Double steal in tenth leads to Cubs walk-off of Pirates
June 15 - Ian Happ drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 win and take the series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Automatic runner Vidal Brujan and Kyle Tucker pulled off a double steal with Jon Berti at the plate, and then Happ knocked a single into right field off reliever David Bednar (1-5), scoring Brujan. Reliever Chris Flexen (4-0) was perfect in the top of the 10th for the win. Starting pitcher Colin Rea allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four in six innings for the Cubs, who won three of the four-game set. The Pirates have lost consecutive games for the first time since June 1-3. Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the first inning. Oneil Cruz led off with a single to right, went to second on a base hit from Nick Gonzales, and scored when Spencer Horwitz connected for a one-out single. Gonzales made it to third on Horwitz's hit and came around to make it 2-0 on Alexander Canario's ground-out. Chicago responded in the bottom half of the frame. Happ drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and went to third on Pete Crow-Armstrong's ground-out. He crossed the plate when Seiya Suzuki followed with another groundball out. Michael Busch knocked a fly ball down the left field line for a ground rule double and Dansby Swanson drove him in with a single to right field to tie it 2-2. After facing six batters each in the first, Rea and Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller settled down and were efficient through the next five innings. Busch hit a two-out single in the third, the only hit for either side among a combined 27 batters until Horwitz singled to center in the sixth. Keller gave up two runs on three hits and fanned three in six innings. Horwitz had two of Pittsburgh's four hits. June 1 - After Kansas City's Michael Wacha and Detroit's Tarik Skubal were locked in a classic pitchers' duel for seven innings, the host Royals managed to break through via Vinnie Pasquantino's RBI single in the eighth for a 1-0 win on Saturday. The 33-year-old Wacha retired the first 10 batters he faced and didn't yield his only hit until Colt Keith singled into center field with one out in the seventh inning. The veteran right-hander fanned six with one walk while facing 23 batters over 99 pitches before leaving after seven. John Schreiber (2-2) struck out two and allowed a walk in the eighth to earn the decision. Coming off a two-hit shutout for his first complete game last weekend against Cleveland, Skubal allowed only singles to Freddy Fermin and Nick Loftin, while fanning seven without a walk on 90 pitches in the seven innings he lasted. Pete Crow-Armstrong homered and drove in a career-high six runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 13-3 on Friday in the first meeting of the season between the crosstown rivals. Seiya Suzuki had two hits and two RBIs for the NL Central-leading Cubs on a warm and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Nico Hoerner scored three times, and Cade Horton (2-0) pitched five innings of three-run ball in his first career start. Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki homered in the fifth inning to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Monday night. Miguel Amaya went 3 for 3 for Chicago, and Kyle Tucker hit an RBI triple. The NL Central leaders had dropped four of five. Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (3-0) allowed two runs and six hits in a season-high 6 2/3 innings. Rea was replaced by Daniel Palencia after Derek Hill hit a two-run homer for Miami. Palencia got four outs before Drew Pomeranz handled the ninth for his first save since 2020. Last-place Miami lost for the 12th time in 15 games.
