British Airways trials removing individual water bottles from flights
British Airways is trialling removing water bottles from in-flight drinks services as part of 'efforts to reduce plastic waste'. Economy passengers on long-haul flights connecting London Heathrow with three US cities – Miami, Boston, and Los Angeles – will instead be served cups of water as part of the new sustainability trial. Paper cups provided by cabin crew have temporarily replaced individual plastic water bottles on these select routes for travellers in BA 's economy and premium economy cabins. On a FlyerTalk forum, a passenger flying from Miami to Heathrow said: 'There were no bottles of water they could give me as BA is trialling not offering any bottles of water for two weeks now.' They added that the individual water cuts were 'obviously a cost-saving exercise under the guise of saving the polar bears'. The airline confirmed that a one-week trial reducing single-use plastic onboard is running between 16 and 22 June. BA's Club World and first class passengers are not currently impacted by the experimental plastic bottle ban. A spokesperson for British Airways told The Independent: 'This is a one-week trial on three routes as part of efforts to reduce plastic waste. The views of our customers are very important to us, and we'll be listening very carefully to their feedback.' In October 2024, BA was accused of scrambling to cut costs by frequent flyers after introducing a new brunch service on long-haul flights. The extended breakfast for lunch meals are served on flights that depart between 8.30am and 11.29am. Menu items for the primary inflight meal across seat categories now include cheese frittatas, Belgian waffles and poached eggs on sourdough, rather than a full meal. Several frequent flyers said they considered the changes 'cheap' and a 'major downgrade' of the service. BA said the new brunch service was implemented in line with positive customer feedback on classic brunch dishes and lighter lunch options.

'Ref Cam' footage won't show controversial incidents
Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela wearing the 'Ref Cam' during the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final football match between Spain's Real Madrid and Mexico's Pachuca at the Lusail Stadium in Doha on December 18, 2024. (KARIM JAAFAR) Referees at this month's Club World will wear 'body cams' with the footage used in broadcasts of the game -- but only if the images are of non-controversial incidents, FIFA refereeing officials said on Wednesday. The match referees in the tournament will wear a small camera protruding from their earpiece which will be able to generate video from the referees point of view. Advertisement But while broadcasters will be able to offer unique angles on goals and saves -- as well as close-up live video and sound from the pre-match coin toss -- viewers won't get to see penalty decisions or other disputable moments from the new camera angle. "The objective is to offer the TV viewers a new experience," said Pierluigi Collina, the Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee. Collina said that IFAB, which sets the laws of the game had allowed a trial of the technology and suggested that footage of controversies might be part of a later phase in the future. "Let's do things step by step. At the is a trial. We need to do something new and the simpler the better. So we fixed some rules within a protocol. We will offer these images in the future? Maybe when we learn to run, maybe not, maybe we will do," he said. Advertisement The live images will be broadcast via a private 5G network from the ref to the match production team, said FIFA Director of Innovation, Johannes Holzmuller, who said the live aspect would only be available in the six NFL stadiums being used for the tournament. What Club World Cup fans will be able to see are the VAR reviews, as seen by referees on the pitchside monitor, which will be broadcast on giant screens in the stadium. That video will then be followed by the referee announcing the final decision over the public address system and the television broadcast. The tournament will also see the use of 'enhanced semi-automatic offside' technology which will use 16 cameras linked to AI technology and algorithms which will send an audio message to the assistant referee when an offside player touches the ball. Advertisement The system will likely see the flag raised earlier for offside and reduce cases of play continuing after a clear offside until a later VAR review. The tournament will also be an early introduction of the new law that goalkeepers have eight seconds to release the ball after picking it up - or be punished with a corner. It replaces the previous law that keepers had six seconds to release the ball or give up an indirect free-kick. The goalkeepers will be shown a five second warning by the referee who will count down showing the fingers of one hand. sev/rcw

British Airways flight attendant ‘found naked and dancing in business class toilet' after allegedly taking drugs
A naked British Airways crew member was discovered dancing in a business class toilet while on shift mid-flight after allegedly taking drugs, according to reports. The Sun reported the steward was supposed to be serving meals to passengers on a recent flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow, but had disappeared. When the double-decker Airbus A380-800 was searched, it is claimed that the in-flight crew manager discovered him naked and dancing in the Club World cabin toilet. Staff reportedly dressed their colleague in a spare pair of pyjamas used by first-class passengers before buckling him into a first-class seat, where he stayed for the remainder of the 10-and-a-half-hour trip. The Metropolitan Police said a 41-year-old man on a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow Airport was arrested on suspicion of being unfit for duty. The force said officers were called by cabin crew over concerns for the welfare of a man just after 9.30am. When the plane landed, he was taken to hospital for treatment, before being arrested and later released under investigation as enquiries continue. British Airways told The Independent the incident is a matter for the police. The Met said in a statement: 'At 9.32am, police based at Heathrow Airport were called by cabin crew following the concern for welfare of a man on an inbound flight from San Francisco. 'A 41-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment once the flight had landed. 'Officers arrested the man after he received medical attention. He was arrested on suspicion of being unfit for duty. He has since been released under investigation. 'Enquiries remain ongoing into the circumstances, and an investigation has been launched.'

British Airways flight attendant found dancing naked in business class
A British Airways flight attendant has reportedly been found dancing naked mid-flight. The hostie, 41, was meant to be serving drinks and meals to passengers, instead, after a search, colleagues found him completely naked and jumping up and down in one of the plane's business class toilets. Clearly unable to continue his shift, the man was given a pair of pyjamas to change into before being seated in a first class seat and strapped in for the remainder of the 10 hour flight headed to London from San Francisco, The Sun reports. There were around 470 passengers and crew on board the packed double-decker Airbus A380 at the time. 'We think the guy popped pills when he was meant to be working. It is an extraordinary thing to do,' one co-worker told The Sun. 'The plane was cruising at 37,000ft over the Atlantic, but this bloke seemed to be higher than anyone else. 'Rather than asking passengers 'chicken or beef', he was stripping off and dancing in the toilet. It was a long time before he was located and he was completely out of it. 'Not only is it really dangerous, it is a crazy way to end your BA career. This job can do ridiculous things to people, but staging a one-man disco in a Club World toilet is a new one on me.' On landing, the man, who disembarked in a wheelchair, was given medical attention and arrested by police on suspicion of being unfit for duty. The incident is being investigated and the flight attendant has been suspended.
