James Gunn Says SGT. ROCK Is Still Marching Forward and Teases Secret Project Project He Feared Would Be Ripped Off — GeekTyrant

Despite reports that Sgt. Rock had been shelved, James Gunn is here to clarify that Easy Company isn't done just yet. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the DC Studios co-head gave an encouraging, though cautious, update on the war-themed project, originally set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino with Colin Farrell attached to star. 'I feel like we're in a pretty good place. We're still moving forward, but it's not going to would Peter want me to say here? ... So it's still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn't exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.' So while the original vision may not survive the reshuffle, Gunn makes it clear that Sgt. Rock hasn't been left for dead. That wasn't all Gunn had to say. When asked if there were other projects cooking behind the scenes, he teased something far more mysterious, something he's been keeping under wraps since the very beginning out of fear another studio (cough Marvel) might try to swipe the concept. 'My favorite thing has not been announced at all. One of the scripts people kind of know about. My script people don't know about. The other script people don't know about. 'So it's mostly stuff people don't know about.... A couple of those things [announced in January 2023] are in pretty good shape in terms of coming up, but there was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things.' That's the kind of statement that's going to fire up speculation across the fandom. A brand-new idea, so potent and original that it had to be kept hidden? Sounds like the kind of curveball that could define Gunn's DCU if it delivers. For now, we're left to wait and wonder. But between the resurrection of Sgt. Rock and the tease of a secret weapon still under wraps, Gunn's DC universe is clearly still evolving.

James Gunn Says 'Very Famous Movie Actor' Is Writing a DC Elseworlds Movie Script — GeekTyrant

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-head James Gunn dropped an intriguing little bombshell that a very famous movie actor is currently writing a script for an Elseworlds project. But before anyone gets too excited, Gunn made it clear that the project is far from a done deal. This is what he said: 'The script still needs to be good. We're not going to make it unless we like the script. But I think that there are exceptions. I told it to one person who came in and pitched something that was an Elseworlds tale. It was a very, very, very famous movie actor. 'I said, 'It depends on how the screenplay comes out … If it's a masterpiece, I'll make it, but it has to be a masterpiece.' [Laughs] And he is like, 'I don't know if it's a masterpiece.' He got all funny. 'He's still working on it, though. He is still trying to do it, so we'll see. Masterpiece might be pushing it, but it's got to be really great.' So who's the actor? Gunn didn't say, and that mystery might be half the fun for now. Still, this gives us a peek behind the curtain at how Elseworlds projects are being considered under the new DC regime. For Gunn, they need to be just as strong as the main DCU films to warrant their own space. He continued: 'If it's an Elseworlds tale, then it's worth telling something that might tend to confuse a few people. But also part of our thing is really being clear about what is Elseworlds and what is DCU.' So far, the Elseworlds banner only officially includes Matt Reeves' Batman universe, which covers The Batman , its upcoming sequel, and the spin-off Penguin series. The Batman Part II has been delayed to 2027, and Gunn has asked fans to be patient while Reeves finishes the script. Meanwhile, DC Studios is focused on launching its new shared universe. After Creature Commandos gave us a taste, things kick off this summer with Superman , followed by Supergirl , Clayface , and more DCU entries over the next few years. The tricky part here, as Gunn notes, is avoiding audience confusion. Juggling multiple Batmen or having parallel versions of major heroes can get messy. Gunn has even admitted that Batman is currently 'a problem' for DC. Which brings us back to this A-lister's script. Even if it turns out to be something special, there's no guarantee it'll ever make it to production. The future of any Elseworlds project will hinge on timing, quality, and talent. But, I do love that they are looking at making self-contained, creatively driven comic book movies without the commitment of a cinematic universe.

‘Superman' Director James Gunn Admits ‘Funky' CG Shot ‘Kind of Got by Me,' Pulled It From the Movie

If you thought a preview shot of the Man of Steel flying in the teaser trailer for the upcoming 'Superman' film looked bad, worry not — James Gunn did too. The 'Superman' writer, director and DC Studios co-CEO shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Thursday that an unfinished shot of Kal-El flying through an arctic landscape 'kind of got by' him in an early teaser. In fact, the shot bothered him so much, it will not appear in the final cut of the film. The shot in question, featured at the end of a 30-second teaser released Jan. 26, follows Superman from behind as he soars through the arctic — likely, either coming or going from his Fortress of Solitude. When Superman approaches a rocky structure, the camera switches angles to cover his face as he does a barrel roll. What follows is a shot of Superman flying straight at the camera — with actor David Corenswet's visage looking strangely static and warped. 'The part of him flying, it was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background,' Gunn said. 'So all the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way.' You can see for yourself in the teaser below. Gunn owned up to the mistake, saying he didn't look as closely at the TV spot as he would a full trailer. The shot faced broad criticism at the time of its release; however, it appears that, even then, Superman's flight had plenty of defenders. Gunn spoke to the difficulty of depicting a hero with such 'simplicity and elegance' as Superman. Gunn has directed flying superheroes before, including Star-Lord and Adam Warlock in his 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy. However, he has never depicted flight on a character as graceful as the Man of Steel. Though Gunn removed this shot from 'Superman,' fans will have to wait until July 11 to see how the director handles the character's flight overall. The post 'Superman' Director James Gunn Admits 'Funky' CG Shot 'Kind of Got by Me,' Pulled It From the Movie appeared first on TheWrap.

James Gunn's Superman set to soar at US box office with $135 million opening: Early tracking

James Gunn's Superman is projected to rake in $135 million at the U.S. box office, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. With three weeks remaining until its July 11 release, early tracking numbers place the highly anticipated DC film firmly among the studio's top openers. If the current projection holds, Superman would secure a strong debut—though still short of 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened at $166 million. It would, however, outpace 2013's Man of Steel, which launched with $116 million. According to data from National Research Group (NRG) accessed by The Hollywood Reporter, the tracking range lies between $125 million and $145 million. DC Studios and Warner Bros. insiders are reportedly setting expectations slightly lower, estimating between $90 million and $125 million. Social media momentum has led some box office analysts to forecast an even higher opening—up to $175 million. If that materializes, Gunn's reboot would become the biggest DC debut to date, surpassing Batman v Superman and edging out Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. The film marks the first original release under James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership of DC Studios. With the franchise undergoing a complete reset, the success of Superman will likely set the tone for its future. David Corenswet leads the cast as Clark Kent, opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Also starring are Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced. The storyline reintroduces Superman's origin with modern updates—including the fan-favourite Krypto the Superdog. My role at DC Studios is all creative, says James Gunn

James Gunn's job at DC Studios is "all creative". The 58-year-old filmmaker and his long-time producer Peter Safran became co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios in 2022, and James has now explained how he's balanced his role at DC with the demands of writing and directing the new Superman movie. He told Entertainment Weekly: "The balance isn't between creative and business. The balance is between specific creative and macro creative. "Peter Safran, he does all our meetings, he does all the business stuff. "For me, it's about writing and directing, but it's also about shepherding other writers and directors. It's about trying to come up with other ideas for other shows, other movies that I give to other writers to take care of. So my job is all creative. "Occasionally, there are other things that you need to do, of course, as any writer/director does, but mostly it's taking care of the creative storytelling across all platforms." James acknowledges that he "can't do everything" at DC Studios. The filmmaker - whose previous directing credits include Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad - said: "It's a little bit too much at times. I can't do everything. "I've had to try to focus on what I can focus on, which has been part of my learning process over the past couple years of having this job. If I try to do everything, it's too little of any one thing, so I need to really focus on certain pieces of what's happening." Superman is the first movie that James has written and directed in DC's new era. And the director admits that Superman is crucial to the success or failure of the DC brand. He explained: "He's one of the three biggest characters at DC, one of the most important characters in all of Warner Bros.' catalogue, but was also really the figurehead of DC in a lot of ways because he's the first ever superhero. So it seemed like the right movie to do first." James previously claimed that "people are looking for heroes right now". The director also revealed that he was feeling optimistic about the David Corenswet-led Superman film. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at a DC press event, he explained: "I think he's the right Superman because he is a character that stands for something that is solid, stands for basic human morals, basic human integrity, basic belief in protecting others and protecting the weak being good to people and being honest. "People are looking for heroes right now. They are looking for values of goodness, looking for people who are good and decent human beings. And Superman is that."
