Homecoming For Karun Nair, Jitesh Sharma To Leave Vidarbha For Baroda: Report

Last Updated: Karun Nair is all set to return to Karnataka after eight years, leaving Vidarbha, as the domestic transfer season begins. Star India batter Karun Nair, who is all set to make a return to the Test fold after eight years, is on the verge of leaving Vidarbha to move back to Karnataka, as the domestic transfer season begins with just over two months to go for the 2025-26 season to start, according to a report in Cricbuzz. Not just Nair, but Vidarbha is also set to lose the services of IPL 2025 winner Jitesh Sharma, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's star wicketkeeper-batter, as he too is contemplating a move to Baroda. Vidarbha were the champions in the Ranji Trophy, runners-up in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and quarterfinalists in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2024-25 season. Vidarbha's domestic success last year was built on strong batting contributions from Nair and Jitesh, with the former playing a crucial role. Nair scored 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy, the fourth-highest in the event and topped the charts in the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament with 779 runs. Nair had left Karnataka ahead of the 2023-24 season, but according to the report, he will return to the state for personal and family reasons. KSCA sources confirmed to Cricbuzz that Nair's return is a strong possibility. The star Indian batter led Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare last year. Sources within BCA have confirmed to Cricbuzz that the transfer of Jitesh from Vidarbha to Baroda should be completed within a day or two. Jitesh led Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and played under Nair in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but couldn't make much of an impact. Jitesh enjoyed a successful Indian Premier League season with RCB and delivered some match-winning innings, including a 10-ball 24 in the final. Baroda Cricket Association officials have said that Jitesh will play in both red-ball and white-ball formats for the state side. Last year, Karnataka won the Vijay Hazare defeating Nair's Vidarbha, but couldn't make the knockouts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali. In the Ranji Trophy, Karnataka couldn't reach the knockouts. Nair's inclusion in the red-ball team might just provide Karnataka with the much-needed push in the Ranji Trophy. First Published: June 19, 2025, 23:18 IST

Don't worry about outside noise: Sachin Tendulkar tells India captain Shubman Gill

Sachin Tendulkar told Shubman Gill to take bold calls and not be affected by the outside noise ahead of his first match as the Indian captain. Gill will become India's 37th Test captain as he takes over from Rohit Sharma, who retired ahead of the England tour. The 25-year-old is also the fifth-youngest Indian Test captain in history. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Tendulkar said that Gill should be brave enough to make big calls and not worry about what others say as long as the decisions are being taken in the best interest of the team. The Indian legend said that people will have a lot of opinions about his captaincy and he shouldn't worry about them and should back the calls he is making. advertisement"My advice to him would be to take those bold decisions and not to worry about the outside world so long as the decision is taken in the interest of the team," said Tendulkar. "Because people will have opinions, and people will say that he is being too attacking or too defensive, or this is not happening, that is not happening. He should do what is in the interest of the team and whatever is discussed in the dressing room."So that is what matters above anything else, and that is what my advice to him would be - not to worry about the outside world. The dressing room, and whatever decisions he is taking in the interest of the team, are important - and to back that."'No point in comparing my stint and Gill's'advertisementTendulkar himself was made the Indian captain at the age of 23 years and 169 days in 1996, but the Indian legend refused to draw parallels between him and Gill. Tendulkar said that both were completely different eras and the important thing is to address what is happening in Indian cricket at the moment. "(They are) different eras altogether, so no point comparing that era to what happened in Indian cricket then and what is happening now. We need to address what is happening now and do it," said Tendulkar. India and England will lock horns at Headingley from Friday, June 20. Must Watch

Rishabh Pant accuses fielding coach T Dilip of favouritism; lots of sledging during India's practice session: Report

The Indian cricket team, which arrived in Headingley on Tuesday, got down to business as the players and coaching staff participated in the team's first proper practice session in Headingley ahead of the series opener against England on Friday. The team comes to Headingley on the back of two warm-up matches against England Lions and one intra-squad game, but irrespective of whatever fine-tuning at Canterbury and Beckenham, Leeds is where the players will be tested the most. Two practice sessions, one done and dusted with, and then onto the big one. There's something about this team. Yes, three of Indian cricket's biggest superstars are missing, but the 18 players picked to do the job appear a lot more relaxed and entertained than usual. Perhaps it's the lack of baggage. Most of these players are young and low on experience – nothing better than a fresh start – which reflected as the players hit the ground running on Wednesday. Cricbuzz reported that India's practice session initially resembled a match of gully cricket as the players engaged in some heavy sledging and banters. The session began with fielding coach T Dilip's direct hit challenge. For this, the players were grouped into three different teams. Dilip is one to always begin the proceedings with some light-hearted drills, which was evident in the players' demeanour. In fact, Rishabh Pant even accused Dilip of favouritism, saying 'Arre who toh lefty hai, usko left mein hi khada karoge'. But all in good spirits. A fun fight about the final scores capped off the drill. But it wasn't before some takeaways. Prasidh Krishna, Karun Nair and Kuldeep Yadav all nailed a couple of direct hits each. Also Read: Shubman Gill to bat at No. 4 in Headingley Test, Rishabh Pant at 5; but where does that leave Karun Nair? However, once that direct hit competition was over, the fun was replaced by seriousness. The batters took guard in the nets while bowlers marked their run-ups. First up were openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, who took throwdowns before facing the fiery fast-bowling duo – and one that are likely to open the bowling for India, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Both India pacers looked in top gear. Bowling coach Morne Morkel has already informed just how quick, and in-rhythm Jasprit Bumrah has looked in during the intra-squad match, and today was just another extension of it. After Gill and Jaiswal were done with their hitouts, in walked Shubman Gill and Pant, India's No. 4 and 5 for the Headingley Test as confirmed by the vice-captain himself. Karun Nair had his chance too, but was in for a rough time when he copped a blow to his abdomen from Prasidh. The impact of the ball was such that the hit left a red mark just below Nair's ribs. Thankfully, it was just a passing pain, which Nair laughed off. Bumrah was once again a standout star during the nets. The Indian pace spearhead, who confirmed that he won't play all five Tests, proved once again exactly why he'll be missed dearly in the ones he skips. With the red Dukes ball in his hand, Bumrah emerged as a serious threat for his own teammates, making Jaiswal and Pant hope and jump. The one batter, however, who looked the most assured against Bumrah was India captain Gill, using his defence to negate the movements of the ball. His approach stood out because the rest of the batters, Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul, found it difficult to cope against Bumrah's barrage of unplayable deliveries. Outside of the players, England head coach Brendon McCullum and Morkel shared a warm embrace.

Gautam Gambhir leaves for England to rejoin Team India ahead of 1st Test

Just days after rushing home to New Delhi due to a family emergency, Gautam Gambhir has reportedly flown back to England, where India will kickstart their World Test Championship campaign on June 20 with a five-Test series. The 42-year-old had to leave the team camp in Beckenham after his mother, Seema, suffered a cardiac arrest on June 11. While she remained under observation in the ICU on June 16, doctors have reportedly declared her out of danger. With her condition stabilising, Gambhir decided to return to England on Tuesday (June 17) to rejoin the Indian squad, who are currently preparing for the opening Test at Headingley. According to Cricbuzz, Gambhir left for London on Tuesday. The series marks a new chapter in Indian Test cricket, with Shubman Gill leading a side that is missing some of the most iconic names in the country's red-ball history. The retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, alongside the absence of pace spearhead Mohammed Shami due to injury, have triggered a generational shift. In such a moment of transition, Gambhir's presence in the dressing room remains invaluable. Though he missed India's only tour game, a three-day intra-squad fixture in Beckenham overseen by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, and bowling coach Morne Morkel, Gambhir's presence in the dressing room ahead of the series opener will be vital. The former India opener has been at the helm of the transition in the red-ball format. The first Test of the newly instituted Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy begins June 20 at Headingley, followed by matches at Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval. India will aim to end an 18-year wait for a Test series win in England; Rahul Dravid, the Indian head coach before Gambhir, was the captain of the last side to win a red-ball series on English soil. In India's previous tour to England, a Virat Kohli-led team took a 2-1 lead after four matches in the series before the tour was cut short due to Covid-19 outbreak. The postponed match was eventually played a year later, where Ben Stokes-led English team defeated Team India, then led by Jasprit Bumrah, to equal the scoreline.

India vs England 2025: Good news for Team India as head coach...

Gautam Gambhir is set to link up with Team India in England on Tuesday. (Photo: IANS) Team India will begin their new cycle in the World Test Championships (WTC) 2025-27 with the five-match series against England. The Test series will get underway at Headingley in Leeds from Friday (June 20). The Indian side will be led by first-time skipper Shubman Gill, who is taking charge in the Test format from this series after the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last month. But the visitors suffered a big blow when their head coach Gautam Gambhir had to fly back to India abruptly in the middle of their preparation for the first Test. Gambhir has flown back to New Delhi after his mother, Seema Gambhir, suffered a heart attack and was admitted in ICU in a hospital in New Delhi. The former India opener missed Team India's intra-squad match played over the weekend in Beckenham, Kent. However, there is some good news for Shubman Gill's side on Monday as Gambhir is set to fly back to England on Monday night and should be joining up with the team in Leeds on Tuesday well ahead of their first Test. 'His mother is doing well now. Gautam will leave tomorrow and join the squad the same day,' a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. In Gambhir's absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel supervised the team's preparation ahead of the five-match series. They were joined by NCA head VVS Laxman, who had come to London on a personal trip from Switzerland. CAPTAIN SHUBMAN GILL. 🗣️🇮🇳 — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) June 15, 2025 According to Cricbuzz website, Laxman isn't in London on any 'official capacity'. 'He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne,' a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. 'The target is to win in England, and he may have spoken to the coaches and selectors present here, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game. But he holds no official role with this team,' the source told the website. Former India batter had gone to Lausanne to attend a meeting. 'He went to Switzerland and simply stopped by in London to spend time with the boys. It was always part of his plan,' the website quoted a BCCI source. Meanwhile, the Shubman Gill-led Indian Test squad are searching for their first Test series win in England since 2007.
