Jazz Chisholm Jr. homers against Angels to end 30-inning scoreless streak for the Yankees

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees ended their 30-inning scoreless streak Wednesday night when Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the second inning against the Los Angeles Angels. Trailing 1-0, the Yankees ended their run-scoring drought when Chisholm sent a 2-0 pitch from Los Angeles starter Jack Konchanowicz into the seats in right field. The ball stayed just inside the foul pole and Chisholm, and his 10th homer of the season, was celebrated in the dugout with his teammates. The run was New York's first since Anthony Volpe hit an RBI groundout in the ninth inning of its 4-3 loss at Boston on Saturday. It was the seventh-longest scoreless streak in team history and seven behind the team record set Sept 3-8, 1908 against Washington, when Walter Johnson pitched three straight complete games against the Yankees. It was New York's longest scoreless streak since going 33 innings without a run Sept. 22-25, 2016. The Yankees ended that streak when Didi Gregorius homered in the seventh inning at Toronto. The last team to get blanked in four straight games was the Kansas City Royals, who were scoreless for 45 innings Aug. 24-29, 2017. The major league scoreless record is 48 innings, held by the 1968 Chicago Cubs and 1906 Philadelphia Athletics. New York's 4-0 loss on Tuesday marked the seventh time in team history it was blanked in three straight games, but only the third instance in the past 50 years. New York began Wednesday with five straight losses and mustered only five runs in its past six games, including a 1-0 win last Thursday in Kansas City. The last time the Yankees scored five runs or fewer in a six-game span was August 1968. Despite the recent struggles, the Yankees lead the AL with a plus-98 run differential. New York also entered Wednesday leading the AL with 109 homers and 373 runs. ___ More AP baseball: recommended

Shelter-in-place order lifted in Chisholm after "shooting incident," police say

An overnight shooting in the northern Minnesota city of Chisholm prompted a shelter-in-place order that has since been lifted, police said. The Chisholm Police Department issued the order for the area around the 100 block of Fifth Street Northwest around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, advising residents of "an ongoing law enforcement operation involving multiple agencies." Just after 3:30 a.m., the department lifted the order, saying "there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time." Police said a "shooting incident" spurred the order, but gave few other details. "All individuals connected to this incident have been identified and accounted for," police said. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is aiding in the investigation. Chisholm is about 75 miles north of Duluth.

Yankees veteran infielders make two miscues that prove costly

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free On another night of offensive woes, the Yankees also encountered some defensive slipups. When Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned from an oblique strain earlier this month, the Yankees had an infield dilemma. Rather than putting him back at second base and moving DJ LeMahieu to third, the Yankees asked Chisholm to go across the diamond due to his speed. Advertisement Nevertheless, on Tuesday night in the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Angels in The Bronx, the Bombers saw two costly plays from each of them. If a pattern emerges, especially with a struggling lineup, the decision could be put into question. Additionally, it could pose the question as to whether or not the Yankees look around for a solution before the trade deadline. Advertisement In the top of the second inning, the Angels' Luis Rengifo singled on a ground ball to LeMahieu, who was unable to keep the ball in front of him as it slid under his glove and into right field. The miscue knocked in Logan O'Hoppe for an early 1-0 lead. Jazz Chisholm is unable to throw out Nolan Schanuel on a bunt single in the third inning of the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Angels on June 17, 2025. Brad Penner-Imagn Images An inning later, with the bases loaded, Chisholm missed a ground ball that hit the edge of his glove, giving Taylor Ward a two-run single as Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel scored to extend the Angels lead. Advertisement Following the tough innings, Will Warren went on to retire 11 straight batters, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn't seem concerned about the defensive gaffes. DJ LeMahieu, who made a defensive miscue earlier in the game, walks to the dugout after striking out in the eighth inning of the Yankees' loss to the Angels. Bill Kostroun for New York Post He thought LeMahieu nearly had it. 'He got to it, had a chance, it's gonna be a really good play,' Boone said after the Yankees were shut out a third straight game. 'I felt like he kinda secured it too and then it just kinda squibbed off his glove. So, obviously a tough chance. One that he almost got to and made. So, you know, touch chance.' Advertisement Chisholm did not answer questions following the game, telling the media he lost his voice. The one-time All-Star from the Bahamas moved from second base to the outfield while playing for the Marlins. After joining the Yankees in July 2024, he accepted the third base role with his new team. He thought that would be the end of his time playing third base. Nevertheless, prior to leaving his rehab assignment, he was told by the Yankees they would need him in the role yet again. LeMahieu has primarily played third base in more recent years of his career, but three of his four Gold Glove wins came from playing second for the Rockies in 2014, 2017, and 2018.

Adam Silver makes revealing statement on Celtics ownership transition

The Celtics record-breaking $6.1 billion sale to a group led by Bill Chisholm is set to be voted on by the NBA Board of Governors later this month. Chisholm finalized the funding for his Boston ownership group last month with Robert Hale, Bruce A. Beal Jr. and Sixth Street among the known investors in the group. Chisholm's group will take a controlling stake in the franchise in the first part of a two-part sale with 51 percent of the sale occurring this summer and with the remainder closing in 2028. Advertisement The unique arrangement led to some discussion about whether that type of two-part sale would be approved by the league after a tumultuous staged ownership transfer by the Minnesota Timberwolves over the last two years. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said back in March that the league was still digesting the transaction. However, any concerns from a league perspective about the structure of the Celtics deal was put to rest this week when Silver was asked about the looming transaction and how it compares to the Wolves sale before the Game 1 of the NBA Finals. I'd just say that the Boston Celtics deal I don't think of as a staged deal,' Silver said. 'They're still in the process of completing it. It's really more about a phase-out of current ownership. I think there Bill Chisholm, who is the incoming owner, he's got to sort of straighten out some affairs in his life and his business. He's currently located on the West Coast. I think he's a huge admirer of Wyc Grousbeck and the way he's been running that team. Obviously their results speak for themselves.' Grousbeck is expected to remain team governor of the Celtics through 2028 as he keeps an ownership stake in the team before Chisholm takes full control. Advertisement 'What he's working out with Wyc is an opportunity for him, as I said, to learn the business from Wyc, then step in as the principal owner, the Governor of the team,' Silver added. 'There would then be no switching going forward. 'I think in the situation in Minnesota, yes, as I said before, I mean, it's not ideal to have those kinds of staged transactions. But also you learn it's nice to state these principles, but there we were in the middle of a pandemic, and Glen Taylor was in the process of selling his team. We all agreed to something that seemed to make sense in the moment.' The NBA Board of Governors will vote to give approval on the Celtics sale after the NBA Finals concludes. Army Corp dedicates new survey vessels to Georgia soldiers killed in action

The Brief The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District dedicated three new survey vessels named after Georgia soldiers killed in action, honoring their service during a ceremony on June 12. The vessels—Wright, Chisholm, and Beale—will support dredging, surveying, and navigation efforts across Savannah Harbor, Brunswick Harbor, and the Georgia coast. Family members of the fallen soldiers attended the emotional christening, with tributes from Corps leadership and a color guard from one honoree's former high school. SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District held a solemn ceremony Thursday to dedicate three new hydrographic survey vessels in honor of Georgia soldiers who lost their lives in combat. The June 12 event, held at the district's Engineers Depot in Savannah, drew more than 160 guests in person and online. Each vessel now bears the name of a fallen hero: the 30-foot Wright, named after Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright of Lyons; the 27-foot Chisholm, honoring Sgt. Tyrone Lanard Chisholm of Savannah; and the 23-foot Beale, for Sgt. 1st Class John C. Beale of Riverdale. "These vessels will carry the names and memories of three remarkable soldiers as they support the vital missions of this district," said Col. Ron Sturgeon, Savannah District Commander. "Their stories, their sacrifices, and their service will remain with us." The vessels are designed to conduct hydrographic surveys, aid dredging operations, detect submerged hazards, and ferry personnel and gear across critical water infrastructure. They will serve in the Savannah and Brunswick harbors and along the Georgia section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The ceremony featured a presentation of colors by Groves High School's JROTC, Chisholm's alma mater, and a blessing and christening delivered by USACE Command Chaplain Col. J.R. Lorenzen—part of a longstanding maritime tradition that marks the beginning of a vessel's service. Family members of the soldiers attended, including Christal Beale, who described the tribute to her late husband as deeply moving. "It was beautiful, heartwarming, and meaningful," she said. "Seeing the other families there was a reminder of the bonds we share, and how we continue to carry their legacy." Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright, 29, served as a Special Forces engineer with the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Fort Bragg. He was killed during a mission in Niger on Oct. 4, 2017, while assisting local military forces. Wright was a native of Lyons. Sgt. Tyrone Chisholm, 27, was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson. He died Nov. 11, 2005, while serving as a tank gunner in Tal Afar, Iraq, during combat patrols. Chisholm was a native of Savannah. Sgt. 1st Class John C. Beale, 39, served with the Georgia Army National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade. He was killed June 4, 2009, in an attack in Afghanistan while supporting the development of Afghan security forces. Beale was a native of Calhoun. "These boats are more than just tools," said Col. Sturgeon. "They are living memorials to the brave men who gave their all."
