‘Ghost elephant' seen for first time in years; is it a lone survivor?
A camera trap in Niokolo-Koba National Park captured rare video of what might be the last remaining elephant in Senegal, last seen in 2019. The new footage was captured by Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, and Senegal's Directorate of National Parks, and it shows Ousmane, an elephant named after a park ranger and known as the ghost elephant. 'Rare sightings, stealthy behavior and near-mythical status due to their low numbers have earned this lone bull the title of 'ghost elephant,'' Alyssa Cuevas, a Panthera spokeswoman, told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors. The black-and-white footage was captured as the elephant strolled by the camera at night, giving it a ghost-like appearance. IFL Science posted it on YouTube. 'When it was last spotted in January 2019, it was thought to be one of only 5 to 10 elephants remaining in the park – a drastic change from the hundreds that once called Niokolo-Koba home and a shocking reminder of the implications of poaching and habitat loss,' Cuevas told For The Win Outdoors. 'Shortly thereafter, a scientific study by Panthera and DPN revealed the male is likely the only elephant left in Senegal, although an anecdotal report might suggest the presence of several elephants in the area.' Elephant numbers in Senegal have declined to near extinction, but this new sighting has 'sparked discussions of greater protections for the elusive elephants that remain, including whether it might be possible to establish a breeding population in the park,' IFL Science reported. Year Before Ahmedabad Plane Crash, Whistleblower's Boeing 787 Dreamliner Flaw Claim
Air India's flight AI 171, with 242 on board flying to London, crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad this afternoon, in one of the worst aviation disasters in aviation history. The plane was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner - a fuel-efficient, wide-body aircraft that is the pride of the US company's catalogue for long-distance flights. Despite being marketed as one of the safest and most advanced aircraft in the skies, the Dreamliner has been linked to several technical faults. In fact, the crash has put the spotlight on claims by a Boeing engineer last year, who said that the 787 Dreamliner suffers from assembly defects that threaten safety. Whistleblower Sam Salehpour - who worked at Boeing for nearly two decades - accused the company of putting profit over safety, and retaliating against him after he raised concerns by "involuntarily" transferring him to the 777 program. Attorneys for the whistleblower said, "Rather than heeding his warnings, Boeing prioritised getting the planes to market as quickly as possible, despite the known, well-substantiated issues Mr Salehpour raised." He later told the US Senate about structural problems in the Dreamliner's fuselage and claimed that small gaps and improper assembly could cause early wear and possible structural failure. Boeing had released a detailed defence of the aircraft, saying it is "fully confident" in the Dreamliner and denying charges it retaliated against the worker. The Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation based on Mr Salehpour's stunning claims. It later said the 787s in use at this time "are in compliance with current safety regulations". In June last year, another whistleblower stepped forward, alleging he was retaliated against after flagging potentially dangerous manufacturing problems on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Richard Cuevas filed complaints with two US agencies alleging he was dismissed suddenly in March 2024 after raising concerns over manufacturing deviations in the forward pressure bulkhead, which is critical to managing pressure during flights, according to attorneys Katz Banks Kumin. Cuevas worked as a contractor for Strom, who assigned him to Spirit AeroSystems, which builds fuselages for the Dreamliner. His attorneys filed complaints with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, saying in the latter submission that Mr Cuevas believes that "based on his direct observations of glaring safety issues, that Boeing's and Spirit's statements to the public and investors about the safety of 787 Dreamliners are fraudulent." The cause of the plane crash in Ahmedabad is still under investigation by Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Boeing, meanwhile, has said 'ready to support' Air India over 787 Dreamliner crash. The pilots gave a mayday call to the ATC soon after takeoff, however, there was no response after calls were made by the ATC. There is at least one survivor in the crash. Of the 242 people, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.

Augustana wins NSIC, punches ticket to NCAA Tournament
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Augustana) – Augustana softball opened up the NSIC Tournament championship game in commanding and dominating fashion while turning up the defense to claim the 12-1 victory over Winona State in five innings. The hot performance punches the Vikings' ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time in program history and secures its fifth NSIC tournament title—its third in the last four seasons. AU collected 12 runs off 10 hits in the five-inning affair, led by Desi Cuevas and Ashton Dorman's two hits apiece. Andrea Cain, Stella Harber, Liz Dierks and Dorman each collected two RBI while the team combined for five walks drawn. Grace Glanzer took the win in the circle after five innings of work. She totaled six strikeouts alongside six fly outs and three groundouts against 22 batters faced, allowing just one unearned run. Competition flamed at the start as the first three Warriors were downed in order in the top of the inning and the Vikings exploded offensively. All nine batters in Augustana's lineup saw the plate in the first inning and it all started with Cain drawing a four-pitch walk. A base hit from Cuevas and a fielder's choice loaded up the bases and was followed by back-to-back-to-back singles from Dorman, Ella Cooper and Harber. Those three base hits brought in a combined five runners for Augustana, who took a commanding 5-0 lead with no outs yet in the inning and forced a Winona State pitching change. Norah Christiansen worked a walk off a 10-pitch at-bat and Sidney Smart drew a walk of her own to load the bases once again. Dierks singled to first base to score Harber and Christiansen would come in off a fielder's choice to firmly put the Vikings ahead 7-0 at the end of the inning. The Warriors put runners on first and second following a Viking error, soon scoring one run, but the effort would end there. AU struck again in the bottom of the third inning as Cuevas doubled to left center and came back around home off a base hit from Lexi Lander. Final nails in the coffin were placed in the bottom of the fourth by another hot inning from the Vikings. Cooper drew a walk and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt. A single down the left field line brought her home while a fielding error from WSU kept two runners on. Now ahead 9-0, a passed ball advanced those runners to second and third base, respectively. A fielder's choice scored another runner before Smart was caught stealing at home. Cain then stepped up to bat and continued her dominating weekend at the plate with a two-run homer over the left field fence. The rocket put the Vikings firmly ahead at 12-1 and the Warriors were quickly downed in the top half of the fifth inning to make it final and continue AU's postseason. After the tournament title was secured, Cain, Glanzer, Lander, Smart, Cooper and Cuevas were all honored on the 2025 NSIC All-Tournament Team.
