Toyota Corolla Review 2025

Oh, it's only the best-selling badge in the whole car industry, having recorded more than 50 million sales across 12 generations since its launch in 1966. The more astute among you will note it has only recently rejoined the fold in the UK, replacing the Auris having itself departed in 2006. After two generations out it would appear Corolla is more trusted, and the badge returned in 2018. Attached to arguably the best-looking iteration of the car in its sixth decade of existence, too – though some of the iterations aren't putting up a strong challenge on that front. It was developed on a fancy brand new platform this time round – Toyota said during development that it prioritised good looks and decent handling, and the car was freshened up in 2023. At one glance, the former appears to have been nailed, more on the latter on the Driving tab. Advertisement - Page continues below That fancy platform is shared with the C-HR crossover, which is about as handy to drive as such crossovers get, but the Corolla has stiffer competition from other hatchbacks on the market. You feel the benefit of the lower centre of gravity, but the car's ambition is held somewhat in check by its eco-minded powertrain that rewards a gentler, smoother drive. What are the engines like? In keeping with the current climate, there are no diesels. These days your choice comes down to 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre hybrid options only. The 1.8 produces 138bhp for a 0–62mph time of 9.1 seconds, while the 2.0 gets there in 7.4 seconds thanks to its heady 193bhp output. The small battery isn't designed to get the car very far in EV mode, but is supposed to make the engine as efficient as possible, scavenging energy under braking and helping out where it can. Both engines offer fuel efficiency of around 60mpg and CO2 ratings around 100g/km depending on which spec you go for – the size of the alloys makes a bit of a difference to economy, it gets worse the larger you go. While the 1.8 is the more efficient on paper, the 2.0 goes about its business in a more relaxed fashion, which we prefer here. What else do I need to know? There are two body styles to choose from; the hatchback is 40mm longer than the old Auris, every millimetre contained in the wheelbase to make it roomier. You can also have an estate – clunkily named the Touring Sports – about which you can read by clicking these blue words. Our choice from the range TOYOTA 2.0 Hybrid 178 Icon 5dr CVT £32,150 See prices and specs What's the verdict? ' The Corolla looks more striking than ever, but in terms of tech, practicality and simple enjoyment, it falls short of its rivals ' The Corolla looks more striking than ever, and proves Toyota is really on a roll with making its cars less boring (by its own admission). The looks alone may tempt some people away from competitors like the Focus, Astra and Civic, as might its British-built status. What they'll find is a car that now exclusively offers hybrid powertrains and thus is angled away from keen drivers, no matter how sporty the trim. Instead, the Corolla is about as quiet and calming as hatchbacks get, so long as you don't work its coarse CVT transmission too hard. That – and its cost saving for business users – is the area it stands out from its many, many talented rivals. Because in terms of tech, practicality and simple enjoyment, it falls short of the best in class.

Toyota Accelerates Hybrid Shift with Corolla and RAV4

Toyota Motor Corporation is accelerating its phase-out of gas engine vehicles for its flagship models in Japan. Starting in May, all four models in the popular Corolla series will transition to hybrid vehicles (HVs) with the launch of updated versions. The RAV4, a sport utility vehicle (SUV), is set for a full redesign by 2025. It will also no longer be available with a gasoline engine. Toyota's new SUV, RAV4 HVs emit less carbon dioxide than gasoline-powered cars and don't face the range limitations of electric vehicles, fueling a strong rise in demand. Toyota's global HV sales increased by 31.1% in FY 2023 and by 21.4% in FY 2024. This marks two consecutive years of double-digit growth. The four Corolla models that have discontinued gasoline-powered engines are the sedan Corolla, the station wagon Touring, the hatchback Sport, and the SUV Cross. Now in its sixth generation, the new RAV4 is the first model to exclude a gasoline-powered option. It's offered as a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid vehicle. (Read this report in Japanese .) Riverside County sheriff's deputy crashes in Indio while chasing ‘suspicious' vehicle

A Riverside County Sheriff's deputy rear-ended a vehicle during a high speed chase Sunday night, sending two people and the deputy to local hospitals. At around 10:06 p.m., Sunday, deputies searching for a 'suspicious' vehicle in the 51000 block of Avenida Cortez in La Quinta found that vehicle at the intersection of Avenue 52 and Jefferson Street, three miles to the east, Lt. Deidre Vickers said in an email. Vickers said the vehicle failed to yield to deputies, who initiated a pursuit. During the pursuit, the sheriff's deputy rear-ended a white Toyota Corolla that was uninvolved in the chase, according to Indio Police Sgt. Abraham Plata. The driver and passenger of the Corolla were sent to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with non-life threatening injuries, Plata said. The deputy was sent to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio for minor injuries. Little other information was available. No arrests had been made as of Monday morning and the investigation remained ongoing. Toyota future models 2025-2035 (part 1)

Having the largest model array of any brand means that Toyota is also planning and spending on a grand scale. Its range of vehicles available in the Japanese, US, Chinese and European markets is vast. This first of two reports looks at highlights of the global line-up and what should replace them, along with certain potential additions. A tiny player in teeny cars, Toyota competes in Japan's Kei segment with the aged Pixis series plus the Copen GR Sport. Volume is so small that it would not be surprising if Daihatsu has no plans to supply new equivalents when it replaces the originals. Even smaller than the Japanese market minis is a future rival for the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks and Fiat Topolino. Previewed by the FT-Me at a special event in Toyota Motor Europe's HQ city of Brussels three months ago, the prototype was 2.5 m long. Production numbers would not be large. As for where it would be manufactured, TME is not saying (Stellantis builds its triplets in low-cost Morocco). A longer nose for the Aygo X: bigger engine coming One size up, namely the European A segment, could not be more of a contrast. The Aygo X is a big deal and plays a major part in keeping its maker the regional number two brand. The little hatchback is to be facelifted later this year, while the base 1.0-litre engine will be replaced by a hybrid powertrain. A successor should arrive in 2028 and again built at the Kolin factory in the Czech Republic. Big in Japan and again, Europe too, the Yaris and Yaris Cross are huge sellers. The first of these two was revealed in 2019 so the replacement will debut by 2026. Edgy styling has worked well for the hatchback and that will surely also feature next time around. The Cross should therefore gain a radical look when it is rebodied in 2027. Corolla & Camry: still big in the PRC and the USA Why the current E210 series Corolla has reached seven years of production is perplexing. Certainly the car sells incredibly well, especially in the USA though China and Europe are other major markets. TMC has gambled that it could extend the life of E210 and this has (so far) paid off but a new model cannot now be far away. Facelifted for the 2025 model year in April 2024, the Camry remains a big seller in North America. There is a lot of demand for sedans of this size in the USA, as Kia, for example, has been discovering. The K5 has gone from just over 9,000 sales during the first five months of 2024 to just shy of 29,000 in 2025 (quite the contrast to what's happening with its EV6 and EV9). Sedans of this size also do incredibly well in China; the Camry and Accord especially. Many were stunned by TMC's decision to break with the tradition of introducing a new model every five to six years, the XV80 series car being merely a restyle of XV70 which debuted in 2017. For this reason, a truly fresh Camry might appear as soon as 2026 or 2027, possibly bringing with it an EV option for the first time. Gazoo Racing: MR-2 and Celica returning? A revival of the Celica is also planned for next year or 2027, the car differing greatly from what Honda is planning for its Prelude reprise. Several generations of these models were once competitors. Whereas the latter is to be a hybrid, the Toyota should instead be powered by G20E. A high-output 2.0-litre turbo, this engine premiered at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. Motorsports being fundamental to the Gazoo Racing sub-brand, TMC may even return to world championship rallying with the Celica. Meanwhile, G20E should also feature in a new MR-2, the mid-engined sports car being expected to debut in 2028. Will there also be a new 86? Apparently yes, is the surprising answer. While the USA continues to be the present model's number one market, even there, only around 11,000 were sold in 2024. The timing of any follow-up is yet to be confirmed. Given how few of its own variant have been produced, it would be surprising if Subaru was again involved. Yet that raises the question of a production plant, not to mention engine, gearbox and platform. A new Supra: really? As with the Hachi Roku, it seems strange to think that a case could be made for another Supra but it seems that there will indeed be one. Akio Toyoda is especially keen to continue making GR-branded models, linking them to the company's racing activities. Even though Supra production is about to end, a 'V8 Supracar' will be entered in Australia's much-watched V8 Supercars series next year. A full-size model was revealed at the famous Bathurst race last October with a working prototype surely certain to be revealed at this year's event. But what will power it, and what will be the basis of the next production model? A possible future Supra might have a Lexus (or BMW) V8 rather than a BMW straight-six turbo. There are even whispers of TMC potentially tapping Mazda for both platform and engine. It is worth noting however, that no camouflaged cars have been seen testing in Japan or elsewhere. Half the size of BYD in China but still a big player Number four behind BYD, VW and Geely, Toyota remains a major force in China. With more than half a million locally manufactured passenger vehicles delivered year to date, the brand is way ahead of next placed Wuling. Unusually, four models all do a fairly similar amount of sales volume, these being the Camry, Corolla and RAV4, along with the Front Lander, a special vehicle for the PRC. Relatively weak in EVs, Toyota is nonetheless catching up fast: in only its second month on the market, deliveries of the new bZ3X exceeded 6,000 units. This low-priced electric 4.6 m long SUV is a JV with GAC, whereas its bZ3C crossover brother is part of a three-way alliance with FAW and BYD. The life cycles of both models should be six-seven years so a next generation bZ3X would be due in 2031/2032 after a facelift in 2028 or 2029. Will a big electric sedan do better than China's VW ID.7? Another EV in the bZ series is coming in 2026. Developed specifically for China by GAC-Toyota, the bZ7 will be a large sedan. A 5m+ long prototype debuted at Auto Shanghai in April. This model will be positioned above the bZ5, production of which has just commenced in Tianjin. The platform is eTNGA. A six-year lifecycle can be presumed so a facelift is due in mid-2028. FAW-Toyota developed the bZ5, premiering it at Auto Shanghai in April. The 4,780 mm long electric SUV evolved out of the bZ3C and bZ Sport Crossover concept prototypes. It features a 200 kW motor along with (BYD-owned) FinDreams 65 kW and 74 kWh Blade batteries. Sales are off to an especially strong start, helped greatly by pricing which commences below 130,000 yuan or circa 18,000 US dollars. Hydrogen fuel cells & Solid-state batteries TMC refuses to give up on hydrogen. The current Mirai has been greatly admired though for all the usual reasons with fuel cell vehicles, production ticks along fairly slowly. A replacement is coming in 2028, part of a venture with BMW AG. All-Solid-State-Batteries are also another fledgling technology which continues to be worked on quietly. TMC does not see itself selling tens of thousands of ASSB-equipped EVs annually until the 2030s. The company continues to work with Idemitsu Kosan, an oil refiner, in developing such cells packs, initially for the Japanese and Chinese markets. Auto sector in Pakistan posts strong growth in 11MFY25; car sales surge 35pc YoY

KARACHI: Pakistan's automobile sector demonstrated robust growth in the first eleven months of the fiscal year 2024-25, as car sales, motorbikes, and three-wheelers all posted significant gains, reflecting improved economic stability, better consumer confidence, and easing inflationary pressures. According to data compiled by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) total car sales in May 2025 reached 14,762 units, marking a 35 percent year-on-year increase and a 39 percent month-on-month growth over April 2025. The strong month-on-month recovery was largely attributed to a low sales base in April 2025, when road closures in Sindh due to strikes and operational challenges delayed deliveries, suppressing vehicle sales. As these issues eased, demand bounced back sharply in May, boosted further by a comparatively stable macroeconomic environment, lower financing costs, and improved consumer sentiment in anticipation of budget incentives. In terms of company-wise performance, Sazgar Engineering Works (SAZEW) posted the most remarkable increase, recording a 67 percent month-on-month rise and an 18 percent year-on-year growth. The impressive figures were driven by the April launch of a new facelift model of HAVAL, which gained strong market acceptance. SAZEW's total sales for 11MFY25 surged by 111 percent to 9,495 units, compared to 4,503 units in the same period last year. Indus Motor Company (INDU) also delivered a solid performance, with a 2.4 times year-on-year and a 48 percent month-on-month rise in sales to 4,829 units, marking its highest monthly sales in nearly three years. The growth was supported by increased demand for popular models like Corolla, Yaris, and Cross, whose combined sales reached a new 3-year high. Honda Atlas Cars (HCAR) reported a 69 percent year-on-year and a 17 percent month-on-month increase in sales to 2,005 units, while Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) saw a mixed result. PSMC posted a 38 percent month-on-month increase but remained down 8 percent compared to the same month last year, with May sales of 5,519 units. Hyundai Nishat Motors registered a healthy 58 percent year-on-year and 45 percent month-on-month rise to 1,307 units in May 2025. The two- and three-wheeler segment continued its impressive run, with total sales increasing by 26 percent year-on-year and 11 percent month-on-month to 150,175 units in May 2025; the highest monthly sales in three years. This brought cumulative 11MFY25 sales to 1.378 million units, up 30 percent year-on-year, as affordability and essential transport needs sustained demand in this segment. Pakistan's tractor industry, however, showed mixed trends. Total tractor sales in May 2025 stood at 2,184 units, representing a 29 percent year-on-year decline but a 36 percent month-on-month increase, as weak farm economics weighed on new purchase decisions. Within this segment, Millat Tractors sold 1,569 units in May 2025, down 34 percent compared to the previous year, while Al-Ghazi Tractors Limited (AGTL) sold 615 units, showing a 17 percent year-on-year decrease. Meanwhile, Pakistan's truck and bus segment recorded significant growth, with May 2025 sales rising by 147 percent year-on-year and 17 percent month-on-month to 610 units. Hino, Master, JAC, and Isuzu vehicles all posted increases, taking total 11MFY25 sales to 4,495 units, a 92 percent rise from 2,345 units in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year. Market analysts attributed this broad-based recovery in the auto sector to easing inflation, lower interest rates, and better financing options, coupled with a stable macroeconomic backdrop. The positive momentum was particularly noticeable in passenger cars and two- and three-wheeler categories, where pent-up demand from previous months converted into actual sales as operational disruptions eased. Looking ahead, Topline Securities expects the momentum to continue into the next fiscal year, driven by a combination of lower interest rates, improving vehicle financing options, and the introduction of new models equipped with updated engines, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Market watchers believe that as macroeconomic stability improves and consumer affordability rises, automobile sales volumes are likely to sustain their growth trajectory in FY26 as well. However, auto expert Mashood Khan has warned that the government's proposed downward trend in Additional Custom Duty, Regulatory Duty, and Custom Duty for easing the import of used vehicles will likely hit local manufacturing instead of increasing exports in the future. He foresees severe consequences for the local manufacturing industry. Without a thriving domestic industry, import bills will surge, and foreign reserves will take a hit, he added. The auto parts and other manufacturing sectors will face significant challenges. It's unclear how exports will increase without a robust local industry, he added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
