CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast shows an unsettled Friday, but better weekend. Today's the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the over 17 hours of daylight. won't be feeling any summertime heat in the coming days. Temperatures should get to around average today with a high of 21 C this afternoon and then we'll drop into the mid 20s for highs Saturday/Sunday in Edmonton. Further south, heavy rain is expected in the coming days from Red Deer south with rainfall warnings in effect. 50-100 mm of rain is expected today and Saturday with the potential for more in the southwest corner of the province and there's a chance of accumulating snow at higher elevations for southern parts of the mountain parks. All of that heavier, steadier rain will stay well to the south of the Edmonton region this weekend. do have a good chance of some late-day showers and/or thunderstorms in the area today. ‘Educate yourself on your own blind spots': Physician on challenges faced by LGBTQ2S+ youth

Dr. Samra Zafar sits down with CTV Morning Live Edmonton's Cory Edel to talk about how to support mental health for LGBTQ2S+ people during Pride. Dr. Samra Zafar sits down with CTV Morning Live Edmonton's Cory Edel to talk about how to support mental health for LGBTQ2S+ people who may struggle during Pride. Pride is often celebrated as a time of joy and community, but for those who are isolated or unsupported, it can be a source of pain. Dr. Samra Zafar, who has worked extensively with the LGBTQ2S+ youth, parents and patients, joined CTV Morning Live Edmonton with advice. This transcript has been edited for length and clarity. Cory Edel: What advice do you have for someone who feels left out of Pride not by choice, but because of an unsafe home environment or personal trauma? Dr. Samra Zafar:. There are many, many people out there, especially young people that I work with, who are experiencing a lot of marginalization and ostracization. There are people who are fleeing their countries and coming to Canada as refugees because of torture they faced due to their sexual orientation or their gender identity, and these are really serious issues. It could stir up a lot of feelings of historical experiences, of trauma, of family dynamics and it brings up this anger. It's really important to be compassionate to yourself and understand not everybody's experience is the same. We get into a comparison mindset oftentimes like, 'Everybody else is having fun and celebrating. Why am I feeling sad?' Personally for me, Mother's Day is very bittersweet because I don't have a great relationship with my mom and when I see everybody celebrating, it can stir up difficult feelings. It's important to be compassionate and validate your own personal experience, and acknowledge your emotions by either journaling or talking to a trusted friend or a therapist. Seek that help if you need it. Cory: Can you speak to how Pride events can support mental health and what makes those connections so powerful in reducing isolation and increasing resilience? Dr. Zafar: I think we focus a lot on celebration, which is amazing. It's also important to recognize that mental health challenges affect the LGBTQ2S+ communities in very, very disproportionate ways. They experience a lot more depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation. For instance, sexual minority Canadians are approximately 25 percent more likely to contemplate suicide. These are not just anecdotal things. This is driven by research and data. It's really important to have these conversations to de-stigmatize mental health, encourage community members to seek support and really pay attention to how other people are feeling and check in. Checking in is not just saying, 'Hey, how are you doing? Are you enjoying the celebration?' Checking in means sitting down with them and saying, 'How are you doing? I really want to know.' Asking them how they want to be supported. Cory: What's one thing allies can do this month to actually make a difference? Dr. Zafar: Allyship is a journey. It's not a destination. It's not like you get up one day and say, 'I'm going to be an ally to this group,' and you get on your soapbox and you start speaking on behalf of someone. Allyship is about amplifying their voices. Allyship is about educating ourselves like, 'What is the right way I can show up?' It's not about solving and fixing things. It's about showing up in solidarity. It's about being there for somebody. One thing you can do is first educate yourself. What are some of your blind spots? What are some of your unconscious biases? I am a mother to two queer daughters. I grew up with intense homophobia and patriarchy in my environment and in my childhood. If I can be on that journey to be a parent that my daughters deserve and should have, then anyone can. That is my message to allies. You're going to make mistakes, you're going to do things and say things you're not proud of and make yourself cringe later on. But it's all about being compassionate to yourself, showing up repeatedly, and educating yourself. Be on that journey and when you know better, do better.

Edmonton weather: Thunderstorm risk late today, rainy Thursday

Edmonton will see a mix of weather on Wednesday, according to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast. A sunny and warm start across the Edmonton area and most of central and north-central Alberta. We were expecting some clouds and a few scattered showers through the region this morning, but that hasn't developed at all. However, that doesn't change much about the outlook for this afternoon and evening. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the foothills and in northwestern Alberta through the afternoon hours. There's the potential for SOME of these storms to turn severe with large hail being the main threat. The main risk zone for severe storms will be in southern Alberta, with the potential for some supercell thunderstorms and a slight risk of a tornado. Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologists are also eyeballing northwestern Alberta for the potential for some funnel clouds this afternoon (very low chance, but a non-zero possibility of a landspout tornado). be another day to keep an eye and ear on the severe weather advisories across parts of Alberta. The severe storms Tuesday night all stayed well to the south and southwest of Edmonton, but we'll see how today plays out. An area of low pressure will form in southern Alberta later today and then slowly drift eastward. Along the trough of low pressure stretch back to the northwest of that expecting some steadier rain around Edmonton and northwest toward Whitecourt plus areas east toward Lloydminster. If the system sets up as expected, we're in for a morning of steady (heavy, at times) rain in and around Edmonton. The rain should taper off in the afternoon with some clearing late in the day Thursday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Partly cloudy. 60% chance of a late-day shower or thunderstorm. High: 22 Tonight - 60% chance of a shower or thunderstorm early evening. A few clouds overnight. 9pm: 16 Thursday - Morning rain (possibly heavy), tapering off in the afternoon with some late-day clearing. Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 17 Friday - Partly cloudy. Slight risk of a late-day shower. Morning Low: 9 Afternoon High: 20 Saturday - Mix of sun & cloud. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 17 Sunday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 6 Afternoon High: 18 Monday - Partly cloudy Morning Low: 8 Afternoon High: 19

Edmonton weather: Warm and smoky today, with showers coming tomorrow

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, it'll be very smoky today but less so tomorrow. An air quality warning went into effect for the Edmonton region Tuesday evening and it will likely remain in place throughout today. We're expecting some improvement in air quality as the day goes on. But, we'll probably stay in the high risk range for much of the day, possibly dropping to a moderate risk later this afternoon and evening. The Environment and Climate Change Canada air quality is reading 10+ (very high risk) this morning, however the Alberta AQHI is reading 6-9 across the Edmonton region. Bottom line: There will be wildfire smoke in the area throughout the day, to varying degrees and with an expected improvement as the day goes on. Tomorrow's smoke forecast is a little more uncertain due to the chance of rain. We have a system moving into southwest Alberta tonight with some showers and a risk of thunderstorms for that area. The precipitation will drive north into the Edmonton region by Thursday morning and although there's some uncertainty with how much precipitation we'll actually get in the city, expect showers and possibly some periods of rain in the area through the day Thursday. More showers are likely for Friday, with a risk of some thunderstorms developing in the evening. Temperatures will climb into the low 20s again today. However, we'll see daytime highs slip into the mid to upper teens for Thursday-Saturday in the city. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mix of sun & cloud & Smoky/Hazy. High: 22 Tonight - Increasing cloud overnight. Hazy. 9pm: 18 Thursday - Cloudy with showers. Occasional periods of steadier rain. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 18 Friday - Cloudy. 60% chance of showers. Risk of a thunderstorm in the evening. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 19 Saturday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 19 Sunday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of showers (especially later in the day). Morning Low: 10 Afternoon High: 20 Monday - Mix of sun & cloud. Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 22
