Trey Hendrickson predicted to lose contract standoff with Bengals

As written here consistently, barring a shocker, it has long felt like the Cincinnati Bengals will eventually emerge the "winners" of the contract standoff with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson. Those Bengals just happen to hold the vast majority of the leverage during this latest contract impasse with Hendrickson, despite the All-Pro's recent 20-plus minute airing of grievances at a team practice. Advertisement Despite this, Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated slots Hendrickson losing the standoff as one of his bold predictions for the season: "The alternative is to become Haason Reddick, which, for a player entering his age-31 season, cannot be appetizing. By taking the Bengals' reported current offer, Hendrickson can upgrade his salary by nearly $12 million and, while still being underpaid, improve upon his prospects for next offseason more by staying in Cincinnati than he could as a year-to-year mercenary for less on another roster." RELATED: Bengals UDFA is already turning heads at OTAs By now, Bengals fans know that isn't all that bold, though. This is merely the latest offseason dustup with Hendrickson over a contract. Past years have featured short one-year extensions and even reported threats of retirement. This offseason featured the Bengals actually granting him permission to seek a trade that never happened due to his age, production level, contract demands and trade asking price, to name a few factors. Advertisement Right now, Hendrickson is simply using every last bit of leverage he has left to make noise before the fines start to kick in during mandatory minicamp this month and training camp after that. He's extremely unlikely to actually miss games at his age with millions of dollars lost in fines while hurting his value with other teams. Hendrickson will likely wind up "losing' this affair in the form of a massive pay raise over the short-term, but just not for the exact number or years he and his reps seek. Texans' Among Teams Projected to Trade for New York Jets RB Breece Hall

Texans' Among Teams Projected to Trade for New York Jets RB Breece Hall originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite returning their top two rushers from last season - Joe Mixon and Daemon Pierce - the Houston Texans could possibly shake up the running backs room this summer. Advertisement In a recent article offering '100 Bold Predictions for the 2025 NFL Season', Sports Illustrated senior writer Conor Orr suggested the New York Jets would trade running back Breece Hall before the season opener. The Texans were among four teams projected to land Hall. "A handful of running back-needy teams—the Bengals, Chiefs, Texans and Cowboys—will get through camp and search to upgrade at the position, while the Jets will seek to pair Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis with a veteran still on the market who is looking to sign closer to the start of the regular season." Orr wrote. New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) runs with the ball© Kevin R. / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images A second-round pick by the Jets in 2022 out of Iowa State, Hall is entering the final year of his four-year, $9 Million rookie contract, and will be a free agent following the 2025 season. Advertisement Hall burst onto the scene during his rookie season in New York, averaging 5.8 yards per carry in 2023 before suffering a torn ACL. Since then, he's fallen short of 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons with the Jets. Last season, he paced the Jets with 876 rush yards and five touchdowns. Led by Mixon, six different running backs saw playing time for the Texans in 2024. Houston currently has eight running backs listed on the roster, including rookie Woody Marks, the team's fourth-round draft pick out of USC. Reportedly dealing with an ankle injury, Mixon was among a number of players on the non-participant list as the Texans began OTAs on Wednesday. With Mixon out, the thought was Pierce could get some reps in with the first team, but like Mixon, he was among the veterans not present for the voluntary workouts on Wednesday. Cowboys schedule: For first time since 2005, both games against the Giants are in the early window

The Dallas Cowboys, America's Team, have six primetime games on their 2025 schedule. That total ranks second among all NFL teams, just behind the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles win a Super Bowl, yet they are given just five primetime matchups (it just felt necessary to put that there). One matchup missing from all the optimal time slots for Dallas this year is against the New York Giants. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated was the first to highlight this point in his NFL schedule column. I'm taking a victory lap for my 2021 column on the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants no longer being premium television. Flex notwithstanding, this is the first time I can remember (research pending) this game not having even one premium time slot. Advertisement That sounded like an open invitation to do some digging. Even if Monday night, Thursday night, and Sunday night are considered the 'primetime slots,' any game that appears during the 4:25 pm ET window will have less competition for games or be on America's Game of the Week. Therefore, it should be considered a 'prime viewing' window for any matchup. With that criteria in mind, it will be the first time since 2005 that the Cowboys and Giants will not have a matchup in a prime viewing window (Week 18 is currently TBD). It's not like the NFL has tried to make this change slowly. They have decided to cut cold turkey. Last year, Dallas and New York played two Thursday night matchups, one being on Thanksgiving. The Cowboys 27-20 win over the Giants 'averaged 38.8 million viewers, the fourth most-watched Thanksgiving Day game on record and fifth most-watched NFL regular season game on record (records date back to 1988).' Even with drawing in record-setting numbers, let's be honest—it's been a painfully one-sided matchup for years, especially in recent history. Week 1 (2023) — Cowboys 40 Giants 0 Week 10 (2023) — Cowboys 49 Giants 17 Week 4 (2024) — Cowboys 20 Giants 15 Week 13 (2024) — Cowboys 27 Giants 20 *was 27-10 heading into the 4th quarter* Advertisement Dallas against New York has been a marquee matchup for the NFL, having them face off in Week 1 seven times since 2012, three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. However, the league had to pull the plug on prime scheduling for this game with New York fading into the distance among NFC teams. There's a chance that Week 18 could mean something if the game is put in the 4:25 pm ET window, but history will favor the fact that it probably won't happen.
