Chevy Starts Building Its Cheap EV This Year, But Another One Is On The Way

2027 Chevy Bolt Will Enter Production Later This Year In April 2023, General Motors announced that it was ending production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, bringing an end to one of the most affordable EVs ever offered in America. GM CEO Mary Barra hinted at the return of the Bolt on the Ultium platform a couple of months later, and then it was made official in June of that year. We've since learned that the second-generation Bolt will debut in 2025, and now GM has announced that production is scheduled to begin later this year for the 2027 model year. With shifting EV demand and changing legislation, it was unclear if the Bolt would still arrive this year, so this is good news. Better still, Chevy has another affordable EV in the works. Cheap EVs From Big Investments The news comes as part of an announcement in which GM has committed roughly $4 billion to three factories over the next two years. These factories will support both combustion and electric vehicle production, and the one we're most interested in is the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas. This is where the 2027 Bolt (likely a subcompact crossover like the old EUV) will enter production by the end of this year, which should help keep its cost of entry low. Chevy's press release didn't say what price it was aiming for, but the old one started under $28,000. This new generation will likely be taller and a little bigger, but we still expect it to cost around $30k. It all depends on where Chevy intends to position it relative to another 'affordable EV' that is scheduled to enter production sometime in mid-2027 – details unknown. Alongside the Kansas plant, GM will also upgrade its facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where the XT5 SUV is being built. It's also the site of Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq production, so it's capable of handling gas and electric cars. The remaining plant is the Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan, Detroit, which was initially meant to begin producing the Silverado EV and its GMC Sierra EV sibling late last year. With the EV landscape still somewhat uncertain, those plans have been delayed to later this year, with the Michigan plant now instead set to produce gas-powered light-duty pickups and full-size SUVs in early 2027. As for the electric pickups that were supposed to be built here, they will get a dedicated site at GM's Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck facility, where the Escalade IQ and Hummer EV will join them. GM is clearly hedging its bets and preparing to build as many strong-selling cars as possible within U.S. borders in an effort to be prepared for whatever comes next, and if EVs see an uptick, it should be ready to change tack. Next-Generation Chevy Bolt Will Enter Production Later This Year

General Motors announced a new investment in three U.S. factories, revealing that production of the next-generation 2027 Chevy Bolt will begin later this year. GM will begin assembling the gas-powered Chevy Blazer at its plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, in 2027, suggesting the aging mid-size SUV will receive a new generation. The automaker also hinted at another next-generation affordable EV to be built alongside the Bolt in Kansas City, Kansas. Back in 2023, as General Motors wound down production of the first-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, the automaker said a second generation of its affordable electric car was coming in 2025. There has been surprisingly little news since, but now we finally have an idea of when to expect the new Bolt. In an announcement about new investments in three U.S. factories, GM said the next-generation Bolt will arrive for the 2027 model year. GM said it will invest roughly $4 billion into three factories over the next two years, expanding the production of both gas-powered and electric vehicles in the United States. One of the facilities receiving an upgrade will be the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, which GM says will begin producing the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV by the end of this year. General Motors No other details were provided about this next iteration of the Bolt, but we expect it to continue as a tall subcompact hatchback, although it could be positioned as a subcompact SUV like the previous generation's EUV model. The timing seems a bit strange, since a 2027-model-year car wouldn't typically go on sale until roughly halfway through 2026. Regardless, this means we should get a full reveal of this next-generation Bolt in the next several months. The Bolt isn't the only new model being added to Fairfax's to-do list. The gas-powered Equinox SUV is currently built at GM's San Luis Potosí factory in Mexico, but the automaker will supplement existing production by assembling the Equinox at Fairfax starting in mid-2027. GM also said it plans to make further investments in the Fairfax facility to produce a next-generation "affordable EV." It's unclear exactly how this EV will be positioned relative to the Bolt, which we expect to remain priced around the $30,000 mark. Michael Simari | Car and Driver There was another surprise tied in with GM's investments. The company's factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee, currently builds the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq EVs along with the gas-powered XT5 SUV, but GM now says it will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer SUV to the facility in 2027. This is a bit unexpected, as a report earlier this year claimed the mid-size Blazer would be discontinued following the 2025 model year and wasn't expected to receive a follow-up act. Given that the current Blazer—built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico—has been around since 2019 with minimal changes, we expect these production plans to apply to a next-generation model. The final plant receiving new investment is the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan. The Orion factory was originally supposed to start producing the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV in late 2024, but that plan was delayed to late 2025. Now, however, GM will use the plant for the production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks starting in early 2027. It seems that Orion Assembly won't be churning out those EVs after all. GM said that Factory Zero at its Detroit-Hamtramck facility in Michigan will be the dedicated site for production of the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, as well as its Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC Hummer EV cousins. This change implies a shift in priorities, as sales of those electric behemoths haven't quite taken off as planned, and demand for its gas-powered full-size SUVs and trucks remains strong. The move also shows a desire from GM to bring production of some of its bestselling and most profitable models, some of which are currently built in Mexico and Canada, into the United States. How dark is too dark for car window tint in Tennessee?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A rideshare driver was recently cited in Campbell County for having illegal window tint on his car. In Tennessee and Kentucky, window tints on frontside windows must allow more than 35% light in. The term is called visible light transmission, or VLT. 35% is considered a medium tint, neither too dark nor too light. This is the tint most police officers in Tennessee will overlook and not issue a citation, but they may cite you if your windows are too dark. Aaron Campbell is an Uber and Lyft driver. As a single dad and student, he depends on a good running car for his livelihood. It was last month when he bought this 2022 Chevy Bolt from a local dealer. 'It could be months' Child hit by car in Knoxville begins long recovery process Around two weeks after buying the used car, he was given a citation. His driver's side window was too dark. It happened as Tennessee Highway Patrol officers operated a check on 25W in LaFollette on April 4. The ticket did not include a fine, as the patrol office explained the violation to Campbell. The citation said window tinted, frontside, 25%. Tinted front side windows in Tennessee must allow 35% light. 'I said to the trooper that I wasn't aware that the car was in any sort of violation,' Campbell said. 'He didn't say anything like that, he just gave me the citation,' Campbell said when asked if the trooper told him it was an issue he should have been aware of. 'And told me if I got it fixed before the court date on May 15th that the ticket would be dismissed.' Jim Clayton: 'A great science museum is in our future' On a window tint charts that can be found at window tint businesses are various shades of gray and different numbers representing Visible Light Transmittance, as Cameron Clamon of 865 Tint explains. 'The lower the number the darker the shade, so the less light come through. If you went to five that would mean five percent of light comes through,' he explained. Campbell's window was 25%. It was too dark for a law officer to see inside. The percentage of solar tint can be found on the windows of most cars. Aaron plans to have the dark window film removed from his car. 'As an Uber driver and as a Lyft driver, they do periodic background checks. This is a Class B misdemeanor,' Campbell said. It doesn't take to long to scrape off darker window film. Aaron intends to have it done as soon as possible. Clamon told us window tint laws vary significantly by state, with some states having stricter regulations than others. ▶ See more top stories on Frontside windows for cars in Tennessee is 35 percent VLT. Tesla announces big change that will affect the cost of its vehicles in major market: 'I think we are at a really good point'

Tesla is aiming to deliver some good news for Australians considering an electric vehicle. A recent statement from Tesla Australia indicated more stable pricing could be coming to Australia and New Zealand. Tesla's current pricing strategy in Australia is based on demand, which can see prices rise or fall thousands of dollars overnight, but senior Tesla executive Thom Drew suggested Tesla is dropping demand pricing for something more stable. "I know we have famously been known for changing our prices rapidly over the past several years," Drew told Chasing Cars. "I really think we have gotten to a point with our pricing where it is where it should be. Once we release the general production pricing for Model Y, I think we are at a really good point." Although 2024 set a record for EV sales in Australia, 2025 is off to a slow start for Tesla in the country, with reports of a 53% drop in sales. Most analysts have attributed that drop in Australia and elsewhere around the world to competition from rival brands and CEO Elon Musk's political statements, but rapidly changing prices can dissuade potential buyers from committing to a purchase too. It's especially difficult to justify an expensive purchase when the price could unexpectedly drop thousands of dollars by the next morning. In other moments, it can be frustrating for a prospective buyer to see the price drop but be unable to make time for a purchase before the price goes back up, in contrast to a sales event lasting longer. Another potential cause for Tesla's pricing switch is "rising competition from China's low-cost EVs," according to Not A Tesla App. "Tesla may be avoiding a race to the bottom, where Tesla and Chinese competitors get into an intense price war, and margins become razor thin." If your priority is saving money, though, consider making your next car an EV. While EVs tend to cost a bit more upfront, EV drivers can save hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on gasoline and maintenance costs (no oil changes plus fewer individual parts that can go bad), and the Department of Energy's new savings tool can help calculate exactly how much you'd save on gas. Purchasing an EV has never been cheaper, either. The average price for an electric car is $55,000, compared to a gas-powered car at $48,000, and models such as the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf can be bought new for under $30,000. Moreover, used EV sales have been picking up steam lately, especially with reports of many Tesla drivers looking to sell at lower prices than ever before. As technology advances and production increases, EVs are closing the gap, and if you use available incentives, like the Inflation Reduction Act, you can take several thousand dollars off the price point. They're not just good for your wallet — EVs are better for the planet, too. Unlike their gas-powered counterparts, EVs produce no tailpipe pollution, making them a much better choice for the environment. Even when accounting for charging and production pollution, EV emissions are still more sustainable than gas cars — with MIT reporting that the average EV is responsible for about half as many grams of carbon dioxide pollution per mile than a gas car. If you were going to purchase an EV, which of these factors would be most important to you? Cost Battery range Power and speed The way it looks Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Tesla has been losing its share of the market in Australia, but Drew believes Tesla's stable pricing will keep Tesla on top. "We need to make sure we are hyper-focused on the quality of our products and our competitiveness," Drew said, per Chasing Cars. "[We need to] be looking around today and making sure that we have the best ownership experience to keep our brand at the number-one point."
