Ryan Coogler Says ‘Sinners' Was the Antidote to Directing Franchise Films: ‘I Wanted to Get Away from That'
Ryan Coogler has no interest in turning 'Sinners' into a franchise and is standing by it. The 'Black Panther' and 'Creed' director told Ebony Magazine that despite his original film being a box office hit, it's a one and done story. Coogler reunited with his frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan for the film, which puts Jordan in dual roles as twin gangsters Smoke and Stack. The film follows the brothers as they escape dueling factions in Chicago and return home to Mississippi to open a music hall, only to discover more blood-sucking foes left to battle. More from IndieWire 'John Candy: I Like Me' Documentary to Open 2025 Toronto International Film Festival Jon M. Chu Warned His 'Wicked: For Good' VFX Team That the Film Will Inevitably Be Memed 'I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing,' Coogler said. 'That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.' He continued, 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Coogler is confirmed to be developing an 'X-Files' reboot, saying during the 'Last Podcast on the Left' that the project has been in the works for a while. He also is returning to the MCU franchise world with 'Black Panther 3,' which will star Denzel Washington. 'I've been excited about ['X-Files'] for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it,' Coogler said. 'Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary. We're going to try to make something really great and really be something for the real 'X Files' fans, and maybe find some new ones.' Coogler previously thanked fellow filmmakers Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, and Brian De Palma for helping to inspire his leap of faith with 'Sinners.' He also credited audiences for purchasing tickets to go to the feature in theaters. Coogler wrote in a letter shared with IndieWire, 'I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry, but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can. We don't get to do what we do if you don't show up. To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form. And together maybe we can expand the definition of what a blockbuster is, what a horror movie is, and of what an IMAX audience looks like.' Watch: Sinners Featurette Showcase the Creation of the Smokestack Twins
Sinners had a phenomenal run in cinemas, and now the movie is available on digital for people to go see and watch. Just in, WB has dropped a new featurette on how Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan brought the Smokestack Twins to life. Check this out: There have been several twin movies before where an actor plays multiple characters together onscreen, and Sinners manages to bring that to the next level with some next-gen VFX that use machine learning to properly graft Jordan's face onto his body double. I'll admit, the process does seem pretty tedious, what with Jordan having to replay scenes twice as different characters; then having to act out the scene again with a mobile rig that will capture several angles of his face. So far, this is the fifth collaboration between Jordan and Coogler, and they've both proven that they both can bring the best out of each other with the success of films like Creed and Black Panther . Though Sinners did feel like it was a movie that brought together several things that had been done before when it was originally announced, Coogler has proven that he can bring a very unique flair to his projects and Jordan himself makes for a very good anchor as a lead. We don't know what the two will do next, but Coogler is expected to make a third Black Panther movie; and I wouldn't be surprised if Jordan found a way to be in that film as well. Catch Sinners now available on digital.

Creed's Massive Single Returns — And Becomes A Surprise Dance Win In The Process
The song 'One Last Breath' helped Creed rise to the next level decades ago, when it first became a worldwide hit. Many years later, the track remains one of the rock band's most familiar, and these days, it seems like it may have even outpaced every other entry in its discography as perhaps its most successful — or at least its longest-charting. The tune returns to multiple Billboard charts this week and also debuts on several other rankings that Creed is largely unfamiliar with in another form, thanks to an inventive reworking. 'One Last Breath' currently appears on a trio of Billboard charts in the United States, after living on just one of them a few days ago, as it has become both a top streamer and a bestseller once more. Creed's cut breaks back into the top 10 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, reentering at No. 9. At the same time, it lands in last place on the Alternative Streaming Songs chart, at No. 25, after not quite performing well enough just a few days ago to appear on Billboard's ranking of the most played alternative cuts on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The same Creed smash can also be found once again on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart. In that case, it doesn't need to return. Instead, it almost recaptures the throne, pushing from No. 6 to No. 2 and coming within striking distance of the top spot, where it has already spent some time. 'One Last Breath' may be surging in popularity again thanks to a remix — or perhaps it's a cover — that has become a hit on some Billboard lists that are largely foreign to Creed. The production act ATLiens debuts its remix of 'One Last Breath' on both the Dance Digital Song Sales and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts this week. The tune, which doesn't actually credit Creed at all, is essentially just a dancified reworking of the early rock win. The inventive tune opens in the runner-up space on the purchase-only tally, behind 'Abracadabra' by Lady Gaga, which surges back to No. 1. At the same time, it starts at No. 17 on the all-encompassing list of the most consumed dance and electronic tracks throughout the U.S.
