Outback Queensland town mourns Yaraka Hotel publican Chris Gimblett

Outback publican Chris Gimblett is being remembered for his significant contributions to the small Queensland community of Yaraka. The 86-year-old died after his vehicle rolled on Isisford Ilfracombe Road on Tuesday afternoon. His wife Gerry was in the passenger seat and was taken to hospital with critical injuries. The Gimbletts owned the Yaraka Hotel since 2014, when they returned to live in the town after two decades away. "He loves Yaraka — he fell in love with it when they moved there in the '80s," son Nick Gimblett said. The Yaraka Hotel made headlines when Chris put up signs informing patrons that emus were banned from entering the pub. Chris and Gerry have been a huge part of the tiny town, which has a population of about 20. Chris was the principal of Yaraka's local school in late 1980s and early '90s. The family had been living in Beaudesert before they made the move back west with plans to help revive the small town. "The opportunity came up to buy the Yaraka Hotel and mum and him decided to make the move," Nick said. Gerry remains in Longreach Hospital. "She's got a long road ahead of her — physical injuries and then, obviously, dealing with losing dad at the same time," Nick said. "She's got an amazing support group — the family can't be more thankful for everyone's kind words and support. "The support is unreal, people are just helping left, right and centre … it's been amazing."
