Coronation Street legend to stage TV return just weeks after exit
Coronation Street's Colson Smith is very busy following his departure from the soap. Colson played Craig Tinker from 2011-2025. The character was killed a few weeks ago while on duty as a police officer. 'Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker's time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025,' he wrote on Instagram earlier this year, confirming his departure. 'I've loved every single second of my 14 year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street. 'I've learned pretty much everything about life from the people who call it home. I'm excited to play out the exit story for our Craigy. For me, this is the end of the beginning. 'I genuinely can't wait to see what chapter two has in store for me.' Chapter two for Colson, so far, involves popular TV gameshows. The star previously revealed on the podcast On The Sofa that he will appear on Celebrity Mastermind soon, but he's also set to add another tense quiz show to his list. Colson confirmed in a chat with his co-stars, friends and fellow podcast presenters Jack P Shepherd and Ben Price that he's due to feature on The Weakest Link, hosted by Romesh Ranganathan. The actor went on to share that he's also been approached to appear on BBC One's Pointless, but he obviously needs to do this with a mate. 'They've also come in and asked about Pointless, but I've got to do it with a buddy', Colson said. 'Oh I'll do that. Yeah, I'm good at pointless!', Jack responded. The actor previously told Metro and other publications that it was his decision to be killed off from Corrie, wanting a more finite exit storyline. More Trending 'For me to go, I would want to leave,' he explained. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? 'I would want to die, I would want the door to be shut, so then I can know in my head that Corrie has been this, Corrie has done that, and it is now done, and Craig's journey is over. 'So in a really weird way, it was the right thing for me to be killed. I didn't want that 'we might have you back', knowing that it would be very unlikely, and knowing that it would feel a bit like unfinished business and an unfinished job. Coronation Street cast hit by fresh blow as budget cuts continue to bite
The Coronation Street cast have been hit by a fresh blow amid the ongoing budget cuts - which have seen a number of changes in the long-running ITV soap throughout the year The cast and crew of ITV soap Coronation Street are reportedly said to be "furious" over the latest impact of budget cuts. Earlier this year, it was reported the long-running soap had made changes to filming in a bid to cut back on expenses. Now, the cast and crew have been hit with another huge blow, as the latest impact has reportedly left them forking out for their own summer party. In January, it was reported the show had infuriated some of the cast by reducing the number of established characters filming inside the iconic Rovers Return pub in a bid to save money. The show has also seen a number of departures this year including Colson Smith (Craig Tinker) and Charlotte Jordan (Daisy Midgeley). The latest change reportedly means the cast have had to organise their own summer party, which each person paying £22 per for the bash. They'll also be paying for drinks on top of the sum, which covers venue, entertainment and security. A source told The Sun: 'It's been a difficult few months and people were really looking forward to the party, but it puts a bit of a dampener on things that they have to pay. 'It might not be a lot to some of the bigger known stars but for some staff it is. The fact that drinks aren't included is a real blow too. People aren't really that surprised though considering the constant budget cuts.' The Mirror understands that the Coronation Street crew organised the party, not ITV bosses, and the whole team is said to be looking forward to the event. The Mirror have contacted Coronation Street and ITV for comment. The news comes months after it was announced the soap would be cutting down to five hours a week, rather than six. However, it's not the only ITV soap to have their hours cut, as Emmerdale will also follow suit. The change is set to take place at the beginning of 2026. From January, there will be a soap 'power hour', with Emmerdale airing for half an hour each day at 8pm. Coronation Street will air straight after at 8.30pm each day, again for half an hour, as the drama from the Cobbles returns to its daily offerings. However, there's also a huge positive in January for both soaps, as for the first time ever, they'll join forces in an unprecedented, one-off special episode to launch the broadcaster's new power hour. It will mark the first time a crossover has happened in British soap history, will see characters from both soaps come together in a celebration of the soap genre.

Colson Smith's character Craig Tinker was killed off in Coronation Street, leaving fans of the soap heartbroken earlier this year. Former Corrie star Colson Smith had a sweet reunion with his on-screen partner following his departure from the popular soap. Colson, who portrayed Craig Tinker, had been a part of the show since 2011. However, his time on the programme came to a close recently when his character met a tragic end while on duty as a police officer. It was no surprise that Colson, 26, would be leaving Coronation Street, after announcing the news back in January. At the time, he shared a photo of himself in his character's police uniform, standing on the iconic cobbles, and expressed: "Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker's time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025." Reflecting on his 14-year tenure on the show, Colson mentioned that he had thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. He felt extremely fortunate to have grown up amid the ITV soap environment, crediting the people involved with the show for teaching him valuable life lessons. He also expressed his excitement about portraying Craig's exit storyline. The actor added: "For me, this is just the end of the beginning. I genuinely can't wait to see what chapter 2 has in store for me. LONG LIVE THE COBBLES!". After Colson finished filming his final scenes for Coronation Street earlier this year in March, his character's tragic demise at the hands of newcomer Mick Michaelis unfolded in heartbreaking scenes last month. Craig had been a part of the Weatherfield community since 2011. On Sunday June 15, the beloved former soap star was spotted lending a helping hand at Soccer Aid for UNICEF as reported by the Manchester Evening News, hosted at Manchester United's iconic stadium Old Trafford. Colson Smith joined the roster of famous faces manning the 'appreciation station', fielding calls from generous individuals keen to donate. His accompanying caption was cheerful: "Ey Up, it's Colson at Soccer Aid HQ here! How may I help you? ! ?". The actor's fans didn't take long to pour in their encouragement.
