Corey Conners withdraws from 2025 Travelers Championship
For the second straight week, a top-25 player in the world has withdrawn from competition. Canada's Corey Conners was 3 under on the front nine Saturday at the 2025 U.S. Open and appeared to be making a move up the leaderboard before aggravating a wrist injury after playing a bunker shot from a plugged lie in one of Oakmont's ruthless sand traps. He shot 5-over 40 on the back and withdrew the next morning. Corey Conners of Canada gets treatment on the 12th tee during the third round of the 125th U.S. OPEN at Oakmont Country Club on June 14, 2025 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. That wrist is obviously still bothering him, because the PGA Tour sent notice early Tuesday that Conners has withdrawn from this week's 2025 Travelers Championship. Advertisement He will be replaced by Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas. Conners, a 33-year-old from Ontario, has quietly been one of the most consistently good players on Tour this season. He doesn't have a win, but five top 10s — including a tie for eighth at the Masters and a solo third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational — have him No. 10 in the FedEx Cup standings. He's also the highest-ranked Canadian player in the world at No. 24. The 2025 Travelers Championship — the PGA Tour's final signature event of the season — begins Thursday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. US Open golf: Live updates of the final round at Oakmont Country Club
Follow the action from the final round of the US Open. Load more Ryan Fox has put himself in the frame for a top-20 finish at the US Open with a strong final round at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. The course has been a brutal test for golfers over the past few days, with just 29 under-par rounds in the field across the first three rounds. However, Fox made a strong start in his final round this morning and capitalised to finish with a one-under 69. That saw him move to seven-over for the tournament and a decent chance of a top-20 finish with athletes still on the course. Paired with Canadian Corey Conners, Fox found himself flying solo in his final round at Oakmont as Conners withdrew due to a wrist injury before the start of the round. Conners sustained the injury in his opening round when he hit a hidden TV cable in the lip of a bunker, before aggravating the injury in his third round when hitting a ball out of a plugged lie. After finding the native area off the tee on the par-four ninth, he had to take a drop and it turned into his first bogey of the day. He also lost his streak of not having a three-putt for the tournament on the par-four 10th, giving himself a long putt for birdie but needing three attempts to get the ball in the hole. While the back-to-back dropped shots halted the momentum he had built earlier in the round, Fox got one of those shots back straight away with a birdie on the par-four 11th. A bogey on the par-four 17th saw him fall back to one-under, which was where he stayed with a par on 18. Overall, it was a solid week for the Kiwi, who continued his run of making the cut in major championships. That stretch is now at 10 appearances, and he'll look to make it 11 at The Open later in the year. Oakmont Claims Next Victim as U.S. Open Favorite Withdraws
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2025 U.S. Open has wreaked havoc all week, with more players finishing 20-over par or worse than in red figures. That is because Oakmont Country Club has been a beast, and has even left some literally feeling the pain. Corey Conners came into the 125th U.S. Open ranked among the Top 30 players in the field at Oakmont Country Club. Instead of being among those who get a cut of the $21.5 million purse, he heads home early. The Canadian golfer withdrew from a tournament for the first time in his PGA Tour career. BREAKING: Corey Conners has withdrawn from the U.S. Open due to the wrist injury — Adam Stanley (@adam_stanley) June 15, 2025 He pulled out of the competition due to a wrist injury during the first round when he hit a television cable at Oakmont Country Club, per Sports Net reporter Adam Stanley. Conners shot 72-74 in the first two rounds and got off to a hot start on Saturday. He was 3-under through five holes, but once he got to the 11th, disaster happened. More Photo byStanley first reported that Conners hurt his wrist on his approach shot on 11, where he had a plugged lie. He hacked it out, but came up holding his wrist. At this point, Conners radioed to get a medical person out on the course so that they could check him out. The 33-year-old received treatment from Dr. Stuart Love, the Canadian sports chiropractor, on the 12th tee because they had to keep up the pace. Conners pushed through, but came home 5-over on the back nine. He finished the third round at 8-over heading into the last day of play. Sunday morning, Conners showed up and began his warm-up, but quickly realized playing golf was not happening. "I'm told Corey hit six pitch shots this morning and hurt on every one. Done and out," Stanley wrote in a tweet update after he announced Conners would withdraw. I'm told Corey hit six pitch shots this morning and hurt on every one. Done and out. Unfortunate as he was playing so well through Saturday morning before the plugged lie hack. — Adam Stanley (@adam_stanley) June 15, 2025 Conners and Ryan Fox were slated for the 10:20 a.m. ET tee time. Instead, the RBC Canadian Open winner will have to play as a solo for the final 18 holes at Oakmont. The two-time PGA Tour winner has played some strong golf in 2025, with five top-10s in 15 starts. He only missed one cut ahead of this third major, the Sony Open in Hawaii. His best finish came at the Arnold Palmer Invitational when he claimed solo third. Since that finish, Conners went T6, T8, T18 and left The Masters with his fourth top 10 in five starts. Conners capped off the PGA Championship with a T19. Hopefully, the two-time Presidents Cup team member will recover quickly before the fourth and final major, The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Conners clinched his spot at Portrush earlier this year after his incredible performance at Bay Hill. More Golf: Wyndham Clark Loses Temper, Goes Berserk in U.S. Open Locker Room

Canada's Conners withdraws from US Open due to injury
OAKMONT, United States: Corey Conners withdrew from the US Open just before Sunday's final round at Oakmont due to injury, the US Golf Association said. The 33-year-old Canadian stood on eight-over par 218 after 54 holes, 12 strokes off the lead, and was to have played alongside New Zealand's Ryan Fox. Conners hurt his right arm hacking out of the rough on the 11th hole in Saturday's third round. The world number 21 is listed as playing in next week's PGA Tour signature event, the Travelers Championship. Conners had his best US Open finish last year at Pinehurst when he shared ninth. His only other major top-10 efforts include four over the past six years at the Masters, where he shared eighth in April. — AFP
