England fans are left worried Jofra Archer is injured AGAIN ahead of his red ball return - before national side step in to clarify bizarre Sussex move

Jofra Archer will make his long-awaited red-ball return on Sunday – not that his county wanted anyone to know. Sussex on Saturday named a 12-man squad for their County Championship match in Durham, with Archer mysteriously missing from the list. Given England selector Luke Wright had said earlier this month that the pace bowler was set to make his comeback from injury at Chester-le-Street, there were fears he had broken down again. However, England chiefs quickly clarified that the squad Sussex published on their website was wrong – and that Archer will indeed don whites for the first time in four years today. Mail Sport understands Sussex had bizarrely left the 2019 World Cup winner off their list because they were trying to avoid extra media attention on his return. The 30-year-old has not played any first-class cricket since Sussex's County Championship clash with Kent in May 2021, a match he did not finish after injuring his right elbow. Archer's last Test came in India earlier that year, while he has not featured in a home England Test since 2020. The Barbados-born star most recently played competitive cricket for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in May, but his tournament was cut short after he suffered a thumb injury. If Archer comes through this County Championship match unscathed, he could be available for England's second Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on July 2. England are desperate to have Archer back fit ahead of this winter's Ashes, especially with the limitations of their current pace attack being exposed in India's first innings of the series at Headingley.

Archer set for red-ball return with Sussex

Fast bowler Jofra Archer is in Sussex's squad to play Durham in the County Championship on Sunday, putting him in line for a long-awaited return to red-ball 30, has not played a first-class match for more than four years after a series of injuries, most notably to his right elbow and has returned to the international fold in white-ball cricket but an appearance in the Division One fixture at Chester-le-Street would be a significant step, which England hope will lead to him playing Test cricket this selector Luke Wright said earlier this month that if Archer comes through the four days for Sussex he could be available for the second Test against India, which starts on 2 July at Edgbaston. Having bowled the decisive super over in the World Cup final earlier that summer, Archer made a thrilling start to his Test career during the 2019 Ashes and was viewed as a generational took 22 wickets at 20.27 across four Tests and bowled an electric spell to Steve Smith at Lord's, which resulted in the Australia batter retiring hurt after being hit in the played a further nine Tests but has not featured in whites for England since the third Test in India in struggled with an issue in his right elbow on that tour and stress fractures in the joint have required multiple surgeries. He also suffered a stress fracture to his back in has not played any red-ball cricket since a County Championship match for Sussex against Kent in May missed the recent T20 and 50-over matches against West Indies with a minor thumb injury but he has otherwise come through 12 months of white-ball cricket unscathed, having returned for last year's T20 World Cup and featured at the Champions Trophy earlier this have painstakingly managed his schedule over the past 12 months in the hope Archer, who can still reach speeds above 90mph, could yet play a significant role against India and then Australia in the Ashes this this week, Test captain Ben Stokes revealed Archer texted him about the possibility of playing in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge but instead, while Stokes' side play India in the first Test at Headingley, an eye will be kept on Archer when he does return in the north east.

England's Dawson relishing return from international wilderness

England's Liam Dawson (C) celebrates with team-mates after dismissing West Indies' Johnson Charles during the 1st T20 at Chester-le-Street (Oli SCARFF) Liam Dawson is determined to make the most of his surprise recall to international duty after believing his England career had come to an end. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner had won just 20 caps across all three formats since making his debut in 2016. Advertisement He appeared surplus to requirements as England selected a succession of other slow bowlers in red and white-ball cricket, many of whom had inferior county records to Hampshire mainstay Dawson. But he produced a reminder of his quality with 4-20 and a player-of-the-match award as England marked Harry Brook's first T20 as captain with a 21-run win over the West Indies at Chester-le-Street on Friday. "I had got to an age where I probably thought international cricket was gone," said Dawson after taking his best figures in T20 internationals. "In my domestic career, I've tried to go out there and just enjoy playing for whoever I'm playing for. It was about going out there and not worrying about playing for England. Advertisement "I think that can hamper you sometimes so I've not really worried about that. I'm at an age now where I know that I'm close to finishing." Brook gave Dawson the new ball in Durham, a sign of his confidence in the bowler, and perhaps a marker for next year's T20 World Cup on turning pitches in India and Sri Lanka. "Personally, I think he's been knocking on the door for years to try and solidify that spot and the performance we saw from him was awesome," said Brook of Dawson. "Him and Adil Rashid working in tandem at both ends is going be good to watch in the coming years. He can also help the younger lads along the way, to have him in the inner circle when they are bowling is going to help us a lot." Advertisement The three-match series continues in Bristol on Sunday before finishing at Dawson's home ground in Southampton on Tuesday. Well though he bowled in Durham, Dawson is taking nothing for granted. "I know how cricket works, you've got to be consistent and it's only one game," he said. "So I'll park this and go again. It would be nice to play at my home ground, if selected." jdg/pb
