Community Shield Date Set for Liverpool and Palace

Liverpool Set for Community Shield Showdown at Wembley The stage is set for the 2025 Community Shield, as Liverpool return to Wembley for the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season. The Football Association has confirmed that the Reds will face Crystal Palace on Sunday 10 August, with kick-off at 3pm BST. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement It is a fixture steeped in ceremony, often a footnote in the annals of August, yet its symbolism remains intact. The Community Shield represents more than just a prelude. For Liverpool, it is a chance to set a tone. For Palace, it is a reward for history made. Palace Earn Historic Spot in Season Opener Crystal Palace arrive at this fixture by way of one of the most momentous days in their 119-year existence. Their 1–0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final secured not just silverware but a kind of rebirth. A club too often typecast as perennial survivors, Palace now enter the season with a medal in hand and belief in their stride. Liverpool, in contrast, come as Premier League champions. Their campaign was a relentless march of pressing, possession and precision. The title returned to Anfield, and with it, expectations. This Community Shield tie, then, becomes more than ceremonial. It is a collision of narrative and ambition, of underdog glory and sustained excellence. Wembley Return for Arne Slot This match also serves as an early litmus test for Arne Slot. The Dutchman's last outing at Wembley ended in frustration, as Newcastle denied him in the Carabao Cup final. Now, he returns to the capital with a chance to recalibrate. Advertisement Liverpool's appearance marks their first in the Community Shield since 2022, when they overcame Manchester City 3–1. For a club so used to the pursuit of silverware, occasions like this are not taken lightly. As the FA confirmed, 'The 2025 FA Community Shield will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 10 August, with kick-off at 3pm BST.' There will be no free-to-air broadcast this time, with TNT Sports 1 holding exclusive coverage rights. It ends a brief run of ITV screenings and returns the Shield to subscription screens. Fans Await Further Matchday Details While the date, time and broadcast have been locked in, the finer details are still to be revealed. Liverpool fans will no doubt travel in large numbers, eager for a first glimpse of the new-look Reds with the summer already promising much change. For Palace, the journey to Wembley will again carry echoes of triumph, and perhaps even dreams of more.

Community Shield date and time confirmed as Liverpool takes on Crystal Palace

Liverpool will face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, August 10. The game will kick off at 3 pm local time, which is 10 am ET. The Football Association (FA) confirmed the news on Friday. TNT Sports holds the exclusive live broadcasting rights in the UK, and ESPN is expected to broadcast the big game in the United States. Advertisement The news comes as Liverpool prepares to announce the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, as the player completes his medical on Merseyside. The Reds are also being linked with a move for Marc Guehi, Palace's FA Cup-winning captain. That was Palace's first major trophy in the club's 119-year history, having previously lost the FA Cup final in 1990 and 2016, losing to Manchester United on both occasions. Advertisement As Palace hadn't won the FA Cup before this year, this will be the team's first appearance in the Community Shield. The game is England's version of a super cup and has existed since 1908. It was known as the Charity Shield until 2002. Liverpool knows the Community Shield well, having played in 24 editions of the game. Only Manchester United (31) has appeared in more Community Shields. Liverpool has also shared the trophy five times, as the prize used to be shared when the game ended in a draw. As such, Liverpool is regarded as a 16-time champion of the Community Shield. Advertisement Liverpool's most recent appearance in the Community Shield came in 2022, when Jurgen Klopp's team defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup final to qualify. The 2022 game took place at Leicester's King Power Stadium, where the Reds defeated Manchester City 3-1. Pep Guardiola's players are the defending Community Shield champions, but they are not involved this year after failing to win the Premier League title and losing to Palace in the FA Cup final. Teams qualify for the Community Shield by either winning the Premier League or the FA Cup. If a club wins both of those competitions, the team that finished second in the Premier League, such as Arsenal in 2023, will be invited to take part. Advertisement On occasion, the FA will invite a team to take part in the Community Shield if the league champion, FA Cup winner, or league runner-up is unwilling to take part. In 1971, Arsenal won the league and cup double, but the London team was unable to take part due to preseason friendlies. League runner-up Liverpool and second-tier champion Leicester played the game instead, with the latter winning.

Liverpool star will miss opening game of new Premier League season after ban

Arne Slot will be without vital cog Ryan Gravenberch when Liverpool begin their title defence in August, after the midfielder's final-day sending off against Crystal Palace Liverpool and Arne Slot will be without enforcer Ryan Gravenberch to begin the new Premier League season. The suspended midfielder ended last campaign with a straight red card against Crystal Palace. With the upcoming 2025/26 top-flight season's fixture list now released, the title-winning Reds have discovered the path they'll have to take to retain their Premier League crown. ‌ To kick off the campaign, they'll host Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, August 15, and though a fast and convincing start will be on the agenda, Slot will be without a key midfield cog. Gravenberch was a man revolutionised this season, starting nearly every single league match under his new head coach, who allowed the 23-year-old to blossom as a holding No. 6. ‌ However, during the Reds' final Premier League match in May, a 1-1 draw with Palace, after which they lifted the top-flight trophy aloft for the 20th time, Gravenberch saw red and will be suspended to begin the new term. Ismaila Sarr put the visitors 1-0 ahead after just nine minutes when FA Cup winners Palace visited Merseyside, and this lead remained intact until the second half. After 61 minutes, Gravenberch went into the book after a dive in the Eagles' penalty area, and just seven minutes later, a sky-high clearance landed him in a spot of bother. The Dutch midfielder's touch was wild, and as Palace's Daichi Kamada lifted the ball beyond Gravenberch, who was the last man, he was hacked down. Referee Darren England quickly produced a straight red and handed Gravenberch his marching orders. An 84th-minute Mohamed Salah leveller gave the Anfield hopeful something to sing about on what was a joyous day, though with the new season coming into view, Gravenberch's suspension does too. ‌ The club have confirmed that this suspension will be served when the new season begins, though it is expected that, as his red card was not given for violent conduct, Gravenberch's ban will be for just a single match. Gravenberch will, however, be able to take part in Liverpool' s Community Shield clash against Palace on August 9, when he'll look to build on a campaign that came with a new role and increased minutes. Before Slot's arrival at Anfield, Gravenberch had struggled for game time under Jurgen Klopp, but enlisting him as a more defensive No. 6 turned out to be a masterstroke by the incoming Dutch manager. ‌ "During a phone call in the first conversation I had with Arne, he said to me: 'I see you as a No. 8 but I want to try you as a No. 6,'" Gravenberch told The Athletic. "I played there against Manchester United in pre-season and after that game, he just put me there. I was like: 'OK, let's do it.' "From that moment, I only played as a No. 6. I didn't play a lot in that position before but this season, that position has made me who I am now. I am not naturally a defensive midfielder. I also like to drive forward with the ball. "It's been good so far. This is the first season that we did a good job together as a midfield. To arrive there is easier than to stay there. Hopefully, we can win more trophies together."
