Chinese Media Issues Trump-Iran Tensions Warning—'Sliding Into the Abyss'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Chinese state media is warning U.S. President Donald Trump to wade carefully into the Iran-Israel conflict, writing in a new editorial that stoked tensions could trigger an aftermath that makes the previous Iraq and Afghanistan wars pale in comparison. Why It Matters White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Trump, who has called for Iran's "unconditional surrender," is weighing U.S. military involvement in the Middle East over the next two weeks. Indeterminate numbers of casualties have occurred in both Iran and Israel, though Israel's intentions to destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities may require U.S. artillery aid in the form of multi-ton bunker buster bombs. What To Know Whether or not the U.S. employs its precision-guided "bunker buster" bombs, the nation's direct involvement in the region "will leave a complicated aftermath that might take it longer than the Iraq War or the Afghanistan War to deal with," reads the editorial by China Daily, an English-language daily newspaper owned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). "The international community, especially influential major countries, should uphold a fair position and a responsible attitude to create the necessary conditions for promoting a ceasefire and returning to dialogue and negotiation so as to prevent the regional situation from sliding into the abyss and triggering a greater disaster," the editorial published on Friday reads. TINGSHU WANG/POOL/AFP via Getty Images Rajan Menon, a senior research scholar at the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies and professor at City College of New York, told Newsweek on Friday that China "has come out squarely" against Israeli attacks and been especially critical of Israel's targeting of Iran's nuclear infrastructure. "Yet it has also offered its services as mediator," Menon said. "In 2023, Beijing brokered a rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia and has now once again presented itself as a peacemaker. "This, in part, reflects its increasing ambitions to project political influence worldwide but, in this instance, also to highlight a constraint between itself and the Trump administration, which it has painted as bent on increasing the likelihood of a wider conflict. "That said, I would be surprised to see this war end with a China-mediated deal." The editorial also questions whether Israel and/or the U.S. would be "held responsible" for war escalation, or more serious consequences emanating from a potential nuclear leak triggered by bombs. "It is partly through projecting his administration as a peacemaker and accusing his predecessor of being the opposite that Trump won the presidential election in the U.S. in November," the editorial continues. "Yet people's hopes that he can fulfill his promise of ending both the Gaza and Ukraine crises have yet to be fulfilled. "With the Israeli leader relentlessly trying to convince the U.S. that its interests overlap with Israel's in the Middle East, the U.S. president should be clearheaded that the U.S.' direct participation in a conflict between Israel and Iran might prove to be the tail wagging the dog." Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed deep concern for the unfolding situation, saying during a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the China-Central Asia Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, that escalation is "not in the common interest of the international community." "We oppose any act that infringes upon the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of other countries," Xi said. Also on Thursday, Xi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin specifically about the Middle East conflict. Xi reportedly laid out a four-point proposal with the following intentions: a ceasefire must be an urgent priority; ensuring civilian safety as a top priority; employing dialogue and negotiation as fundamental solutions; and utilizing the "indispensable peacemaking efforts" of the international community, according to Global Times, a daily Chinese tabloid under the CCP's flagship newspaper, People's Daily. Along with the announcement of a dozen cooperation agreements spanning green mining, trade, connectivity, personnel exchanges, and customs, Xi also called on Central Asian countries to deepen cooperation under China's "Belt and Road" infrastructure initiative. What People Are Saying Eric Olander, editor-in-chief of the China-Global South Project (CGSP): "This conflict—China came out very quickly and did not pretend to try and be a neutral arbiter, did not pretend to be kind of nonpartisan at all. They came out very quickly, backed Iran in this, framed the Israelis as the aggressor, and then also positioned the United States as manipulating all of this, which is par for the course in a lot of these types of incidents." President Donald Trump earlier this week wrote on Truth Social: "We know exactly where the so-called 'Supreme Leader' is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there - We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a national address, in part: "We warn America of the consequences of engaging in war, because it will suffer severe damage if it decides to do so. War is met with war, bombing with bombing, and strike with strike." What Happens Next Russia has discouraged the U.S. from direct involvement in the Middle East, saying it would spark a wider regional conflict.

Leaders of China, New Zealand discuss trade, Pacific security

Chinese President Xi Jinping and New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon shake hands at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China June 20, 2025. China Daily via REUTERS BEIJING/SYDNEY - The leaders of China and New Zealand discussed on Friday the role of trade in boosting ties, while New Zealand also pressed its interests for peace and security in the Pacific, government statements showed. President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met in the capital's Great Hall of the People as China's influence grows in the Pacific, challenging the traditionally stronger security foothold many Western nations have had there. On his first visit to China since taking office in November 2023, Luxon discussed the need for stability, less tension in the Indo-Pacific and New Zealand's "enduring support for Pacific-led priorities", his government said in a statement. Luxon's meeting with the leader of New Zealand's biggest trade partner was "constructive", he said in a post on X. "We discussed the depth of the New Zealand-China relationship - from trade and people-to-people ties to our shared global responsibilities," he said. "In a complex world, open dialogue is more important than ever." The remarks came after New Zealand aired concerns this year when Cook Islands, with which it has constitutional ties, signed pacts with China without first consulting it, including one for cooperation on the economy, infrastructure and seabed mining. Luxon also backed up the role of the Pacific Islands Forum, an inter-government body seeking to foster cooperation among Oceanic countries and territories. Without making specific reference to any issue, Xi called for both countries to seek common ground and view differences "accurately", state news agency Xinhua said. "There are no historical grudges or conflicts of interest between China and New Zealand, so we should respect each other, seek common ground," Xi told Luxon, it said, adding that both must accurately look at and tackle disagreements. During his four-day visit to the commercial hub of Shanghai and the capital, Beijing, Luxon has championed an agenda of boosting business, travel and education for New Zealand. MORE BUSINESS Xi also talked about deepening trade and investment ties, as well as scope to work on science and technology, climate change response and infrastructure along with education exchanges - echoing most of Luxon's goals. Luxon documented his meetings on Instagram, posting video messages to fellow citizens reinforcing his mission of getting "money into your back pocket". He clinched travel-related pacts and pushed New Zealand's tertiary education as well as its exports of meat, a key item of trade with China after dairy. Its exports to China were NZ$20.85 billion ($12.51 billion) in 2024, comprising goods worth NZ$17.75 billion and services of NZ$3.1 billion, the foreign ministry said on its website. Chinese tourists are New Zealand's third-largest group of international visitors, though official data show their numbers are still nearly a fifth lower than in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. China Eastern Airlines will launch more flights with New Zealand from December, the New Zealand government said on Wednesday. Days before the visit, New Zealand unveiled a 12-month trial of visa waivers from November for Chinese passport holders arriving from Australia with valid visas from its neighbour. Arabian Travel Market underscores the vital role of Asia Pacific in the future of tourism

Outbound travel from the Asia Pacific region (APAC) is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7% through 2029 Digital platforms and popular culture are driving travel behaviour Localisation is key to attracting travellers from APAC, with destinations like Dubai and Saudi Arabia adopting market-specific strategies Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is poised for significant tourism growth, with spending on international travel forecast to hit US$2.5 trillion and domestic travel to reach US$4.3 trillion by 2029, according to the latest data from Euromonitor International. Outbound travel from APAC is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7%, with intra-regional journeys expected to account for 61% of all trips by the end of 2025. By 2029, one in three trips is anticipated to be outside the APAC region, with 75% of bookings set to be made online. A high-impact panel discussion at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), brought together top industry minds to explore the future of travel in the APAC region. Moderated by Mingie Wang, Chief Correspondent at China Daily, the panel discussed traveller behaviour, digital transformation, and the resurgence of outbound travel, particularly from China, providing fascinating insights into this key global market. Panelists included Alhasan Aldabbagh, President of APAC Markets, Saudi Tourism Authority; Gary Bowerman, Founder of Check-in Asia; Boon Sian Chai, Managing Director and Vice President of International Markets at Group; and Shahab Shayan, Regional Director Asia Pacific at Department of Economy and Tourism. During the session they highlighted a shift in purchasing decisions across the APAC region, driven by experiential travel, digitalisation, and a growing desire for cultural immersion. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: 'More than 60% of travellers are booking trips around concerts and sporting events, while over 40% are influenced by digital platforms such as TikTok. Interestingly, film and television are also playing a significant role, evidenced by a rise in bookings to Thailand following the popularity of The White Lotus.' According to a recent report compiled by Tourism Economics on behalf of ATM, tourism nights from Asia Pacific and Africa are on track to more than double between 2025 and 2030. The number of tourism nights, specifically from China to the Middle East, is expected to grow by 189% through 2030, and APAC source markets are set to account for the largest share of business nights in the region, with India, in particular, gaining importance. In addition, travellers from APAC record the highest spend per person per day globally, at a rate of US$300, across various tourism sectors, including accommodation, food and beverage, and retail. This high level of expenditure is mainly driven by Chinese travellers whose strong purchasing power continues to shape global travel trends. The Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, is key to ensuring the emirate's strategic success in APAC markets, with a focus on market segmentation and storytelling. By tailoring messaging for platforms such as the video-sharing website Bilibili and the social networking and e-commerce platform Red Note, and leveraging strong air links through carriers like Emirates and flydubai, Dubai's tourism authorities continue to position the city as a relevant, accessible, and aspirational destination for travellers across Asia. As a newcomer to APAC tourism markets, Saudi Arabia has adopted a highly localised approach, as outlined during the discussion. Recognising the diversity of the region, which comprises 49 distinct countries, tourism authorities in the Kingdom study each source market closely, from dietary preferences to cultural nuances, tailoring travel experiences accordingly. This strategy is supported by partnerships with media, trade, and research bodies to ensure that Saudi Arabia's offerings resonate authentically with travellers across the region. Curtis added: 'Technology is playing an increasingly pivotal role in travel decision-making across the APAC region, with consumers relying heavily on digital tools, social media, and AI. Mobile-first planning is transforming how travellers research and book trips, although the digital landscape varies significantly from country to country. One constant across the region is the importance of trust, particularly in peer-generated content, which continues to influence traveller choices at every stage of the journey.' Panellists also cited sustainability as a key consideration for younger generations in the APAC region, with research from indicating that 30-40% of Gen Y and millennial travellers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly travel. For these consumers, sustainability extends beyond carbon offsets and environmental protection, encompassing support for local culture and heritage.
