Sam Bird: Pulse excited for the big stage

By James Reid Sam Bird believes her London Pulse side are ready to embrace the big stage ahead of their major semi-final against Loughborough Lightning. Pulse finished top of the regular season table and come into Friday's clash at the Copper Box full of confidence off the back of four straight wins. Advertisement Their last defeat came at the hands of Lightning, who have proved Pulse's nemesis in recent seasons. Pulse's last three campaigns have ended at the hands of Lightning, including defeat in the 2023 Grand Final at the Copper Box. But Bird believes her young squad have matured immeasurably since then and are now relishing the big matches. 'They are so desperate to show what they can do,' said Bird. 'It has gone from being nervous on that big stage to thriving on it. There's no arrogance, there's no complacency but it's an excitement to be involved in these games now opposed to being a bit scared.' London Pulse are coming off the back of four straight wins. (Ben Lumley) Confidence is the watchword for Bird and her Pulse side, who have turned the tears of two years ago into an unwavering determination to achieve a maiden Netball Super League title. Advertisement Twelve wins from their 14 matches this season, including a 77-51 demolition of Lightning away from home in March, has certainly helped. 'It does feel like we have momentum, and the squad is still developing and improving, we are still looking at growth at this point,' added Bird. 'The fact we have won the Super Cup and then league is a good confidence boost, and confidence is really important. 'We know this game is going to be tight on Friday, nobody is going to roll over, but we have confidence to know we can win and that really important going into the game.' The season has not been without its hitches either; a seven-game unbeaten start to the season came to a shuddering halt at the hands of Nottingham Forest in early May before Lightning won at the Copper Box two weeks later. Advertisement The response, however, was exactly what Bird and her side needed in order to go again heading into the post-season. 'There was no finger-pointing, there was a lot of personal accountability both from the coaches and from players,' she revealed. 'We really recognised it was small things that contributed to those losses, and we were still the same strong roster.' Pulse's response on the court, four wins in a row to end the season, earned them top spot and a home major semi-final, meaning victory on Friday will send them straight through to the Grand Final at the O2 Arena. Bird is hoping home comforts can make all the difference, after reflecting that her squad may have been overwhelmed by changes to their routine ahead of last season's semi-final defeat to Lightning. London Pulse finished top of the regular season standings. (Ben Lumley) 'It is really important to us to have this game at home,' said Bird. 'There is nothing better than playing at your home venue, an iconic venue like the Copper Box. It feels like we have done everything we can to put ourselves in a good position. Advertisement 'Everybody is in their own bed, everyone is familiar with the venue. All our support staff are there; we have extra resource there to look after us. '[The major semi-final] is all new, so none of us as coaches have been through this process, so it is a new test for us. 'It feels less stressful to be in the major semi-final than a traditional semi-final, as that is knockout netball. It changes the mindset a little bit. We obviously want to win this game and then have a bit of recovery to peak for the final. That's the ideal route. 'It doesn't feel as edgy as when we played Loughborough last year in the semi-final, having beaten them twice in the league and then lost and it was all over. Advertisement 'I genuinely feel like we couldn't have tried any harder this year, but just trying hard doesn't guarantee you anything.' Recap of all the action at the Copper Box as headline event sees Dave Allen stop Johnny Fisher

Dave Allen took all the headlines on Saturday night thanks to his impressive fifth-round stoppage of Johnny Fisher, the veteran's experience proving too much for his younger opponent. Most of the evening's intrigue hinged on the main event, which saw two British heavyweights scrapping it out for the WBA intercontinental title . Allen, now 24-7-2 (19), avenged his controversial loss to Fisher, now 13-1 (11), in Riyadh at the end of 2024, leaving fans and pundits wondering what is next for the White Rhino – and his vanquished opponent. Catch all the latest boxing action on DAZN Whilst the Copper Box was primarily filled by punters interested in the main event, there was plenty of boxing action in east London. Here we have a round-up of all the action on the undercard, surmising seven fights. Fisher-Allen 2 preliminary fights see prospects improve their records The preliminary fights before the main card set the tone at the Copper Box. Emmanuel Buttigieg improved his unbeaten start to professional boxing with a third-round stoppage over Serbian Novak Radulovic, extending his record to 9-0 (3). The British middleweight knocked down his opponent in the second, before the referee intervened in the third. Fellow unbeaten prospect Taylor Bevan was in similarly good form, securing a second-round TKO over Juan Cruz Cacheiro. Super middleweight Bevan picked off his opponent in the first round, before unleashing a volley of unanswered punches that saw the referee step in. Commonwealth games silver medallist Bevan improves to 4-0 (4), with all four of his fights ending in the first two rounds. Shannon Ryan, now 9-1 (1), ended up on top of a bloody affair against Spaniard Fara El Bousairi. El Bousairi claimed that a huge cut on the right side of her face stemmed from an elbow of Ryan's; despite all the blood, the fight went the distance as Ryan ended up winner on points. The fourth fight of the evening also went the distance, with John Hedges, now 11-0 (3), earning the English cruiserweight title over Nathan Quarless, now 13-2 (0). One of four Essex fighters on the card, Hedges was in complete control as he earned a unanimous decision victory over the Liverpool man. Fisher-Allen 2 main card filled with knockouts Fellow Essex native Jimmy Sains, now 10-0 (9), earned the BBBofC southern area belt at middleweight in similar fashion, dominating his bout against Gideon Onyenani, now 7-5 (0), for a unanimous decision win in the first bout of the main card. Although defeated, Onyenani will take heart from being the first fighter to go the distance with Sains. The rest of the evening was filled with knockouts. Despite some good signs from challenger Gerome Warburton, now 15-2-2 (2), in the opening round, Commonwealth middleweight Kieron Conway, now 23-3-1 (7), quickly proved too much for the Welshman. A final blitz in the fourth round was enough for the contest to be stopped early, with Conway adding the British middleweight title to his Commonwealth strap. The chief support act also delivered, with George Liddard, now 12-0 (7), flying out the gates against Aaron Sutton, now 19-2 (3). Liddard had his Bristolian opponent down in the first and second rounds, but Sutton somehow survived the onslaught when it looked like he was overwhelmed. However, it proved to be Sutton only prolonging the inevitable, with another flurry from Liddard getting the stoppage in the fifth round. Fisher vs Allen 2 start time, undercard and how to watch fight tonight

Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen will each look to set things right this evening, as they square off in a heavyweight rematch, five months after their controversial first clash. In Saudi Arabia in December, on the undercard of Tyson Fury's rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, Fisher survived a shock knockdown by Allen to outpoint his old friend, although most observers felt Allen had been robbed of a rightful victory. The scorecards ultimately read 95-94, 93-96, 95-94 in Fisher's favour, as the 'Romford Bull' stayed unbeaten. Meanwhile, the 26-year-old's former sparring partner was left heartbroken, as he was denied the first title of his career – the WBA Intercontinental belt. Tonight, Fisher and Allen, 33, will meet on home soil in London, as Fisher aims to turn the Copper Box into the 'Copper Bosh' – as he and his father 'Big John' call it – once more, following his quickfire demolition of Alen Babic in the same venue last July. Will it be another brawl? Will Fisher erase doubts around the ceiling of his ability, or will Allen confirm the apparent superiority he showed in December? Here's all you need to know. When is the fight and what time will it start? Fisher vs Allen 2 will take place on Saturday 17 May at the Copper Box in London. The fight card is due to begin at 7pm BST (11am PT, 1pm CT, 2pm ET), with main-event ring walks expected from 10pm BST (2pm PT, 4pm CT, 5pm ET). How can I watch it?
