Bill Maher torches Sean Penn for Trump meeting hypocrisy: ‘You met with f–king Castro and Hugo Chavez'
Bill Maher torched Sean Penn for criticizing the HBO host's meeting with President Trump – hitting back that the 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' actor had no qualms about sitting down with dictators Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. During an episode of Maher's 'Club Random' podcast on Sunday, Penn ridiculed some of Trump's comments, like his threat to annex Canada, as the pair smoked cigars and drank booze. But Penn said he would not accept an invitation to meet with Trump if he received one, and that he wished Maher didn't spend so much time discussing the visit on his show. 'Really, you meet with f—ing Castro and Hugo Chavez, but not the president of the United States?' Maher retorted. Maher shared on his show in April that he met with Trump during a dinner at the White House organized by musician Kid Rock, a close Trump ally who performed at the Republican National Convention last year. Penn, a longtime Democratic activist, landed big-name interviews in the early 2000s with Communist leaders Raul Castro and Hugo Chavez. Penn previously said he met with Fidel Castro, though that discussion was not made public. 'I just personally wouldn't trust anything that was said in the room [with Trump], including the personality.' Maher dismissed Penn's argument, adding that it's 'not a matter of trusting it.' 'It's like saying, 'I don't want this medical test because I don't want to know.' I want to know,' Maher continued. Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter David Mamet has recalled once receiving a lengthy phone call from Donald Trump after he dared not to go all in on the then-former president's 2020 election conspiracy theories. Trump loyalist Mamet, appearing on Bill Maher's 'Club Random Podcast' this week, remembered being 'kind of iffy' about whether the election had been stolen from Trump during an appearance on Maher's HBO show, 'Real Time.' At 8 a.m. the following day, the Hollywood veteran said he received a call from Trump who told him: 'I saw you on Bill Maher yesterday, you were great. But you wussed out on the question of the stolen election.' Trump then 'talked to me for like 20 minutes about how the election was stolen,' Mamet told Maher. 'But it wasn't,' Maher reminded him. Mamet, a yearslong vocal critic of progressive causes who has called former President Barack Obama a 'tyrant' and described diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as 'garbage,' responded: 'Well, I think it was.' Maher noted how the claim that the election was rigged for now-former President Joe Biden has fallen flat in dozens of court cases, been dismissed by Trump's own commissioners and analysts have described the 2020 vote as 'the most fair, honest election we've ever had.' Mamet argued Trump would have won by a majority had various issues not been suppressed. 'Oh, please. That's so ridiculous,' said Maher, who doubted they would have swung the result. During Maher's Club Random Podcast which aired Sunday, guest Jillian Michaels spoke about supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump and how they are still referred to as 'deplorables' nine years after Hillary Clinton made that disparaging remark about conservative voters. 'Listen, I've met Tom Hanks a couple of times, and he was very kind and very lovely, and his wife was exceptionally lovely,' the fitness trainer and nutritionist said. 'But when he was on Saturday Night Live ….' Maher interjected and said he agreed with Michaels. RECOMMENDED VIDEO 'I hated it, too, and I said it on my show,' Maher said. 'I know. I hated it. During his brief life, Gaye did not come out as either gay or bisexual, and there are scant few accounts claiming he shared sexual or romantic relationships with other men. Jones, however, did imply that the 'Let's Get It On' singer had a dalliance with Marlon Brando. 'He was the most charming motherf—ker you ever met,' Jones said of the 'Godfather' star in a 2018 interview with Vulture. 'He'd f—k anything. Anything! He'd f—k a mailbox. James Baldwin. Richard Pryor. Marvin Gaye,' he added.
