Telegram complies with court order, ‘Edisi Siasat' blocked

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had filed a civil suit against Telegram and two of its channels. (Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : Online messaging platform Telegram has complied with a High Court order to stop the spread of offensive material by purported whistleblower channel 'Edisi Siasat'. Checks on Telegram showed that Edisi Siasat has been blocked this evening, with users notified that the channel 'can't be displayed because it violated local laws'. FMT was made to understand that this was a result of Telegram complying with the interim injunction issued by the High Court. Edisi Siasat has, however, already set up a second channel on Telegram. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had filed a civil suit against Telegram and two of its channels for allegedly spreading harmful content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. The MCMC said Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were found to have published content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Both Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas were anonymous Telegram channels known for publishing whistleblower-style allegations, particularly targeting public institutions and enforcement agencies. Despite being unofficial, their posts often gain traction and trigger public debates. The MCMC reminded social media platforms that they have a duty to ensure that the content on their platforms did not violate Malaysian laws, adding that it would not hesitate to take similar action against other providers.

Finland bans e-scooter use for children under 15

HELSINKI, June 17: Finland on Tuesday implemented a ban on electric scooter use by children under the age of 15, as part of new legislation aimed at tightening regulations on micromobility. The new rules also require e-scooter rental companies to obtain municipal licences to continue their operations. The legislation, passed by Finland's parliament last month, aligns with a broader European trend of increasing oversight on e-scooters, whose rapid rise in popularity has led to safety concerns. Countries such as Italy now require e-scooter riders to wear helmets and carry insurance, while cities like Paris and Madrid have banned e-scooter rentals altogether. "This is a situation that has got completely out of hand, and now it just needs to be brought under control," said Transport and Communications Minister Lulu Ranne in an interview with Reuters. "I hope that in this way we can enjoy scootering safely and according to the rules, and at the same time save lives," she added. According to Finnish authorities, approximately 1,600 people suffer serious injuries in e-scooter accidents annually. Over the past five years, at least six fatalities have occurred, and around 600 children have required hospital care for scooter-related injuries. The updated legislation also introduces new safety measures. E-scooter riders will now be subject to the same blood alcohol limits as drivers of motor vehicles and are banned from riding under the influence of drugs. Additionally, a maximum speed limit of 25 kilometers per hour (15.5 miles per hour) has been set, according to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). Several international e-scooter rental firms currently operate in Finland, including U.S.-based Lime (a subsidiary of Neutron Holdings), Sweden's Voi Technology, Norway's Ryde Technology, and Germany's Tier Mobility. It remains unclear how the new licensing requirement will impact their operations in Finnish cities. The Ministry of Transport and Communications stated that companies failing to comply with the new age restrictions could face fines. Parents may also be held responsible if they knowingly allow underage children to operate e-scooters.

Minister of Government Communications: Jordan's Position Firm in Safeguarding Sovereignty and National Security Amid Regional Escalation

Minister of Government Communications: Jordan's Position Firm in Safeguarding Sovereignty and National Security Amid Regional Escalation Minister of Government Communications and official government spokesperson, Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani, said that Jordan is addressing the military escalation in the region from the standpoint of protecting its national sovereignty and security. اضافة اعلان In press remarks today, Al-Momani emphasized that His Majesty King Abdullah II made it clear from the outset of the crisis that Jordan will not allow any party to use its airspace or territory in the context of conflicts or hostile actions. 'Based on His Majesty's directives, Jordan will in no way serve as a battleground for military confrontations between conflicting parties. The Kingdom is a sovereign state with a duty to safeguard its security and stability,' Al-Momani stated. He affirmed that Jordan will not tolerate any violations of its sovereignty and will take appropriate measures in line with international norms to respond to any aggression or infringement. Al-Momani explained that Jordan's goal is clear: to maintain national security, stability, and the safety of citizens and their property. 'We are operating with high efficiency and continuous preparedness to minimize the impact of the current crisis on Jordan's interests across all dimensions,' he said. He stressed that Jordan's position is unequivocal: the Kingdom does not take sides in the ongoing conflict, but rather remains focused on preserving its own security and stability and avoiding involvement in conflicts in which it is not directly engaged. Al-Momani said: 'Since day one of the crisis, we have been stationed at the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, receiving information from various state institutions, including representatives from the Arab Army, the Air Force, Public Security, and numerous ministries. This center enables us to respond to the crisis effectively and appropriately.' He added: 'As a media and communications team, we were responsible for crafting the official messaging, determining how and when to release information, and identifying the key messages the Jordanian state needed to convey during the crisis. We also managed communication with various media outlets and addressed misleading, false, or inciteful news that aimed to undermine Jordan's stance.' Al-Momani noted that from the beginning of the crisis, the state adopted a media strategy for managing the escalating events, emphasizing the importance of relying on official sources of information and avoiding the spread of rumors and misinformation. He stressed that times of crisis often see a rise in rumors and false news, which requires vigilance and caution in handling such content. On a second level of response, Al-Momani pointed to the legal aspect, which involves monitoring any content or statements that violate the law or threaten national security, with appropriate legal actions taken accordingly. He confirmed that Jordan remains actively engaged in the media space—across both traditional and social media platforms—to counter any campaigns or news that incite against Jordan's position or undermine its national principles, with the goal of preserving the country's image and its consistent stance in support of regional stability. Al-Momani reaffirmed Jordan's firm commitment to preserving national sovereignty and security, stressing the importance of confronting any attempts to breach Jordanian airspace or compromise the safety of its citizens. He concluded by stating that protecting the security of citizens and national sovereignty is a sacred duty of the Jordanian state—one that it will continue to uphold unwaveringly. — (Petra)

Iran-Israel tensions rise as Tehran warns of expanded strikes

BY Libyan Express Jun 16, 2025 - 03:32 Colonel Reza Sayyad Colonel Reza Sayyad, spokesperson for the Communications Centre of the General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, has issued a warning to civilians residing in Israeli-controlled territories, advising them to evacuate immediately. He stated that Iran is preparing a 'broad and decisive response' to recent Israeli military actions, which may target various locations across Israel. According to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, Colonel Sayyad began his statement with a religious invocation and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of launching a new offensive. He described the move as a 'strategic miscalculation' that would prompt what he called a 'powerful, deterrent response' from Iran's military. Sayyad claimed that Iranian forces had, over recent nights, successfully targeted several sensitive locations within Israeli territory, including military and intelligence facilities, decision-making centres, and even the residences of senior military officials and scientists. He further asserted that Iran possesses a detailed intelligence database of key sites within Israel and is capable of striking them at any time. In his message, Sayyad advised civilians to avoid remaining in or near areas that could be considered potential targets, warning that even underground shelters may not provide safety. He urged people not to allow themselves to be used as 'human shields', and to take Iranian warnings seriously. He concluded by accusing Prime Minister Netanyahu of endangering civilian lives in pursuit of personal and political interests. Sayyad warned that ignoring Iran's message would result in 'significantly more difficult days' for residents of the affected areas.
