The Best New Blu-ray and 4K Releases in June 2025
Physical media culture is alive and thriving thanks to the home video tastemakers hailing everywhere from The Criterion Collection to Kino Lorber and the Warner Archive Collection. Each month, IndieWire highlights the best recent and upcoming Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K releases for cinephiles to own now — and to bring ballast and permanence to your moviegoing at a time when streaming windows on classic movies close just as soon as they open. The summer movie season is upon us, with 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' smashing records and luring audiences back to theaters for blockbuster spectacle and family-friendly fare. As the weather improves, you may not feel like going out to a movie or staying at home to watch one, and after a dreary East Coast winter and spring, you wouldn't be faulted for preferring to get out and smell the roses rather than stare at a screen. But with this June's top new Blu-ray and 4K releases, hopefully, you're doing more than staring at a screen: You're hopefully being absorbed into a cinematic world that asks more of you than passive viewing. Sidney Lumet's Black-centered musical 'Wizard of Oz' reimagining 'The Wiz,' Paul Schrader's kaleidoscopic literary biopic 'Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters' (IndieWire's #2 best film of the 1980s), and William Friedkin's epic 'The Wages of Fear' remake 'Sorcerer' are among the new Criterion Collection titles hitting shelves this month. Bab El Hadid Becomes the First Egyptian Film in The Criterion Collection, A Historic Milestone for Egyptian Cinema
The Criterion Collection has officially selected Bab El Hadid as the first Egyptian film to enter its prestigious global archive. But this isn't just a restored edition—it's a cinematic rebirth. The film is presented in a meticulously remastered 4K version, complete with a brand-new poster designed by artist Mariam El Reweny and original uncompressed audio, giving the classic a stunning new life more than 60 years after its debut. The White Lotus Star Sam Nivola Has His Say On 'Nepo Baby' Comments
Fabio Lovino/HBO The White Lotus star Sam Nivola has addressed critics who've called him a 'nepo baby' due to his family's ties to the entertainment industry. Earlier this year, Sam caused a major stir in the third season of The White Lotus, in which he played the youngest member of the Ratliff family, Lochlan. As part of Variety's Actors On Actors interview series, the actor recently sat down with Monsters star Cooper Koch, in which he admitted that he's 'constantly' being asked about nepotism in interviews because his mum and dad are also actors, Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola. 'My whole thing was that my parents really didn't want me to be an actor, which I totally get – I don't know if I'd want my kid to be an actor. It's a really mentally tough career to be in,' he explained. 'And even if I had no success, I would want to be doing it. But they really didn't want me to do it.' Sam went on to say that, initially, he wasn't interested in acting himself, until watching films in the Criterion Collection made him fall 'in love with cinema', and in turn, made him want to be an actor. Back in March, Sam's on-screen brother Patrick Schwarzenegger – who has also had to contend with accusations of nepotism due to the fact his parents are action star (and former governor of California) Arnold Schwarzenegger and journalist Maria Shriver – revealed that his co-star confided in him that he was worried about being hit with questions about his family in interviews. 'I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know who Sam was or who his family was until like six months into [filming],' Patrick admitted. 'He was, like, 'Oh, I hope they don't call me a nepo baby'. And I was, like, 'Why?'.'

Criterion Announces New Box Set of Wes Anderson's First 10 Features
Wes Anderson is being feted by the Criterion Collection ahead of the release of his latest film, 'The Phoenician Scheme.' Known as an auteur whose name has become synonymous with a distinct aesthetic, Anderson has directed 12 films, plus the series of shorts 'The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar and Three More,' across his career. Now, his first 10 features (which encompass 25 years of cinematic history) are being released in 4K UHD and Blu-ray by the Criterion Collection. Anderson himself approved the 20-disc collection which also has special edition features ranging from essays by Martin Scorsese, Richard Brody, James L. Brooks, Bilge Ebiri, Moeko Fujii, Kent Jones, Dave Kehr, Geoffrey O'Brien, and Erica Wagner, as well as more than 25 hours of bonus content including audio commentaries, interviews, documentaries, deleted scenes, auditions, short films, home movies, commercials, storyboards, animation tests, archival recordings, still photography, discussions, analysis, and visual essays. The 4K transfer was supervised by Anderson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. The 4K UHD discs of the films are presented in Dolby Vision HDR. The collection will be released September 30. 'Wes Anderson's first 10 films represent 25 years of irrepressible creativity, an ongoing ode to outsiders and quixotic dreamers, and a world unto themselves, graced with a mischievous wit and a current of existential melancholy that flows through every captivating frame,' a statement from Criterion reads. Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme' opens in theaters on Friday, May 30.
