List of the top summer movies since ‘Jaws' turned it into blockbuster season in 1975
LOS ANGELES (AP) — 'Jaws' turns 50 this week, and its legacy of the summer movie blockbuster remains strong. The titles that have packed the most summer moviegoers into theaters since 1975 represent some of the best known films of the last half century, including five 'Star Wars' movies, Pixar favorites like 'Toy Story 3' and 'Finding Nemo,' superheroes galore and both 'Top Gun' films. They also include some surprises, and movies both less bombastic and less enduring. Combined, the top-earning summer films between 1975 and 2024 earned more than $15 billion through the summer months, a figure not adjusted for inflation, according to the tracking firm Comscore. It's also worth noting that box-office tracking before 1981 was not as robust as it is today — and there was essentially no summer movie season in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters across the country. In Paris, the world's most attended cinema turns 30
Paris's biggest movie theater, UGC Ciné Cité Les Halles, is celebrating its 30 th anniversary this year as the world's cinema with the highest attendance, according to the Comscore institute. Nearly every Parisian has forgotten, but the first UGC multiplex occupies the site of the former Parc Océanique Cousteau, an ocean-themed attraction that went bankrupt in 1992, as well as a former rock museum and a six-screen cinema, the Forum Horizons. Over the years, the multiplex expanded. With its 27 screens, more than 3,800 seats and an eclectic programming of over 500 films each year, it has established itself as the world's top destination for moviegoers. Last year, it welcomed 2.8 million visitors, ahead of its two main rivals: Lotte Cinema World in Seoul, South Korea, and AMC Empire 25 in New York. "We are the only ones offering such diversity, with films from 65 countries," said Patrice Le Marchand, its director, who started as a young usher in this very cinema. Since 2015, nearly 3 million people have come through its doors each year.
