Samsung's DCI-Certified Onyx Cinema LED Screens Are Now Available In The US And Europe
Samsung has today announced that the latest range of its innovative Onyx LED megascreens for commercial movie theaters is now available for installation in cinemas in both Europe and the U.S., bringing their unique mixture of true black levels, high dynamic range-friendly brightness and native 4K resolutions to a whole new global audience. Samsung's announcement that its latest Onyx screens are now coming to Europe accompanies Onyx's first appearance at the current CineEurope 2025 convention – which comes hot on the heels of the technology also making its debut appearance in the U.S. at CinemaCon 2025 in April. Samsung's Onyx Cinema LED screens could be heading to a cinema near you soon - and Pixar's Elio is ... More literally made for the HDR experience Onyx can deliver. The Onyx screens are the world's first cinema LED displays to be certified by the commercial theater world's Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) consortium – a group of major motion picture studios formed to establish specifications for a common architecture for digital cinema systems. While Onyx screens have been installed in a small number of theaters in Samsung's native South Korea for years now, though, the brand has seemingly struggled to move the technology to a position where it can be shipped, installed and supported on a much wider scale. Now, though, it looks like Onyx is finally ready to make its bid for world domination. The latest DCI-certified Onyx screens are available with eye-catching 10 year warranties in standard five, 10, 14 and 20 metre sizes, but with other 'flexible scaling options' also possible. They feature native 4K resolutions, and are capable of playing films at frame rates up to 120Hz, raising the potential for more filmmakers to start working with higher frame rates again following the pioneering work of Peter Jackson, Ang Lee and, most recently, James Cameron, who used shifting frame rates in Avatar: The Way Of Water. Since Onyx screens use self-emissive panels, they can deliver pretty much perfect black levels in a way that no traditional projector-based theatrical system can, as well as richer colours and higher brightness peaks (up to 300 nits) than regular theatrical projectors can accomplish. This all opens the door to wider use of high dynamic range mastering for theatrical releases, too. Having watched It: Chapter One on one of the earliest Samsung LED cinemas during a visit to South Korea a few years back, I'd say this issue of Onyx really needing theatrical content to be specifically mastered to make the most of its unique capabilities really is an important factor in the format potentially taking off in the global cinema market. So it's promising to learn that no less a Hollywood giant than Pixar Animation Studios appears increasingly committed to delivering its theatrical releases in a 4K HDR format compatible with Samsung Onyx. Pixar's new animated film Elio, which is set to make its global theatrical premiere from tomorrow (June 18), is going to be available in the Onyx-supported 4K DCI HDR format, in fact, and the studio has even stated that it aims to install one of the new Onyx displays at is Emeryville campus in California that it will use during production to evaluate HDR color and brightness and conduct theatrical content quality tests, as well as, most importantly for Onyx's long-term future, using it to host demonstration screenings for filmmakers. 'Samsung's Onyx screens allow our Pixar artists to present their stories exactly as they envisioned them – vivid, dynamic, and true to life,' says Jessie Schroeder, VP Post Production at Pixar Animation Studios. 'By mastering our films in HDR with Onyx, we continue to unlock a new level of visual storytelling for filmmakers and deliver the next generation of cinematic experiences for our audiences.' The new Onyx screen will be in residence at Samsung's booth at the CineEurope 2025 event in Barcelona from now through to June 19 – or if you happen to be in the vicinity of the Culver City Theater in Los Angeles, an Onyx screen has actually been installed there since 2024. — Related Reading JBL Unveils New Soundbar Range—including 16-Channel, 2,370W Flagship With Groundbreaking AI Sound Boost Technology TCL's Display Development Division Unveils New OLED And LED Advances—Including 'World's Highest Image Quality LCD TV' BenQ Unveils Two New 4K HDR Home Cinema Projectors—Including 4K/120Hz Gaming Support

New ‘John Wick 5' Update Reveals Keanu Reeves Isn't Onboard With a Prequel
While the ending of John Wick 4 left the obvious impression that we had seen the last of Keanu Reeves in his popular role, fans were given a Christmas present in early April. At CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, revealed that Reeves and director Chad Stahelski were working on John Wick 5. The news came a bit out of left field, but the initial belief was that it'd happen after spinoffs such as the recently released Ballerina and upcoming film Caine. Regardless, given how John Wick 4 ended, it was bound to be a tall task for Stahelski and Reeves to finalize a game plan quickly. That's proven to be the case, and since the announcement, the comments from Stahelski about the fifth movie in the series have been candid, but they have also led to some concern for fans. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, a question was posed to Stahelski, citing the director's plan not to renege on the ending of the fourth film, meaning John Wick will still be dead, and whether it's "evolved." Stahelski first discussed the writing, but mentioned that "it's a matter of whether we crack [the story]." "I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who's also writing 5 — we've got a pretty good story that I think is cool," Stahelski said. "Once we have a 50-page book, and if we're feeling it, we'll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. Look, everybody seems to want it. It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?"Along with a mildly worrisome comment about "cracking" the story, the director also tossed out the hypothetical that they "go down the road of John Wick 5" but "decide this isn't right." "If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn't right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we'll discover that we'll use for other things," he said. "It's a great creative exercise. It's being in the room riffing with people we love. That's nothing but wins." The general approach leaves the feeling that there's plenty of uncertainty around John Wick 5, at least from Stahelski and possibly Reeves. He ultimately told The Hollywood Reporter that "the studio would very much will [the movie] into existence" at some point, and that "we're going to try" while citing that they do have a couple of really good ideas already. So by this point, fans are likely thinking about what you may consider the obvious route for the fifth installment of the John Wick series—a prequel. To the credit of THR, the question about a possible prequel was posed to Stahelski, but was promptly turned back. Stahelski revealed that Reeves isn't interested in a John Wick prequel, and that he's in the same boat. "Keanu and I are not interested in going backwards," Stahelski said of a possible John Wick prequel. With Reeves and Stahelski both out on the idea of a prequel, and the latter planning to stick with the storyline that leaves John Wick dead, the director needs to formulate a highly unique approach for a fifth film. It's easy to understand why Stahelski is approaching John Wick 5 in the fashion he is. Fortunately, it doesn't appear there's a reason to sound the alarm at this point, but we also shouldn't expect significant news about the fifth movie anytime in the immediate 'John Wick 5' Update Reveals Keanu Reeves Isn't Onboard With a Prequel first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 11, 2025

Brad Pitt Would Reunite with Tom Cruise for Another Movie If It's 'On the Ground': 'Not Gonna Hang My Ass Off Airplanes'
Brad Pitt would star in another movie with Tom Cruise under one condition, he revealed at the Mexico City F1 premiere Pitt also reacted to his Interview with the Vampire costar's praise for F1 at the premiere, calling Cruise "so sweet" The actors used to go-kart race on the set of Interview with the Vampire, Cruise revealed earlier this yearIt's a good day to be an Interview with the Vampire fan! At the Mexico City premiere of his latest movie F1 on June 9, Brad Pitt revealed whether he would ever share the screen again with Tom Cruise, his costar in the iconic Anne Rice adaptation. His answer? Yes — but a conditional yes. On potentially combining star power with Cruise, 62, onscreen in the future, Pitt, 61, told E! News, 'Well, I'm not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and s--- like that, so… when he does something again that's on the ground.' The glimmer of hope — particularly for fans of the actors' work as vampy duo Louis and Lestat — came just after the outlet revealed to Pitt that Cruise has been publicly supportive of the sports drama. The news sparked a wholesome response. 'It's so sweet,' the F1 star said of his former costar's praise. 'He's so sweet.' Cruise sang praises for the upcoming Joseph Kosinski-directed film — which stars Pitt as a former Formula 1 driver — earlier this year, on the same day he shared a fond memory the duo shared on the Interview with the Vampire set. While discussing his own film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, at CinemaCon 2025 in April, Cruise made note of director Christopher McQuarrie's work on the script for a different Pitt film, 2013's World War Z, per CinemaBlend. He then shouted out Pitt and F1, as well as the film's producer-director duo. 'Brad's got a new movie with Jerry Bruckheimer, Joe Kosinski,' Cruise said at the time, adding that he 'can't wait to see that this summer. It'll be awesome.' 'It's great to see Brad driving,' the Mission: Impossible star added. 'He's very good. He's a very good driver. Believe me, I've raced against him. When we were doing Interview with the Vampire, we'd go and race go-karts. We'd literally finish and go drive go-karts all night.' Pitt also remembers the actors' racing days well, he revealed at the Mexico City F1 premiere. 'We did have our go-kart days back in the '90s, the early '90s,' he told E! News. Pitt also admitted to the outlet that where speed was concerned, Cruise took the cake. 'He got me in the end, I gotta tell you,' the F1 star said of their racing days. As for what Pitt's soon-to-be released racing film would look like if it was Cruise, not Pitt, was in the driver's seat? Kosinski, who also directed Top Gun: Maverick, recently pondered that very possibility while chatting with GQ magazine. 'Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled,' the director told the magazine. 'They both have the natural talent for driving.' "But yeah,' he added, seemingly referring to Cruise's affinity for intense stunts, 'I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.' James Gunn Calls Out Zack Snyder Fans Threatening 'Superman'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors "Superman" remains one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Not only is it bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen, it also marks the beginning of a new DC Universe led by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. However, not everyone is happy with the change, particularly of the Zack Snyder-led "Snyderverse" group of films. While a majority of these movies weren't well-received commercially, their is still an incredibly vocal fanbase that considers the likes of "Man of Steel," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and "Justice League" some of the best superhero movies ever made. Now, a vocal minority of those fans have spoken out, threatening to tank and review bomb the highly anticipated film. More Entertainment: Pixar Reveals New 'Toy Story 5' Villain "Stand up and fight for SnyderVerse on July 11," a Reddit user said, per Zack Sharf of Variety. "Fight for our SnyderVerse on the imposter 'Superman' release day." The Reddit user then left detailed plans to review bomb and reserve tickets so that "Gunn-bots" won't be able to leave "fake positive reviews" or buy tickets. "Gunn fired the first shot and killed the SnyderVerse, and here is our chance to take the fight back to him," the user concluded. Needless to say, this has gotten the attention of DCU fans around the world, and now Gunn himself has spoken out. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy are going to impact the course of events" — Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) June 16, 2025 Gunn gave further detail in his recent interview with Brian Hiatt of Rolling Stone, noting that he doesn't mind this kind of negativity. "I don't mind it. I think it's good," Gunn said. "I think you don't wanna have everybody root for you, And I have an actor who reads everything online. I won't say who it is, but he'll read this article, and he'll know who it is. It's one of the top five in Superman. "And this actor gets so upset over things that people say. I said, 'First of all, you realize that the trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive. These people help us, because you don't want everything to seem 100% positive.'" "It's all right to have an opposing force every once in a while," Gunn concluded. "Some of the things get ridiculous — I just know that every time something comes out, it doesn't matter how positively received, there's gonna be something that is of great controversy. It was great controversy that the sun caused Superman pain." More Entertainment: 'A Minecraft Movie' Hits HBO Max for Free Streaming in June: What to Know In the end, it seems that this kind of tribalism isn't helpful for anyone, especially since Gunn even got advice from Snyder when it came to Superman's suit. "One of the biggest questions was, 'Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?'" Gunn said in an interview with Fandango. "I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, 'I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and at the end of the day, I tried it, but I just couldn't get there.' And I was feeling exactly the same way. ... Theoretically, I liked the idea of trunks because it's the Superman I grew up with." James Gunn Responds to 'Superman' Rumor
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. James Gunn responded to a rumor about the runtime of his upcoming film Superman on social media this week. Newsweek reached out to Gunn's representative via email for comment. The Context Gunn, 58, is the CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman, which will be released this summer. The first trailer for the highly anticipated film dropped in December and an extended sneak peek was shared during April's CinemaCon. The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Prior to 2025's Superman, the most recent Superman films were 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2013's Man of Steel and 2006's Superman Returns. VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images What To Know On Wednesday, Gunn took to Threads to share an announcement about Superman. "Excited to bring @Superman to audiences in China on July 11," he wrote alongside a poster of the film in Chinese. In the comments of his post, Threads user @dcdomain wrote: "Hey james is the runtime for Superman locked? There's rumors that it's 2h2minutes." In response, Gunn said, "That is not correct. It's almost totally locked - meaning we're just finishing a couple VFX shots over the weekend - but that's not the running time." "Thank you James," @dcdomain wrote back. "Can't wait!" Last month, Gunn hinted at what fans can expect to see in the film. "The central conflict revolves a lot around Lex Luthor's attempts to defeat and destroy Superman," he told Entertainment Weekly in April. "I think Lex Luthor thinks of Superman in the way that an artist thinks of AI. Here's this guy who's this [incredible] genius scientist who's worked his whole life to become one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, and he does it all to be lauded. I mean, he wants to be the greatest, and suddenly this jerk comes in wearing a cape with a lantern jaw and a cocky grin, and he just takes all of the oxygen out of the room, out of the room of Earth, and it creates a burning hatred in the guy." What People Are Saying In the comments under Gunn's Threads response, many fans said they hope for an even longer runtime. @ "Thank Goodness! I really want this movie to be 2:20 or more, coz I want to spend more time in this world of James Gunn's Superman and with several of its characters!" @fahimmia01: "Hope its around 2h 30m long." @rickyjmarc: "Certainly hope it's a little longer than that. I haven't seen Superman on my theater screen in over a decade. Long overdue. Worth the runtime." @batmanvengeance2024: "I hope it's longer than 2 hour 10 minutes..." @malg.1234: "I would watch 5 hrs of this movie ngl even though obviously that's not possible." What Happens Next Superman hits theaters on July 11.
