Will Spain serve up a helping of pain for England's misfiring youngsters?

Venganza is on the cards in Trnava on Saturday night when England take on Spain at the European Under-21 Championship quarter-finals. There are constant reminders on the Channel 4 coverage in the UK that 'we' are the holders, despite the fact there are only a couple of remaining members from the squad that defeated La Rojita in the final in Batumi two years ago. It's a night that Oliver Skipp will never forget. There is another stark difference between then and now: England were properly decent at that point. This current crop have stumbled their way into the last eight like a weary boozer, six pints deep, picking his way through an All Bar One terrace on a hot day. Galavanting is not part of this England team's repertoire; instead meekness is the summary of what they have offered. After a promising defeat of the Czech Republic, they stumbled to a goalless draw against the might of Slovenia before losing to Germany B in their final group game. Spain, on the other hand, have breezed to this stage, sweeping past Slovakia (3-2) and Romania (2-1). The more worrying news for England is that the Spanish are favourites and an inquisition should be expected. They've still got memories of Curtis Jones's winner in Georgia two years ago, although the more galling moment remains James Trafford making an injury-time penalty save from Abel Ruiz to secure the silverware for England. Revenge, it seems, is best served in a partially full stadium in Slovakia's seventh biggest city. If we're looking for positives out of the Germany game for England, then young Bournemouth midfield scurrier Alex Scott, who scored in the second half, was decent. He reckons it's only a matter of time before the floodgates open for Carsley's pups. 'The lads score goals every single day but it's not quite clicked yet in the games. The quality we have in this team, it's a matter of time before the goals start flying in,' he whooped. They'll need to win possession off the ball-hogging Spaniards before they can pepper the goal with shots. How will they do that, then? 'Replicate what the lads did two years ago,' he mused. 'It is going to be a tough team. Every Spain team is very good on the ball, very calm and composed.' In preparing to soften any blow, England need not worry, even if a hammering is handed out. Why? Because they have one of their own in Spain's squad. Leeds United striker Mateo 'Matty' Joseph Fernández-Regatillo is leading the line despite possessing 10 England Under-20 caps. Born in Santander to an English father and Spanish mother, Joseph spent the first 19 years of his life in his homeland before being attracted by the bright lights of Yorkshire to learn about real football, none of that tiki-taka nonsense. Giving Joseph a proper football education might now backfire on England, but it does guarantee that at least one proud bulldog will make it to the semi-finals, whatever happens. In the past few days, thirsty shoppers in supermarkets around Britain may have spotted a big promotional display from an energy drink offering them a chance to meet England's Lionesses. So far, so ordinary, right? Not if you were doing your big shop in Cardiff, where Tesco upset regulars who would have preferred to get the chance to meet their own national team's players instead. The Welsh FA's chief suit, Noel Mooney, took to his social media disgrace of choice to roar: 'We are Cymru!' And one shopper told the BBC it was 'deeply offensive', adding that Tesco should have 'read the room' with Wales taking on England in Euro 2025 next month. 'There would be no shortage of takers for Jones'

Over on our live page our chief football writer Phil McNulty has been taking your Should Liverpool sell Curtis Jones?Phil McNulty: There seems to be mixed opinions among Liverpool fans about Curtis Jones, but he does appear to be highly-rated by Arne Slot and England head coach Thomas is going to be some tough competition at Liverpool next season, especially once Florian Wirtz comes into the equation, so Jones will want plenty of game time with the World Cup coming up next could be a big factor. I would be reluctant to sell, but Liverpool will want to recoup some of their lavish spending and there would be no shortage of takers should Jones come on the same will apply to Harvey Elliott, who has already hinted that he cannot afford to be sitting on the sidelines with a World Cup coming up.

England jeered after lackluster win over Andorra

England secured a lackluster 1-0 victory against Andorra in a World Cup qualifier, with fans booing the team's performance at the end of both halves. The match, held in Barcelona due to Andorra 's stadium not being ready, saw England dominate possession but struggle to break down Andorra 's defense. Harry Kane scored the only goal in the 50th minute, converting Noni Madueke's cross after an initial save by Andorra 's goalkeeper Iker Alvarez. Despite the Win, England 's slow play and lack of incision led to frustration among the travelling fans, with some leaving early and expressing their displeasure. Andorra 's goalkeeper, Iker Alvarez, made several important saves, while England 's Jude Bellingham and Curtis Jones had attempts blocked in the first half.

England player ratings: Madueke the pick of a bad bunch against Andorra

England remain unbeaten in World Cup qualifying following a 1-0 victory against Andorra who are bottom of Group K. Captain Harry Kane scored the only goal of the game, thanks to a Noni Madueke assist. The Chelsea winger was England's best player on the night, but who else impressed? Jordan Pickford Had nothing to do apart from keep his concentration. No saves to make in the end for the England No1, who has Dean Henderson pushing for starts. 6 Curtis Jones Started at right-back but was 'inverted', playing in central midfield when England won possession. Had a shot blocked in the first half. 5 Ezri Konsa Part of a back-three when England had the ball and only had to keep position as Andorra were not interested in attacking. 6 Dan Burn Guilty of giving the ball away trying to bring the ball out of defence. Was not troubled by Andorra's attack, obviously, but could have shown more. 4 Reece James Found himself as a third centre-back for much of the time, rather than raiding down the flank. Is an option for Tuchel at left-back now. 5 Jude Bellingham 'Home' game for the Spanish-based midfielder but he could not impose himself on the game. With the Club World Cup coming up, this game was not really needed in his schedule. 5 Jordan Henderson Making his first start for England since Nov 2023, he was the only holding midfielder and had a disciplined role. Tried to carry the ball forward. 5 Morgan Rogers Looked to carry the ball forward but found his paths blocked off as he cut in from the right flank. Tuchel clearly likes him from opening three games. 5 Morgan Rogers 🔥 @England | @AVFCOfficial — ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 7, 2025 Cole Palmer Deployed as one of Tuchel's No10s but struggled to create chances for team-mates or himself as space was so tight in the areas he likes to operate in. 4 Noni Madueke Set up Kane's opener with a scuffed cross across the face of the goal. Earlier had shot from edge of the area saved. 6 England goal number 7️⃣2️⃣ for @HKane ⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 — England (@England) June 7, 2025 Harry Kane Scored from close range for his 72nd international goal, breaking the deadlock to the relief of England fans. Missed from six yards earlier. 5 Substitutes Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Jones 61) Eberichi Eze (for Palmer 65) Declan Rice (for Jones 81) Anthony Gordon (for Rogers 81) Morgan Gibbs-White (Bellingham 90) Subs not used Henderson (g), Trafford (g), Walker, Colwill, Toney, Lewis-Skelly, Chalobah.
