Japan says Chinese fighter jet came within 150 feet of surveillance plane above Pacific
A Chinese fighter jet came within about 150 feet of a Japanese naval reconnaissance plane over the weekend, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Thursday, an action the US ambassador to Tokyo called 'dangerous' and 'reckless.' Saturday morning's close encounter between the Japanese P-3C Orion, a four-engined, turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft and a J-15 jet fighter launched from the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong occurred over international waters of the Pacific, according to a statement from Japan's Defense Ministry. The encounter lasted about 40 minutes, as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense (JMSDF) force plane was on a surveillance mission, according to the statement. The Chinese jet came within 45 meters of the Japanese plane 'horizontally,' the ministry said. Another close encounter between a Chinese fighter and a Japanese plane occurred Sunday, with the Chinese warplane passing about 900 meters (2,950 feet) directly in front of the flight path of a P-3C, the ministry statement said. 'Such unusual approaches by Chinese military aircraft could lead to an accidental collision,' it said. US Ambassador to Japan George Glass was blunter in his criticism. 'The recent dangerous maneuver by a Chinese fighter jet that put Japanese crewmembers' lives in peril,' Glass said in a post on X, sarcastically calling the incident 'another of Beijing's 'good neighbor' efforts.' 'Whether it's harassing Philippine ships, attacking Vietnamese fishermen, or firing flares at Australian aircraft, Beijing knows only reckless aggression,' Glass said. In the past several years, China has been accused of all those actions in the South China Sea and other areas of the Indo-Pacific. At a defense forum in Singapore last month, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said China exhibits a pattern of harassing and trying to intimidate its neighbors. 'We have all seen the videos and pictures of water cannons and ship-to-ship collisions and illegal boardings at sea. We are also seeing the illegal seizing and militarizing of lands in the South China Sea,' he said at the Shangri-La Dialogue. 'These actions reveal a lack of respect for neighbours, and they challenge sovereignty, freedom of navigation and overflight,' he said. The Chinese-Japanese encounters occurred in international waters in the Pacific as Beijing sent two aircraft carrier groups to the region for training exercises. The Chinese carriers and their escorts were practicing far-sea defense and joint operations, a military statement said. 'This is a routine arrangement included in the annual training plan, aiming to improve the Chinese PLA Navy's ability to fulfill missions. The training complies with relevant international law and practice, and is not targeted at specific countries or entity,' Senior Capt. Wang Xuemeng, spokesperson for the Chinese PLA Navy, said in a written statement.

Amy Poehler reveals she shared a dressing room with Meryl Streep during 'SNL50'
Amy Poehler revealed her experience sharing a dressing room with Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep during "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" on Monday. Appearing on Conan O'Brien's podcast"Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" on Monday, while the pair swapped celebrity encounters during the "SNL50" festivities, Poehler revealed her unexpected dressing room companion. "There were so many people that people had to share dressing rooms," Poehler told O'Brien. "So, I was sharing my dressing room with Meryl Streep. Just like a fan, I was taking a picture of the door that said my name and Meryl Streep." She went on to describe watching the legendary actress prepare for her "SNL" debut. "She was getting ready for her sketch and really rehearsing it and I remember thinking, 'I have never rehearsed as hard as Meryl Streep has in this one moment,'" Poehler added. Streep made her first-ever "SNL" appearance during the anniversary special's "Close Encounter" sketch joining Kate McKinnon, Woody Harrelson, and Pedro Pascal at the Pentagon to discuss their alien encounters. The recurring skit follows McKinnon's character, Colleen Rafferty, as she vividly recounts bizarre and often suggestive alien abductions — while manspreading and smoking a cigarette. For the anniversary special, Streep played Colleen Rafferty Sr., the equally unfiltered mother who also had raunchy run-ins with extraterrestrials. Known for making co-stars break character, McKinnon may have met her match in Streep, who stole the show. Poehler also found herself sitting next to Jack Nicholson in the audience during the star-studded evening. The Oscar-winning actor introduced his "Anger Management" co-star Adam Sandler's performance in the show. "In the seats, which was a night of all famous alumni and people, I sat down and turned to my left and it was Jack Nicholson," Poehler said. "I was like, 'Of course. My old friend, my dear friend Jack Nicholson.'"

Meryl Streep makes first-ever ‘SNL' appearance during 50th anniversary special
Ladies and gentlemen, Meryl Streep has finally made her 'Saturday Night Live' debut. Streep has never hosted nor appeared on 'SNL' before Sunday, when she made her first-ever appearance during the long-running sketch show's starry 50th anniversary special. The three-time Oscar-winner appeared in a recurring 'Close Encounter' sketch featuring 'SNL' alum Kate McKinnon, whose character describes her NSFW alien abduction. The sketch featured an all-star ensemble including Woody Harrelson and Pedro Pascal, who got abducted by the aliens with McKinnon, but describe a much more pleasant experience. They are questioned by military officials played by Jon Hamm and Aidy Bryant. Streep entered the scene as McKinnon's character Colleen Rafferty's mother, wearing an outfit similar to Colleen's signature pastel Hawaiian shirt, complete with a cigarette in one hand and a styrofoam cup in the other. Colleen Senior describes her own X-rated alien abduction, going on to mention how the aliens 'lost interest' and stuffed her in a closet. When Streep-as-Colleen Sr. tells her escape tale, Pascal leans over to flirtatiously tell her she's a 'good mother.' 'Yeah, well, a good mother can also be a bad girl,' she says to him, turning in her seat suggestively toward him. Oscar-winner Jack Nicholson, sporting his signature sunglasses, also made a surprise appearance during the special. His appearance, too, marked his 'SNL' debut when he introduced Adam Sandler, who sang an original song about the 50-year history of 'SNL.' Nicholson, 87, has rarely made public appearances in recent years.
