliament, is renowned for its superior taste and considered better than the well-known Patin. Advertisement 'I am actually worried that it could become an endangered species due to the lack of sustainable efforts. 'As fisheries fall under my Ministry, I am working to implement conservation efforts to preserve this species. 'We hope it can eventually become a heritage fish, which will help elevate the community here and improve their livelihood in the long run,' Arthur said. Kurup said the Department of Fisheries is spearheading initial conservation efforts, while the Government is also working on upgrading jetties around areas like Salong, Pegalungan and some areas in Pensiangan, to provide better access to the river. Sabah – animal-friendly?
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 By: Shirley Khong Text Size: Ziggy was an abandoned dog but now has the most loving, happy home. Not everyone likes dogs but the important thing is do not harm them! Many people want to own a dog not because they love dogs. It because it is a pedigree that can be got for free! Another reason people want a dog is because when it is a puppy it is 'oh soooo cute!' When asked, the children will promise heaven and earth to look after it, bath it, feed it, clean up after it etc. But when boredom sets in the poor pup is completely ignored and will be lying around neglected probably sitting in its own pee and poop! Ziggy was abandoned probably because his grooming became too costly and a nuisance. Advertisement Nugget was probably abandoned because of all the tumours she has and the owners unwilling to spend money abandoned her. This is humans for you. When they get fed up the first thing that creeps into their mind is to take the easy way out. To give to a shelter would cost money and they probably know that they are hard to rehome. As such cruelty stems from humans sad to say! Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Lembaga Padi dan Beras Sabah: The game changer?
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Faridah Suffian Text Size: In Sabah, rice is more than a commodity, it is a cultural staple. THE revival of the Lembaga Padi dan Beras Sabah (LPBS) marks a significant shift in Sabah's commitment to food security. Established as the lead agency, LPBS aims to strengthen local rice production and reduce the state's dependence on imported rice. At present, Sabah contributes only 4.7pc to national rice production, and its rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) stands at a mere 22.8pc. The remainder is met through imports, leaving the state vulnerable to external shocks such as climate change, trade disruptions, and geopolitical tensions. Advertisement Malaysia's rice production remains heavily concentrated in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Kedah, Perlis, Penang, and Kelantan. In contrast, Sabah offers a largely untapped opportunity for rice diversification, with its vast underutilised land and rich indigenous knowledge systems. The revival of LPBS is therefore not just a state-level concern, it holds potential to contribute meaningfully to national food security goals. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Call to reflect MA63 equal status: Petronas, Mara scholarships
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Elias said in the case of Mara, a recent viral video indicated bumiputra students offered to study abroad for courses costing up to RM1 million or more reportedly comprising mainly peninsula students, although Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan natives are also bumiputras. LABUAN: There is concern that the cutback on expenditure by Petronas which will see up to 5,000 or 10 per cent of its workforce being laid off may also impact its commitment towards education, particularly the awarding of scholarships. Bumiputra rights activist George Elias said even before this new development, Petronas had never been transparent to the people of Labuan, Sarawak and Sabah on whether the Borneo territories were getting their fair share of scholarships. Advertisement 'There was no breakdown on how much went towards scholarships. 'We do not know whether the scholarships even reflected the one-third equal composition under amendments to the Federal Constitution in 2022 that restored the status of Sabah and Sarawak to that of equal partnership in the federation as per the Malaysia Agreement (MA63).
