The dawn of a new Superman: Why the new movie will see fans fall in love with the DC Universe all over again

One of the most hotly anticipated films of the year is almost here, and the countdown to Superman has DC fans on the edge of their seats. With opening night just weeks away, excitement is reaching fever pitch as audiences prepare to witness the dawn of a new era in the DC Universe. All eyes are on writer-director James Gunn and new star David Corenswet, tasked with reintroducing the Man of Steel to cinemagoers, as Superman launches 'Gods and Monsters,' the first chapter in the rebooted DC Universe. The newly imagined superhero story by Gunn, who helmed Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, promises epic action as well as humour and heart. Fans got their first taste of the reboot at CinemaCon 2025, where early footage hinted at a Superman that feels both fresh and nostalgic. The trailers show that the films honours the legacy of the classic comics and beloved films of the Silver Age era of the 1950s through 1970s. Marking a shift from the darker tone of recent iterations led by Henry Cavill, this new take embraces a brighter aesthetic and a more hopeful, morally grounded hero: a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. Starring in the dual role of Superman and Clark Kent, Corenswet made a name for himself in Ryan Murphy series The Politician, which he followed up with roles in Pearl, Hollywood and Twisters. Lois Lane is portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, who starred in the much acclaimed series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from 2017 to 2023. Mad Max and The Great actor Nicholas Hoult plays Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. The storyline is being kept tightly under wraps by DC Studios, however the latest trailer reveals that Superman's initiative in stopping a war is attracting criticism from the public and the ire of the government, which views his actions as meddling in international affairs. We also know from previous comments by Gunn, that the film will explore Superman's struggle to 'reconcile his Kryptonian legacy with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas'. While a host of DC characters are set to appear— including Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho and Supergirl— James Gunn has confirmed that this movie is no ensemble piece a la Justice League, and will centre on the key players Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. The cast of supporting characters includes Dora and the Lost City of Gold star Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, X Men: First Class actor Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Guardians of the Galaxy's Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern. This year marks a new dawn for the DC Universe under the stewardship of James Gunn and co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran, with Superman the first live action project to be unveiled. The universe's foundational blockbuster is expected to set the tone for upcoming spin-offs, sequels and ensemble projects as the DCU reestablishes itself in cinema with fresh takes on characters and storylines. Upcoming DC movies in the works include Batman film The Brave and the Bold, reported to be in early development. This Batman is separate from the current franchise starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. TV series Lanterns is currently filming and is expected to be released in 2026. Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, starring the Australian star of Sirens and House of the Dragon Milly Alcock, has wrapped filming and is slated for a 2026 release in cinemas. So diehard DC Comics fans have plenty to be excited about, and Superman is just the beginning. To secure your seat on opening weekend, fans can pre-purchase tickets now by visiting the website. Superman is only in cinemas from July 10. Tickets are on sale now.

Keanu Reeves Reportedly Has One Big Condition to Return For JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 5 — GeekTyrant

Keanu Reeves may be ready to suit up as John Wick one more time, but only on one condition, the action has to match what his 60-year-old body can actually handle. According to In Touch, Reeves is being 'perfectly honest' with the creative team behind John Wick: Chapter 5 as development slowly moves forward. A source told the outlet, 'The script is being written and Keanu is being perfectly honest about what he's willing and not willing to do stunt-wise. There's no faking this. He's being totally honest about what he can and can't do, and he had put his body through hell for these movies.' Reeves has never been one to shy away from the punishing stunts and physically demanding sequences that define the franchise, but after four films and years of wear and tear, he's drawing some boundaries. It's not about stepping back from action entirely, but about being smart about what's possible now. If John Wick: Chapter 5 is going to happen, the wild set pieces that fans love need to be tailored to fit what Reeves is actually capable of at this point in his career. Lionsgate officially announced the film back in April at CinemaCon, with franchise director Chad Stahelski once again at the helm. But even with that announcement, the movie isn't a sure thing just yet. Stahelski has admitted that developing the next chapter is tricky, saying, 'cracking the story is a bit of a conundrum.' After all, John Wick did seemingly die at the end of Chapter 4. Still, Lionsgate is eager to make it happen. Stahelski even joked that the studio 'would very much will [John Wick 5] into existence' if they could. But for Reeves to come back, the team has to find a version of the movie that both works narratively and respects the limits Reeves is setting. The franchise has always centered on Reeves doing the real stunts, which added a level of authenticity that helped elevate John Wick above the usual action fare. But, maybe it's time to evolve the formula. He's already mentioned his knees may not survive another gauntlet of stair falls. That doesn't mean the next John Wick film has to go soft. If anything, reimagining the action to suit an older, wearier Wick could give the movie something fresh and interesting. What does an aging assassin's last stand look like when it's not just bullets and broken bones, but strategy, restraint, and experience? If the team can crack a story that respects what the franchise has built and what Reeves is ready to give, it could be something special. But if they can't? Maybe it's okay to let the Baba Yaga finally rest.

See Jeremy Allen White Perform Bruce Springsteen's 'Born To Run' in First 'Deliver Me From Nowhere' Trailer

Jeremy Allen White is stepping into Bruce Springsteen's shoes for his next big screen role. On Wednesday, June 18, 205h Century Studios released the trailer for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, a biopic that stars White, 34, as Springsteen while he records his sixth album "Nebraska." The trailer meets Springsteen recording music in a home with his guitar tech (Paul Walter Hauser) as his manager Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) persuades Columbia Records executives to let him release the stripped-back album. The movie appears to explore Springsteen's relationship with his childhood; the trailer also shows footage of The Bear star during an energetic performance of Springsteen's 1975 classic "Born To Run. The movie "chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen's 1982 'Nebraska' album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past," reads an official synopsis. "Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen's New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe," the synopsis adds. White and Strong appeared together at CinemaCon in April to tease the movie, with White stating that making the movie "was incredible, challenging and a dream come true." "I feel really lucky. We all had Bruce's blessing," White told an audience at the time. "The film tells the story of a very pivotal moment, Bruce struggling to reconcile the pressures of success versus his past." The movie is written and directed by Scott Cooper and based on author Warren Zanes' book of the same name. Beyond White, Strong and Hauser, the movie's cast also features Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Gaby Hoffman, Marc Maron and David Krumholtz. Springsteen himself visited the set of the biopic multiple times in fall 2024 and early 2025; he and White were snapped sharing a hug on set, and the legendary rock musician also posed on set with Matthew Anthony Pellicano, who plays Springsteen as a child in the upcoming movie. Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere is in theaters Oct. 24. Read the original article on People
