Putin says he's open to meeting Zelensky, even as he denies his legitimacy

Days after a Russian attack on Kyiv destroyed apartment blocks and killed 28 people, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied in remarks published Thursday that Moscow was targeting civilians and said he was open to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, even while still questioning his legitimacy. Putin spoke to international news agencies late Wednesday on the margins of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum as the U.S.-sponsored peace process has been faltering, with little progress toward any kind of cessation of hostilities.

How likely will the US join Israel in its war against Iran? Analysts weigh in

As the Israel-Iran aerial war enters its sixth day on Wednesday (Jun 18), speculation is mounting that the United States is considering joining its ally Israel in direct military action against Tehran. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called for Iran's 'unconditional surrender', warning that Washington's patience was wearing thin. He has reportedly spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the phone, while the US military is said to be deploying more aircraft to the Middle East, including fighter jets and refuelling tankers. Analysts told CNA this could mean Trump bringing the US into the conflict, though they cautioned it remains tough to tell for certain. 'Calling for the unconditional surrender of a sovereign nation state is pretty extreme. We haven't heard that rhetoric very often,' noted politics professor Stephen Zunes from the University of San Francisco. 'It has really sent some shock waves and is making people think that this is not just going to be a series of strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, but something much bigger.' He pointed to how Israel's military and Trump have urged residents to evacuate from Iran's capital city of Tehran, which has a population of more than 9 million. 'There, indeed, could be a much bigger war, and the United States itself might get involved,' Zunes said. In Iran, officials have reported at least 224 deaths, mostly civilians. In Israel, officials said 24 civilians have been killed.

Israeli strikes have killed nearly 600 in Iran, human rights group says

Israeli strikes have killed at least 585 people across Iran and wounded 1,326 others, a human rights group said Wednesday. The Washington-based group Human Rights Activists said it had identified 239 of the dead as civilians and 126 as security personnel. The group, which also provided detailed casualty figures during the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, crosschecks local reports in the Islamic Republic against a network of sources it has developed in the country. Iran has not been publishing regular death tolls during the conflict and has minimized casualties in the past. Its last update, issued Monday, put the death toll at 224 people killed and 1,277 others wounded.

God spared you for this moment, Israel ambassador tells Trump

The US ambassador to Israel told Donald Trump that God saved him from assassination so he could deal with the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. 'God spared you in Butler, PA, to be the most consequential president in a century – maybe ever,' Mike Huckabee wrote in a private text message published by the US president on social media. 'You did not seek this moment. This moment sought YOU!' Likening the stakes to the US decision to drop nuclear bombs on Japan in the Second World War, he told Mr Trump 'only' to listen to God when it comes to making his next choices. He said: 'I believe you will hear from heaven and that voice is far more important than mine or ANYONE else's.' The exchange of fire between Israel and Iran has spread into six days of bombardment and threatened to ensnare the US, even though Mr Trump campaigned for a return to the White House as someone who could bring peace to various conflicts. The US has not been involved in any of the attacks on Iran, which have killed a reported 224 civilians, with Israel focusing its strikes on military targets and the facilities of its nuclear programme. Iran has struck back with hundreds of ballistic missiles, killing 24 people and injuring more than 647. The US helped Israel shoot down some of those missiles. The US had for several months been talking to Iran to broker a deal that could seek to control its desire to have a nuclear weapon. In 2018, Mr Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from a multi-party agreement that saw Iran agree to more checks on its nuclear program in exchange for a loosening of sanctions. The decision left the US scrambling for something to fill its place, much to the consternation of Israeli leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, who have argued that Israel cannot permit Iran to possess a nuclear weapon. Mr Trump has long shared that view. The shifting situation on the ground has created a headache for the president, who has repeatedly insisted he did not want the US involved in another war in the Middle East. Many high-profile supporters, such as Tucker Carlson, hold the view that it is not in America's interest to get involved militarily. Even among Mr Trump's Maga base, there are striking differences on whether the US should aid Israel or remain at arms length. On Monday evening, Mr Trump, 79, cut short a visit to the G7 summit in Canada, where he had been speaking to foreign leaders on the best way to proceed, and returned to the White House. It is understood he is gearing up to meet with a number of advisers in the situation room on Tuesday, as they weigh up how to approach the escalating Middle East situation. On social media, the president dismissed reports he had been working towards a ceasefire and said he was seeking something 'much bigger than that'.
