Clayface writer reveals he was inspired by one of DC's most iconic animated series: "That two-parter knocked me out"

Horror writer and director Mike Flanagan just revealed some exciting details about his vision for DC Studios' upcoming Clayface movie. Although his script is being rewritten and the project is out of his hands, Flanagan got fans excited by revealing his main influence while writing – the two-part episode Feat of Clay from the beloved animated show Batman: The Animated Series. "Of course it was. I mean that is the perfect [story]," Flanagan told ComicBook when asked about his inspirations. "Feat of Clay, Ron Perlman, to me, that's it. That two-parter knocked me out. The short answer is that is absolutely what inspired my script. That is the world I wanted to live in. Batman: The Animated Series when I was growing up was my Batman. As much as [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, The Animated Series really was my Batman." Feat of Clay is a two-part story included in season 1 of Batman: The Animated Series (episodes 4 and 5) in 1992, and follows the origins of Clayface. First featured in the DC comics in June 1940, the story follows actor Matt Hagen as he turns to a life of crime after suffering a tragic accident and taking on the personality of one of his horror roles through an experiment. He is made from a strange, clay-like substance. Best known for his work in hit series like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Flanagan's version of Clayface was said to be leaning more into the character's horror aspects, but it's hard to say at this point how much of that will remain. "I don't know what they're doing with Clayface," he clarified. "I'm not directing it, and that filmmaker will need to make it their own," Flanagan continued, "I know that they're doing work on the script. I'm off doing other things now, I really hope it remains true to the spirit of what I wanted it to be. But it's not my movie, so I'll be in the audience with you, anxious to see how it comes out." Last month, DC Studios announced that Drive screenwriter Hossein Amini would be rewriting Flanagan's script, which came as a shock since fans were excited to have horror legend Flanagan writing the script after he pitched the idea via Twitter way back in 2023. The film is still scheduled to begin production in October in the UK. Clayface is set to be released on September 11, 2026, as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Clayface DCU Movie Enlists The Gentlemen Star For Lead Role

DC Studios has finally unveiled the first major cast member for its upcoming Clayface DC Universe movie. Production is expected to begin later this year at Warner Bros.' Leavesden studio in the UK, just in time for its September 11, 2026 theatrical release. Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries has officially landed the leading role of Clayface in DC Studios' upcoming live-action adaptation of the fan-favorite DC villain. According to the report, he won the role against a lineup of rising British actors, including Jack O'Connell, Tom Blyth, Leo Woodall, and George MacKay. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn also shared a statement regarding Harries' casting, revealing that they were 'blown away' by the actor's audition. The project will be part of the DC Universe's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters saga. Harries is best known for his supporting roles in movies like 2019's The Gentlemen and 2023's Kandahar. He also appeared in British shows such as Suspicion, The Split, and Doctor Who. The Clayface movie will be directed by Speak No Evil director James Watkins from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan. It is produced by Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris, with Chantal Nong serving as an executive producer. The titular character is a fan-favorite Batman villain who has shapeshifting abilities, first created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane for DC Comics. The adaptation will reportedly center around 'a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant.' SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW Will Reportedly Introduce the Sklarian Raiders — GeekTyrant

DC Studios' Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is already deep into production, and with several actors having wrapped, it's safe to say we're getting closer to seeing what kind of wild, cosmic ride through the DC Universe it will deliver. Now, according to a new report, the movie may debut an obscure but dangerous group of all-female space pirates known as the Sklarian Raiders. According to Nexus Point News, The Brothers Sun and Sex Education star Alice Hewkin has joined the cast in a supporting role, reportedly playing one of these Sklarians. If you're unfamiliar, these aren't your average space scoundrels. The Sklarian Raiders made their first appearance back in the late '70s in Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes , and while they're known as ruthless thieves, they've also been portrayed as having their own code of ethics. The Sklarians don't appear in Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow comic, so if they are being included in the movie, it raises a few questions. Are they being woven into the narrative to expand the intergalactic world Kara is traveling through? Are they part of a subplot involving another cosmic antihero? Maybe they are connected to Jason Momoa's Lobo, either working alongside the character, or gunning for him. The film has a great cast that includes Eve Ridley ( 3 Body Problem ), who is playing Ruthye Mary Knolle, the determined young girl who joins Supergirl on her bloody quest across the stars. Matthias Schoenaerts ( The Old Guard ) is set to portray Krem of the Yellow Hills, a villain in the story. Krypto the Superdog will reportedly be along for the ride too. Recently, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham were announced as Zor-El and Alura, Kara's Kryptonian parents. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow aims to redefine Kara Zor-El for a new generation. The version of Supergirl we'll see here is,'much more hardcore.' James Gunn explained. 'In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She's much more hardcore, she's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing.' According to the official synopsis, the film follows Kara as she "travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge." The movie is set to be released on June 26, 2026.

Robert Eggers To Write & Direct 'A Christmas Carol'; James Gunn Confirms New 'Wonder Woman' Movie

A film can have the perfect script, the perfect set, or the perfect actor, but without the right director, it will ultimately flop. Believe it or not, this is a belief that has been tested over and over again, and has been the reason why many supposed surefire films died in the water, while other unassuming stories became household names. With that in mind, we're incredibly thankful that two visionary directors are helming the following two highly-anticipated films. Featuring an exciting reboot and a classic retelling, here's our report on what's happening in the world of cinema. Robert Eggers To Bring 'A Christmas Carol' To Life; Willem Dafoe May Be Lead Actor Following the successful Christmas release of 'Nosferatu', director Robert Eggers is looking to scare and terrorise folks again, namely the greedy rich, with another holiday film, one that is more apt for the season. As per Deadline's report, Eggers is working alongside Warner Bros. to bring the classic ghost story 'A Christmas Carol' to the big screen. Not only that, but it has also been reported by insiders that a name is already attached to the project and is set to play the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge, one Willem Dafoe. Dafoe has been Eggers' muse as of late, as the two have collaborated across three different films: 'The Lighthouse', 'The Northman', and 'Nosferatu'. Once again, Eggers is taking a highly popular classic story and reimagining and retelling it for a modern audience. And much like his previous works, the filmmaker is taking a hands-on approach, as he will be taking on the roles of director and script writer for the film. For those who are unfamiliar with the original source material, 'A Christmas Carol' focuses on Ebenezer Scrooge, an initially cold-hearted miser who absolutely loathes Christmas. He is then visited by his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Originally penned by legendary English fictionist Charles Dickens in 1843, the story has seen multiple reinterpretations and still persists today not only as a Christmas tale, but also as a critical piece of English literature. When you give it enough thought, this is actually a match made in heaven. Throughout his career, Eggers has been well known for setting his films in the 1800s. Add to that his meticulous obsession with quality, authenticity, and accuracy, and it's no surprise that period films have become his speciality. Combine that with the story's innate supernatural elements, and you have the makings of a truly epic film. In the meantime though, we must wait for Eggers to complete his work on his current feature project 'Werwulf', which will start filming later this year. New 'Wonder Woman' Now In The Works We are roughly a month or so away from the highly-anticipated release of the new 'Superman' movie, the first major entry in DC Studios' new DCU. But before the reimagined Kryptonian can take flight, Gunn has already broken the news about the company's latest project in the development pipeline, and it's about the Amazonian princess we all know and love. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn has revealed that a 'Wonder Woman' movie is officially in the works. The DC CEO has gone on record saying that the 'Wonder Woman' movie is 'being written right now', but added the small detail that the writing process is 'slow moving, but it's moving.' As to how much has been written is anyone's guess right now. Additionally, Gunn has not confirmed who is writing the script either, so it is an absolute mystery that we have to get back to at a later date. What is confirmed, as per Variety's reporting, is that Gal Gadot will not be reprising her role due to various internal conflicts that have happened at DC. So now, it is an even bigger mystery on who Gunn and co. are eyeing for the role. DC has taken a similar approach to Marvel and its MCU in that they are planning to release a steady stream of content, both made for streaming and the big screen, to help shape the continuity of the DC Universe across multiple forms of media. The first chapter, dubbed 'Gods and Monsters', is designed to be the foundation of the core characters that we might see in future films as well as set the tone for subsequent chapters. With other projects now underway, such as Craig Gillespie's 'Supergirl' and HBO's 'Lanterns' coming to fruition, we're slowly seeing what they mean by 'Gods and Monsters'.
