Gagged, threatened with sickle, Faridabad elderly couple robbed of valuables

In a case of daylight robbery, two armed men allegedly broke into the house of an elderly couple at Sector 15-A in Faridabad city, tied them up, and made off with ₹1.85 lakh cash, gold and diamond jewellery, and a car on Thursday. According to the police, the crime occurred in the afternoon when Raghunandan Gandhi, 80, and his wife Vijaya Gandhi, 75, were alone at the residence of their elder son Ashish, a London-based doctor. 'The robbers rang the doorbell asking for water and when Raghunandan went inside to fetch it, the duo jumped over the gate, entered the house, and overpowered the couple. They tied the couple's hands, legs, and mouth, and threatened them with a sickle, demanding money and jewellery,' said a police officer. When the couple said that they did not keep cash in the house and all the jewellery was in a bank locker, the robbers searched the premises and took approximately ₹1.85 lakh in cash, two gold bangles, a diamond pendant, four pairs of diamond studs, and a guild ring, stated the First Information Report based on the complaint filed by the couple's younger son Amit Gandhi, 34, of DLF Sector 10. Before fleeing, the robbers allegedly stole the family's Santro car, the police said. Amit told the police that he received a call from a neighbour around 2.27 pm informing him about the robbery and that his parents were in trouble. The police at the Central Police Station have registered a case under Sections 309(6), 333, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Crime Branch has been roped in to assist in the investigation, a police spokesperson said. Amit said his parents have been injured and are still in trauma. 'They are having trouble speaking up,' he added.

Wanted for 13 cases and on run for 2 yrs, ‘mastermind' of Goa land-grab scam arrested

The Goa Police on Friday arrested Mohammal Suhail, alleged to be the mastermind in a multi-crore land-grabbing scam in the coastal state. Police said in a statement that Mohammad Suhail (48), alias Michael, who had been absconding, was arrested at around 4.30 pm near a petrol pump in South Goa's Quepem by a Crime Branch team. Suhail, a resident of Pilar in Goa, is originally from Karnataka. Police said he is a 'habitual offender' and was previously arrested for his alleged involvement in at least 13 cases related to land-grabbing. 'He was absconding for the past two years,' an officer said. The Goa government formed an SIT on June 15, 2022, to investigate cases of illegal land transfer and land-grabbing. The SIT probed 44 FIRs involving more than 100 properties — nearly 1.5 lakh sqm of land — and made 56 arrests, including some officials from the Archives Department. The state government had appointed a commission of inquiry, headed by former Bombay HC judge Justice V K Jadhav (retd), on September 9, 2022, to probe the land-grabbing cases. The commission in its report detailed how government records had been tampered with in a 'systematic and organised' manner, and forged sale deeds with Portuguese-era calligraphy were inserted into the records, allegedly 'in connivance with the staff of the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology'. In several cases, the accused hatched a conspiracy and forged land records and documents in their own names or of their associates, often in collusion with officials in the state's archives department, and fraudulently executed sale deeds to third parties after illegally acquiring properties.

CBI takes over probe into Wayanad tribal youth's death in police custody

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the alleged custodial death of Gokul, an 18-year-old tribal youth, at Kalpetta police station in Wayanad district, which had earlier been investigated by the Crime Branch. A special team from the CBI's Thiruvananthapuram unit will investigate the case based on a notification published by the State government in the Kerala Gazette on June 6 that gave consent to transfer the case under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act. Expressing disappointment over the local police investigation, Omana, Gokul's mother, had moved the Kerala High Court with a request to hand over the case to the CBI as the suspects were all police officers. She had accused the police of grave human rights violations while keeping him in custody without any evidence of his involvement in any cognizable offence. It was on April 1 that Gokul was found dead in the washroom of the Kalpetta police station, a day after he was taken into custody in connection with the missing of a minor tribal girl. Two police officers, including an Assistant Sub-inspector, were placed under suspension following an internal investigation. There were also a series of protests on the part of tribal families and human rights organisations for considering the incident just as a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Seeking a CBI probe, they had appealed to the State government to have a serious look at the investigation report submitted to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Zone) that had found several grave lapses on the part of police officers in ensuring Gokul's safe custody. The Kerala State Human Rights Commission had also registered a case and sought a separate report from the District Police Chief (Wayanad). It was on March 31 that the 18-year-old from Nellarachal near Wayanad district's Ambalavayal was taken into custody from Kozhikode along with the missing tribal girl. The two were reportedly fleeing their village in Wayanad following some inter-tribe issues over their relationship and the decision to get married. Though the police sent the girl to a government shelter home, the youth was kept in police custody. He was found dead the following day. However, the police officers at the Kalpetta station had denied allegations of custodial torture and claimed that the post-mortem examination had found no trace of injuries on his body to prove the same. Citing the case as a suicide, they had also tried to uncover some of the previous 'self-killing attempts' by the youth on various issues.
