Trainer Gavin Bedggood and jockey Logan Bates pay tribute to Robbie Laing after Hughes wins last race at Sandown

Hughes displayed an electric turn of foot in the 1400m Open Handicap at Sandown, as trainer Gavin Bedggood and jockey Logan Bates both dedicated the win to their late former mentor Robbie Laing. Bedggood rode feature jumps winners for Laing, who died last Sunday, and worked under the Group 1 trainer, while the late Cranbourne horseman helped kickstart Bates' career with early winners. Hughes powered to victory on Saturday, his fourth from the past five starts and all with Bates in the saddle, to overhaul plucky Run Harry Run in the last couple of strides. 'There were a few nervous moments,' Bates said after the Sandown double. 'I just had to trust the horse and wait for the gaps to come and when I did ask him the ones in front of me got closer and closer and closer, he gave me an unbelievable feel when he did let rip. 'I think Robbie Laing was helping me there, the heavens opened up and we got through and he won as impressive as ever.' Bates piloted Until Valhalla to victory early on the card on a race day dominated by apprentice jockeys, who won five of the nine races. Lindsay Park claimed training honours with a treble. A double for Logan Bates ðŸ' @Logez27 @GavinBedggood â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 14, 2025 Bedggood remained in awe of Hughes' performance on Saturday and progression. 'Looking back at the corner I thought oh well, he's going to run on well and run a nice third or fourth but he grew wings late,' Bedggood said. 'He keeps raising the bar, I got him and thought we'd win a (Benchmark) 70 with him pretty quickly, he went and won a 70 at Caulfield and Cranbourne and I thought, it's going to get tough. 'Went to an 84 and won that, it was a good race today, a lot of proven gallopers … I know he had the 51kg but he's stepping up a lot today on what he has been beating and full credit to the horse.' Bedggood paid tribute to the 'legend' Laing. 'He pretty much taught me everything I know about training,' Bedggood said. 'I worked there for 13 years and he was very good to me. He was a legend.'

Cranbourne Racecourse to host the wake for the late Robbie Laing next Wednesday

Robbie Laing's family will hold a 'low-key' funeral but Jack Laing says his father's life will be celebrated in the trainer's own inimitable style at his Cranbourne stomping ground next week. Robbie Laing's death at the age of 66 last weekend stunned the Victorian racing industry as it came hours after the veteran horseman trained El Soleado into second placing in the final race of last Saturday's Flemington meeting. Jack Laing said he and some of his seven siblings were working through the process of transferring his father's racing and breeding stock. He said the industry and public's response to Robbie's death continued to amaze his family. 'The public response has been overwhelming,' Laing said. 'We knew it would be significant but even he would be surprised with how big it has been. It has just been massive.' Laing said his grandfather Eddie, who was also a successful trainer, suggested the family hold a small funeral for the gifted horseman. However, Laing said Cranbourne racecourse would be the scene of a huge celebration next Wednesday. ðŸ† Roman Arch - 2006 Australian Cup ðŸ† Polanski - 2013 Victoria Derby Robbie Laing’s final two Group 1 successes occurred at Flemington ðŸ‡ðŸ¼ He was a brilliant trainer & horseman & he will be missed by many in the racing industry 🕊ï¸ — (@Racing) June 8, 2025 • 'We're all devastated': Super stallion Snitzel dies 'As per Eddie's request, we're going to have a low-key funeral with just immediate family in Cranbourne,' Jack said. 'It's still going to be pretty big as Dad had a high offspring count with eight of us. 'We're going to have something low-key towards the end of this week. 'Then on Wednesday, all of his friends and compatriots in racing can say a few words, if they like, at a place where he trained hundreds of winners and won a Cranbourne Cup.' Laing said his stable would also have a fitting tribute to his late father at Sandown on the same day. The young trainer will run handy sprinter Speir in a 1000m race, which will be a fitting tribute as Robbie Laing bred the speedster and trained his sire Lord Of The Sky, who was one of the fastest horses in Australia during his racing career. Speir's rider will also don Robbie's black, red and white silks for the race. ðŸ† Roman Arch - 2006 Australian Cup ðŸ† Polanski - 2013 Victoria Derby Robbie Laing’s final two Group 1 successes occurred at Flemington ðŸ‡ðŸ¼ He was a brilliant trainer & horseman & he will be missed by many in the racing industry 🕊ï¸ — (@Racing) June 8, 2025 'If he's right, he'll just about win there and it would be awesome to have a winner while Dad has his wake,' Laing said. 'It will be the perfect send-off if a horse he bred wins.'

Seven-year-old galloper having just his 15th start at Sandown on Saturday

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Talbragar isn't getting any younger but trainer Julius Sandhu suggests the best may still be yet to come with the talented galloper. A late start to his career means despite being an eight-year-old in just a few months, Talbragar has only been to the races on 14 occasions. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Returning last month in a hot form race at Caulfield, Talbragar will now tackle Saturday's Benchmark 84 (1000m) at Sandown Hillside where Sandhu hopes he can improve on an impressive second-up record. 'I was happy with his first-up run and thought he might have finished a bit closer with some luck,' Sandhu said. 'He got a little bit tight for room coming around the bend and there are a few other little bits and pieces that didn't quite go his way. 'He's only had a few second-up runs in his career but has won two of them so let's hope he can make it three on Saturday.' • Comeback star can give Cummings a Golden send-off The Cranbourne-based conditioner initially wanted to tackle last Saturday's meeting at Flemington with Talbragar but a minor issue on race morning forced him to scratch. 'He came through that run in good order and was meant to go to the races to run last Saturday at Flemington but he had a minor hiccup on race morning,' Sandhu said. 'It meant we had to scratch him but it was nothing serious but we just needed to do what we needed to do.' Trainer Julius Sandhu will send Talbragar to Sandown Hillside on Saturday. Picture: Getty Images Sandhu also suggested punters read little into Talbragar's one-run spring campaign when he failed to fire in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at The Valley. 'I just thought he came into the spring a little bit ordinary and I wasn't happy with the way he pulled up,' Sandhu said. 'There was no injury or anything, I just wasn't happy completely with the way he came through the run so I just looked after him, gave him a break and brought him back.' Sandhu is the fourth trainer for Talbragar but he knows the horse as good as anyone having trained his younger brother, Lofty Strike. Lofty Strike nearly took Sandhu to Group 1 heights on multiple occasions and while it's very unlikely Talbragar will do that, he arguably boasts the title of best-bred gelding racing on Saturday, being by super sire Snitzel and out of 2013 Golden Slipper winner Overreach.
