Aaron Taylor-Johnson hails director Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later approach
Aaron Taylor-Johnson says the 28 Years Later cast were given "freedom of space to make mistakes" by director Danny Boyle. The 35-year-old actor plays Jamie in the new post-apocalyptic horror movie and praised the experimental approach that the acclaimed filmmaker took to the project. Aaron told Collider: "I think most days were definitely a new experience for me, and for us. Very creative. He was experimenting with these different cameras and different rigs and stuff, and not always with a sense of, like, 'This is how it's going to work.' "Some things he'd be like, 'Look, I don't know', and that was quite refreshing because it meant that there was this freedom of space to make mistakes, but be creative and find something new. "He's exceptional. When you're in the hands of Danny, he's got such an enthusiasm and this great energy, he really makes you feel in the safest of hands." Aaron features alongside Jodie Comer in the film with the pair as married couple Jamie and Isla – with Alfie Williams portraying their 12-year-old son Spike – and revealed that he and the Killing Eve actress spoke at length about the background to their characters in the flick that marks the latest installment of the 28 Days Later franchise. The Kraven the Hunter star said: "I feel like there was definitely a lot of love there in their relationship, but we had this two-week period before in the rehearsal period to really kind of dive into how they may have found each other, their relationship to the community, the island. "The one thing that they both can agree on is that they adore their son, and they've raised their son in this community." Taylor-Johnson added: "So, it's fractured, and it's complex, and I like that humanity, that sort of human, flawed aspect of it. Yeah, we talked a lot about the backstory to feel like it was grounded in something." Jodie felt that it was important for the duo to "understand" the background to their alter egos, even though it was often forgotten about when the pair were acting together on set. The 32-year-old star said: "It was like you say, it was important for us to understand that, and honestly, you then have to kind of forget it when you get on the set because you're faced with the material in front of you and where they are at this present moment. "But yeah, it was always important for us to feel that we knew the history before they got to this point." Meanwhile, Aaron revealed that he was "hugely impressed" with the attitude of his young co-star Williams – who is just 14 years of age. He said: "I was hugely impressed with Alfie's focus and his energy every single day. He was so switched on and gave it his all, and terrific to work with. "To have collaborative conversations with Danny and come up with great thoughts and opinions on his character in the scenes, he truly came to work prepared every day. So, it was very impressive, emotionally."

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors He was Henry Cavill's father in "Man of Steel", and now he'll be rejoining Cavill in a different kind of adventure. Collider reports that Crowe has been cast in the Chad Stahelski-directed "Highlander" reboot, in "a key role opposite Henry Cavill" who is leading the film. There is no word yet on exactly who Crowe is playing, but our money's on Ramirez: the part originated by Sean Connery in the 1986 original. Ramirez is a mentor to the hero in the original "Highlander", who teaches Christopher Lambert's Connor MacLeod the ways of the Immortals. The annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Czech "Highlander" reboot has been crawling along in development for years, but the last few months have seen more activity than ever. According to Collider, "Highlander" will begin production in the fall with the hope of releasing the film some time between 2027 and 2028. Along with rebooting the property, Stahelski hopes to evolve the mythology. He told Collider, "We're bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There's big opportunity for action... and it's a bit of a love story — but not how you think." The director also told Collider how he sold the part to Cavill, saying, "My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you've got a guy that's been alive for over 500 years. He's the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation." "So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc... and you get to experience someone that's trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts." In the original "Highlander" Lambert's MacLeod is a 16th century Scottish clansman who is accused of witchcraft when he inexplicably survives being run through during a battle. Cast out of his village, MacLeod eventually learns the truth with the arrival of Ramirez. MacLeod is an immortal who can die only if he loses his head. Other immortals exist, and one day the survivors will be drawn to a great city where they will need to fight over the Prize: something that could save humanity or could plunge the world into darkness, depending on who wins. MacLeod inevitably winds up facing off against the Kurgan (Clancy Brown), a sadistic and otherwise nameless warrior who has been hunting other immortals for centuries. "Highlander" was followed by a number of sequels, spinoff films, and spinoff TV series. ‘28 Years Later' Is the Zombie Sequel You Didn't Know You Needed—Here's How to Watch
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Over two decades after 28 Days Later redefined zombie horror, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland return to their virus-ravaged world with 28 Years Later—the first in a newly planned trilogy. The $60 million sequel sees the Rage Virus still festering on British soil, while the rest of the world has moved on. Opening in theaters today, the film explores not just the ongoing fight for survival, but also the evolution of both the virus and humanity. Set on the remote Holy Island off England's northeast coast, 28 Years Later centers on 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams). who has never known a world beyond the fortified pathway linking his small community to the quarantined mainland. On his birthday, his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) takes him across the water for a harrowing rite of passage—only to find that the infected have evolved. Some crawl; others, now dubbed Alphas, lead organized hunting packs. The film also stars Jodie Comer as Isla, a housebound mother. 'There are moments that feel incredibly heightened—you're out of breath, facing elements of hysteria—but it's brilliant,' Comer told the BBC, describing the intensity of filming without CGI. While 28 Years Later doesn't revisit the immunity storyline from 28 Weeks Later, it does mark the beginning of a new arc that will stretch across two more films. Garland has already penned the second installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and due next year. Boyle, who hopes to return for the trilogy's conclusion, confirmed to Collider that Cillian Murphy's Jim—last seen alive in 28 Days Later—will appear in the second and play a major role in the third. Not yet. The film is currently playing in theaters, with a streaming release date to be announced. Given Sony's distribution history, the title is likely to become available via digital purchase first, followed by streaming on one of its affiliated platforms—though no official plan has been confirmed. In the meantime, you can revisit the earlier films in the franchise: 28 Days Later is now available to stream on Pluto TV, and 28 Weeks Later is on Hulu and Tubi. Get Tickets

‘Off the rails' period drama exposing famous family scandals streaming for free
A promising new period drama about one of Britain's most infamous families is now streaming for free U and U&Drama is now home to one of the most riveting and shocking period dramas of the year - and you can stream it completely for free. Premiering on the free streaming service today (Thursday, 19th June), the six-part series follows a group of aristocratic sisters who become notorious for their high-society antics and radical political views in the 1930s. Set in the years building up to World War II, writer Nancy Mitford (played by Bessie Carter) becomes renowned for her novels while some of her sisters begin to fraternise with fascists and Nazi sympathisers. Outrageous is now streaming and is a must-watch for fans of Downton Abbey, The Buccaneers and series that peer behind the curtains of the darker periods of British history. Speaking to Reach at the series' premiere in London, several cast members shared what makes the new drama by writer Sarah Williams live up to its name. Deborah Mitford star Orla Hill said: 'It's so off the rails that you wouldn't really believe it was real. 'You might think someone had made it up and then it would never get made because it was so crazy.' Her co-star Isobel Jesper Jones (Diana Mitford) added: 'I think it's outrageous that you have this many female characters in it. You could make an entire series of just one of them.' And Zoe Brough (Jessica Mitford) admitted: 'I just can't believe that it hasn't been done before. 'You would think that when pitching these stories of the Mitford sisters that you were making it up. 'It's mixed with so much humour, tragedy, extremism, radicalism. It's all twists and turns, it's overwhelming, so the audience won't know where the trajectories of the characters are going from start to finish.' Reviews are already pouring in for the series and it's clear to see Outrageous is shaping up to be one of the best new historical dramas of 2025 - possibly of the whole decade. Collider gave the series a rave 9/10 write-up, saying: 'Whether you know about the Mitford sisters or not, Outrageous is still worth watching, as it delivers a polarizing, relevant, and lush '30s period drama, both dazzling us and stripping off our rose-tinted glasses.' Decider agreed with their take, adding: 'Outrageous conjures up an impressive feat by balancing multiple acts. 'It's a historic drama that speaks to the here and now, a serious exploration of politics that's also full of fluff, and a classic British drama that feels young and cool.' And AV Club says: 'Despite being set almost a century ago, Outrageous couldn't feel more timely. '[While] it is a fun romp packed with delicious 1930s fashions, illicit affairs, and sibling feuds, [...] it's also a harrowing chronicle of the rise of fascism in Europe. 'That's quite an audacious elevator pitch. But against all odds, the show masterfully blends witty dialogue with a dire historical warning.' This must-watch series is certainly not your average period drama, but there's certainly enough intrigue, twists and shocking revelations to keep viewers hooked. Outrageous premieres Thursday, 19th June on U, U&Drama and BritBox.
