How a vacant Boston school was transformed into thriving housing for LGBTQ+ seniors

An old school building in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood, once vacant and 'creepy,' is now buzzing with life while teaching new lessons in community and inclusion. Exactly one year after opening its doors, The Pryde has transformed the historic 1902 structure into New England's first LGBTQ+ welcoming affordable senior housing community. Karmen Cheung, Pennrose New England Regional VP, recalled the building's previous state. 'I remember walking in and doing a tour of the building when it was vacant for the first time,' Cheung said. 'It was actually kind of creepy, cold, dark.' The vision, however, was clear: to turn an historic building into an independent living space where LGBTQ+ seniors could feel a strong sense of belonging. The result is a vibrant community that residents like Brian Salvaggio deeply appreciate. 'It's bright, it's open, it's lively,' Salvaggio said. 'It's really the first group of people that's lived here, so you feel part of something.' For many residents, The Pryde offers a much-needed haven. 'As we get older and we want more community around us and we want more support around us, that's really what brought us here,' resident Pat Xavier said. The 100% accessible building addresses a critical need for a generation of LGBTQ+ elders who grew up without the legal protections and societal acceptance now afforded to younger generations, according to Gretchen Van Ness, executive director of LGBTQ Senior Housing. 'This generation of LGBTQ elders has faced such losses that they come into their elder years with a much smaller safety net than a lot of other folks are lucky to have,' Van Ness said. The journey to create The Pryde was a dedicated nine-and-a-half-year collaboration between LGBTQ Senior Housing and Pennrose Management. Throughout the renovation, developers diligently preserved the building's historic charm, retaining elements like original chalkboards and bell systems. 'Every unit is actually a little different because of those historic pieces,' Cheung said. The Pryde is open to anyone over 62 who qualifies for affordable housing, though demand has far outstripped availability. 'We are 100% occupied,' Van Ness said. 'This community is full and it's hopping and there's a million things going on.' For residents, the most significant impact is the feeling of safety and liberation from discrimination and isolation. 'That's just a wonderful feeling because, you know, there's no more hiding,' Brian Salvaggio said. 'Not at our age. We want to be who we are and enjoy the time we have.'

White House mocks Newsom address, accuses governor of hiring Harris', Biden's campaign manager

The White House took several jabs at California Gov. Gavin Newsom's address to the nation on Tuesday night as his state navigates massive immigration protests in Los Angeles. Newsom, a Democrat, said in the address that "Democracy is under assault" as he sparred with President Donald Trump over the administration's decision to dispatch thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines to address the riots. In response, White House assistant to the president and director of communications Steven Cheung accused Newsom of spending time creating the video rather than serving as governor. Likewise, Cheung took a swipe at the video's audio, claiming the production quality was akin to Newsom's leadership. "Gavin NewScum spent all this time--instead of doing his actual job-- preparing for a webinar just for the audio to not work," Cheung said in a post on X late Tuesday evening. "The production quality is just like his leadership quality-- sh***y." Additionally, Cheung suggested that Newsom had brought on former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign manager, who both repeatedly warned during the 2024 campaign cycle that a second Trump term would pose a "threat to democracy." "NewScum must've hired Kamala and Biden's loser campaign team because he saying this is a 'threat to democracy,'" Cheung said. A spokesperson for Newsom did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. Other White House officials also weighed in on Newsom's address to defend the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration. "American voters elected President Donald Trump to carry out his agenda, which includes enforcing the immigration laws passed by their elected representatives," deputy assistant to the president and principal deputy communications director Alex Pfieffer said in a post on X on Tuesday. "California is trying to subvert democracy." Newsom said in the address that more than 200 people have been arrested in connection to the protests and labeled Trump's decision to deploy troops to Los Angeles a "brazen abuse of power." "This isn't just about protests here in Los Angeles," Newsom said in the video. "This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is under assault before our eyes." White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller also responded to one of Newsom's posts on X late Tuesday evening after the governor said the Founding Fathers did not "live and die to see this moment," and urged for peaceful protests. Meanwhile, Miller shared a photo of a shirtless man standing on a vehicle and waving a California flag in front of fumes with the comment: "According to Governor Newsom, this is what the Founders were fighting for." Trump has gone head-to-head with Newsom over the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles following protests sparked by ICE arrests in the city on Friday. While Trump has argued the National Guard troops are necessary to prevent destruction in Los Angeles, Newsom said most of the troops "are sitting, unused, in federal buildings without orders." Additionally, Newsom argued that the move violates state sovereignty because governors typically oversee National Guard troops. Trump invoked a law to place the troops under federal command in order to bypass Newsom. "This isn't about public safety," Newsom said in a post on X on Monday. "It's about stroking a dangerous President's ego."

SMEs urged to boost their awareness of ESG

SMEs urged to boost their awareness of ESG The Hong Kong Productivity Council says some SMEs neglect the social and governance aspects of ESG. Photo: RTHK The Hong Kong Productivity Council on Wednesday said small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need to be more aware of the environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards used to evaluate a company's sustainability. The council's chief technology officer, Dr Lawrence Cheung, said some SMEs neglect the social and governance aspects of ESG. "Even for the environmental side, a lot of them may not know what kind of standards are available around internationally," he said. "So a lot of them may just feel that they can just put some simple environmental measures and that would achieve a certain level of ESG." Cheung said the council will hold personnel training courses as most SMEs lack the expertise to introduce ESG measures. "Particularly a lot of exporters which are SMEs, more and more their buyers are demanding some sort of ESG elements in their operations," he said. A new AI tool will also be introduced to help SMEs assess their ESG measures and compare their efforts with others in the industry. "If they have some ESG elements particularly on the governance side, it actually gives them a lot more confidence in the eyes of investors, customers as well as the buyers," Cheung said.

With a name like "Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee", this stall at Whampoa Makan Place has a lot to live up to – not to mention it was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand for "good quality" and "good value cooking". Unfortunately, it seems to fall short of expectations, especially if you take a look at the Google reviews. So what went wrong with this plate of hokkien mee? According to a food reviewer, there was an imbalance between the sweet and savoury flavours, and the prawn stock's characteristic brininess was frustratingly faint. There was also a notable lack of wok hei and pork lard was only served upon request. To find out more about the disappointing Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee, read here. Apple's week-long Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicked off on Monday (9 June) with a keynote and here are all the highlights. The announcements aren't that splashy but the biggest one is probably the new iOS 26, which brings with it the largest software design overhaul for Apple since iOS 7 in 2013. All new Apple devices will get a new look dubbed "Liquid Glass" – one that was inspired by the Vision Pro's translucent software display. The new design will feature see-through visuals that appear to have a glossy surface. The new iOS 26 also marks the start of a new OS naming convention for Apple. The name of Apple's operating system typically increases by 1 each year, but it'll now be OS 26 for all of their devices. This brings the naming convention in line with the year in which customers will use it. Apple Intelligence is also getting some updates with the biggest announcement being that it'll open up its on-device AI model to third-party app developers. It'll also use the technology to improve other functions of the phone, such as Apple Maps, which will now remember users' preferred routes and tailor directions for them – which means that your coffee runs will no longer be a detour. However, Apple didn't reveal more on its plans for a more capable, AI-enhanced Siri. This was first announced at last year's WWDC but later indefinitely delayed. Lively had accused Baldoni of sexually harassing her while filming the 2024 movie It Ends With Us, and Baldoni's lawsuit was a response to that. She still seeks unspecified triple and punitive damages, and a March 2026 trial remains scheduled. The judge also dismissed another related $250 million lawsuit from Baldoni against the New York Times for its 21 Dec, 2024 article on their dispute titled "'We Can Bury Anyone': Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine". For more on Justin Baldoni's legal loss and the judge's explanation of the dismissal, read here. A study by the National Institute of Education (NIE) aims to examine how the well-being of girls, who are at greater risk of stress and problematic behaviours, are affected by life in Singapore's top schools. There will be 4,200 secondary school girls recruited from the study. Participants will be recruited from three girls' school and one co-ed school in Singapore. The inclusion of the co-ed school was to recruit a smaller group of boys for comparison, explained the study's lead investigator, Dr Jacqueline Lee Tilley. Researchers have defined a top school as as schools where students consistently perform well in national exams or co-curricular activities. This study is the first of its kind in Singapore and will be conducted over three years, from 2025 to 2028. The four schools were not been named, but The Straits Times understands that Methodist Girls' School is one of them. For more on the NIE study and how it'll be conducted, read here. A Singaporean man was arrested in Johor Bahru on Sunday (8 June) after a road rage incident went viral online. Johor Bahru Utara police chief Balveer Singh told Malaysian media on Monday that the man will remain in remand for four days till 12 June. In an official statement, Singh said, "The suspect does not have a criminal record and tested negative for drugs." Facebook user Vicky Sing, who said she was involved in the incident with her boyfriend, uploaded short clips of the encounter to her account. One of them showed the Singaporean driver shouting at what seems to be her boyfriend. There were also a clip of the driver kicking her car and another showing the damage to the car. A police report was made by the couple on Saturday afternoon, shortly after the incident occurred at around 2.39pm. The case will be investigated under Section 426 of the Penal Code, for mischief and damaging property and Section 509 of the Penal Code, for insult of modesty.
