Drunk SNA smashed car into traffic lights in Dublin and knocked them over
Ines Perez (43), of Willowpark Avenue, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to drink-driving on October 7, 2023. A special needs assistant who crashed when she was nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit, causing traffic lights in a south Dublin suburb to topple over, has been disqualified from driving for two years. Ines Perez (43), of Willowpark Avenue, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to drink-driving on October 7, 2023. The court heard that Perez was driving a Volkswagen Polo along Scholarstown Road in Knocklyon shortly after 2am when she crashed into a light pole, causing nearby traffic lights to topple and block the road. The court heard that Garda Mark Faul, who was in the area, spoke to Perez, who had been driving the car. He noted signs of intoxication, after which Perez failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. Stock image: Getty Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 14 2025 A subsequent blood sample taken at a garda station showed a concentration of 144 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood - nearly three times the legal limit of 50mg. Garda Faul told the court that Perez had no previous convictions and was fully cooperative with the investigation. Her defence counsel, Ciara Ní Ghabhann BL, told the court that Perez is a mother of two children and had been going through an emotionally difficult breakup at the time. The court heard she rarely drank and was 'deeply embarrassed and anxious' to be before the court. The court heard Perez works as an SNA on a substitute basis and relies on her car to travel to different schools at short notice. Ms Ní Ghabhann asked the court to consider deferring the disqualification due to the possibility of a permanent role becoming available in September. Judge John O'Leary convicted Perez and imposed a €250 fine with six months to pay. He also disqualified her from driving for two years, with the ban deferred to begin on October 1, to allow her time to secure a permanent position. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.

Hotel manager ran red light and crashed into parked car after drinking bottle of wine
Jennifer Ryan of Butterfield, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to drink-driving at Butterfield Park on February 10, 2024. A 55-year-old hotel manager who was observed running a red light and colliding with a parked car after drinking a bottle of wine has been banned from driving for three years and ordered to complete a restorative justice programme. Jennifer Ryan of Butterfield, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to drink-driving at Butterfield Park on February 10, 2024. Garda Ciarán Kelly told the court that at around 8.45pm, his attention was drawn to a car stopped at the top of a queue of traffic lights on Butterfield Avenue. The vehicle had reversed slightly towards the car behind. Stock image: Getty Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 14 2025 When gardaí pulled alongside, he said the driver slowly proceeded through a red light and did not stop when directed. The court heard the driver turned onto Butterfield Park and collided with a parked car, causing damage to both vehicles. Garda Kelly approached the driver's side and instructed the woman to turn off the engine. He noted a strong smell of alcohol and slurred speech from the driver. The court heard that a urine sample later returned a reading of 347 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine, well over the legal limit. The court heard that Ryan had no previous convictions. Her defence counsel, Lauren Flanagan BL, said that Ryan was 'desperately sorry' and had been under significant emotional strain at the time. She told the court that her client had consumed a full bottle of wine in one sitting and had since voluntarily given up driving, prompting Judge John O'Leary to ask: 'Would it not be easier for her to give up alcohol than driving?' Ms Flanagan said her client accepted she had an issue with alcohol and was actively engaging with support services. She said Ryan is currently receiving treatment through St John of God's addiction programme. Judge O'Leary convicted the defendant, imposed a €400 fine with six months to pay and disqualified her from driving for three years. He also ordered that she complete a restorative justice programme under the supervision of the Probation Service, and adjourned the case to September 5 next for a progress review. If the fine is paid and the restorative justice programme is completed, the court indicated no further penalty will be imposed. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.

Woman stopped by gardai for drink driving became ‘upset' over Ukraine war
Iryna Maier handed police a full Ukrainian driving licence The case was heard at Drogheda court. A 43-year-old woman who left Ukraine because of the conflict has been fined €105 and disqualified from driving for three years for drink driving. Iryna Maier, The Saltings, Annagassan, Co. Louth, who has no previous convictions, denied the offence which occurred at Mountainstown, Dunleer, on December 17, 2024. The district court rejected a defence submission that the prosecuting Garda did not say a 'public place' when forming his opinion before arresting the accused. Gda Aidan Grier gave evidence that at 3.30pm he received notification from Garda Command and Control about a suspected female drink driver in the Dunleer area. Five minutes later he saw a grey Mercedes driving northbound in the village. It turned left onto Mountain Road. He followed and saw this car veering left and right. Gda Grier said he activated the blue lights. The other vehicle pulled in after 400m at an entrance to a field. Ms Maier handed him a full Ukrainian driving licence. She was quite emotional and upset. She was mentioning her home country and her children. The defendant was slurring her words and when she got out was unsteady on her feet. She failed a roadside breath test. The case was heard at Drogheda court. Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 14 2025 The witness continued that he arrested Ms Maier at 3.43pm on suspicion of drink driving. At Drogheda Garda Station she provided two samples of breath which produced an over the limit reading of 103mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. Barrister Eoghan Fagan, instructed by solicitor Ruairí Moore, submitted that the officer didn't indicate a public place in respect of forming his opinion and that the arrest and what followed was unlawful. Court presenter Sgt John O'Hehir said that the Garda clarified that the location was a public place. Judge Nicola Andrews said that she was satisfied that all took place in a public place. The defence did not go into evidence. Mr Fagan said that Ms Maier had travelled to Ireland on breakout of the conflict in Ukraine. If she returned her eldest son aged 17 would be eligible for military service. Her partner was in the military. Judge Andrews remarked it was an extremely stressful situation. Legal aid was granted and the court certified for counsel. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme
