Costain to design hydrogen storage facility in Cheshire, UK
Infrastructure solutions company Costain is set to undertake the design for the Keuper Gas Storage Project (KGSP), an underground hydrogen storage facility in Northwich, Cheshire, UK. Costain has been contracted by gas storage developer Storengy UK, which said that the work of the infrastructure specialist will guide its final investment decision on the project. The facility will comprise 19 salt caverns and associated hydrogen treatment and transfer facilities. It is set to store around 400 million cubic metres (mcm) of hydrogen. Storengy UK hydrogen director Paul Snary said: 'The Keuper Gas Storage Project is a key initiative which, as part of the wider HyNet system, will help decarbonise both industry and energy generation in the Northwest of England and beyond.' 'This is a long-term project involving many local and regional stakeholders, and we're looking forward to drawing on Costain's expertise and long track record in this space to ensure the engineering and constructability designs meet the requirements, before progressing towards EPCM [engineering, procurement, and construction management] contracts.' The project's first front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract will explore solution mining techniques to create the storage caverns. This process involves pumping water deep underground to dissolve salt and then extracting the resulting brine solution. The salt solution will then be transported to local customers through existing pipelines. The second FEED will concentrate on the necessary gas storage facilities to integrate with the HyNet system, which is a combination of new and existing hydrogen infrastructure across north-west England and North Wales. Costain's design will address the hydrogen's transportation, compression, and storage within the caverns, as well as its reintegration into the HyNet system. The company's work is slated for completion by 2026. According to Costain, it has a history of nearly two decades on the Holford brinefields and experience in constructing gas storage facilities such as the Stublach solution mining plant. The company has also been actively involved in hydrogen infrastructure for over 60 years. Its portfolio includes advisory and delivery projects on hydrogen usage, storage, and production, including a study for Wales and West Utilities on integrating hydrogen refuelling stations into the UK's gas network. Costain natural resources managing director Sam White said: 'This is an exciting project that will enable a transformative hydrogen storage facility to improve the UK's energy resilience and economic prosperity in the north-west of England. 'We have decades of experience in delivering salt cavern gas storage facilities, and we'll apply this knowledge to the rapidly growing hydrogen economy, designing safe and secure storage systems that will be critical to creating a sustainable future." Last month, Costain secured a contract to design a high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) advanced fuels facility for Urenco. "Costain to design hydrogen storage facility in Cheshire, UK" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand. Fresh warnings over car meets blighting Alderley Edge as police urge 'think again'
Fresh warnings have been issued over car meets blighting Alderley Edge with police urging those participating to 'think again'. It was earlier this year that launched a crackdown on illegal car meets following a number of unauthorised events in Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Alderley Edge, where high-powered vehicles had been 'drag' racing. Hundreds of people are known to usually attend the events in some of Cheshire most affluent areas - but they have previously sparked concern from residents because of the noise of revving engines and parking, with cars mounted pavements, roundabouts and grass verges. READ MORE: Police investigate after man found unresponsive in Stockport READ MORE: Teenagers jailed following violent incident on Salford street Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE The force said that over recent days, officers have been made aware of another unauthorised car meet in Alderley Edge which was planned for this weekend. It has not been approved by the local authority or Cheshire Police. A dispersal order was put in place across Alderley Edge in March this year, to crack down on the drivers causing a nuisance in the area and potential anti-social behaviour. And senior officers previously told the M.E.N that some motorists involved in car meets across Cheshire and Greater Manchester were 'playing up' and performing dangerous stunts 'for likes on social media'. "Previous events have attracted hundreds of people, many in high powered motor vehicles driving dangerously causing excessive noise and anti-social behaviour, all of which have caused alarm and distress to local residents," a Cheshire Police spokesperson said. Issuing a warning, Chief Inspector Zoe Bowden, head of Macclesfield Local Policing Unit, said: 'We are aware of reports circulating on social media regarding a potential car meet in Alderley Edge this weekend and I would urge anyone planning to attend to think again. 'The event has not been authorised by ourselves, or Cheshire East Council, and therefore it will be classed as an illegal car meet. 'Patrols will be stepped up across the area and robust action against anyone who is found to break the law. 'Our message is clear – anti-social behaviour and anti-social use of vehicles will not be tolerated.' --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life. Molly-Mae Hague lovingly cradles her daughter Bambie, 2, as she takes her to a morning ballet class
Molly-Mae Hague cradled her two-year-old daughter Bambi as she took her to an early morning ballet class on Thursday. The former Love Island star, 26, cut a casual figure in a light yellow T-shirt which she wore with a pair of white tracksuit bottoms. Also wearing a pair of red-tinted sunglasses, the influencer completed her look with a pair of black sandals. Bambi was dressed in an adorable pink top and tutu along with white socks as Molly-Mae took her to class. The star shares her daughter with boxer Tommy Fury who she finished as runner-up with on Love Island in 2019. Molly and Tommy recently reunited after their shock split in August, with a source telling The Sun that they are in the 'honeymoon period again'. After the epic trip to Disneyland Paris, the family were all spotted landing back in the UK via private jet before they drove back to Molly's £4million Cheshire home. The Paris trip marked Molly's seventh holiday of the year having already jetted off to locations including Switzerland, Paris and St. Moritz already in 2025. She also flew to Dubai with Tommy in March with Bambi, and they then recreated the trip with another relaxing UAE voyage shortly after. At the time, Molly referred to the trip as 'the best holiday of her life' after fans were sent wild over whether she and Tommy had reunited. However, Molly was hit by a health scare upon her return from their second Dubai trip as she was rushed to hospital not long after. The Maebe founder said in a recent YouTube video that she was suffering with 'severe pain' in her leg following the long-haul flight and was told to urgently go to A&E to get it checked. Molly said she feared she had a blood clot in her leg after feeling a 'sharp, stabbing pain' in her leg which then moved to her knee and ankle. She called 111, when she started to feel her leg go numb, and was told by a doctor to go straight to hospital. She said: 'Basically yesterday I thought I had a blood clot and half of today I thought I had a blood clot in my leg. 'Obviously flying home from Dubai I was on the plane for like nearly eight hours… I didn't drink like hardly any water. 'I was in so much pain, like it was in the back of my knee, so so strong. Like it didn't feel like a dead leg, it was like a sharp stabbing pain… 'I was in A&E for absolutely hours. It was absolutely packed, it was such a sad environment, so many poorly people.' But after waiting for four hours in A&E for a blood test, Molly had to wait for three more hours for the results to see a doctor. Worried about not getting back to take Bambi to nursery, Molly went back home, but after suffering from dizziness and nausea, went back for a full round of testing. Thankfully, she got the all-clear, adding: 'Like there was nothing that showed them any sort of concern or anything about a blood clot.'

Cheshire gets huge car parts centre the size of NINE FOOTBALL PITCHES creating 200 new jobs in the region
Car giant Stellantis has opened a new vehicle parts distribution centre in Ellesmere Port just months after it closed Vauxhall's van factory in Luton, putting more than 1,100 jobs at risk. The parts centre will become the vehicle component hub for 10 Stellantis-owned brands across the UK and Ireland. It will streamline the company's supply chain, delivering approximately four million parts per year. Of the 240 staff on site, 200 are new jobs for the region. This is on top of the 1,100 people Stellantis already employs in the Cheshire town. The enormous 60,000 square metre warehouse - which is equivalent to the size of nine football pitches - sits adjacent to the company's electric van factory, the first dedicated mass-production site for EVs in Britain since its conversion in 2023. The auto firm invested £100million into the 60-year-old car factory - which previously assembled Astra family hatchbacks - to 'strengthen' its commercial vehicle manufacturing operations in Britain. It comes after Stellantis shuttered the doors of its Luton van factory on 28 March. Some of its 1,100 Bedfordshire workforce were offered roles at Ellesmere instead, which is some 150 miles away. Stellantis UK has opened a new Parts Distribution Centre at Ellesmere Port, after the closure of its Luton van factory in March. It will supply up to four million parts a year Stellantis, which owns Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and Fiat, employs over 5,000 people in the UK and is Britain's biggest van manufacturer. Andy Kite, parts and service director at Stellantis UK, said: 'The opening of our new UK Parts Distribution Centre enables us to enhance our aftersales service. 'Its central location offers improved UK coverage and delivery times, with the ability to deliver parts to repairers for the next working day – ensuring the shortest possible wait time for customers. 'With all our brands under one roof, from long-established names like Vauxhall to newer brands like [Chinese EV newcomer] Leapmotor, Stellantis customers benefit from the reassurance of knowing they can quickly access the parts they need.' The centre employs 243 members of staff - 200 being new jobs - operating over two shifts five days per week, distributing up to 140,000 parts housed in the building and supplying 19 regional hubs. It's size is equivalent to nine football pitches The last Stellantis van rolled off the Luton production line in March marking the end of 120 years of manufacturing Stellantis' decision to shutter Luton's 100-year-old factory put 1,100 jobs at risk. Staff at the Bedfordshire site were offered roles at the Ellesmere Port plant, though this is 150 miles away The opening of the Ellesmere Port parts centre follows the transformation of the nearby vehicle manufacturing plant. The former car factory originally opened in 1964, producing Vauxhall Vivas. But in more recent years became the home of the Astra, with production of Vauxhall-badged models for the UK market and left-hand-drive Opels in mainland Europe. When production of the latest Astra was moved to Germany, the UK car factory was converted into the nation's first EV-only volume manufacturing site in 2023. A year later in November 2024, the company announced it would be closing its 100-year-old Luton van factory to shift all manufacturing to the refurbished Cheshire site. Despite opposing calls with unions dubbing it a 'slap in the face' for the people of Luton, Stellantis pushed ahead with its closure, transferring all van manufacturing - and some staff - to the North West town. The parts distribution centre is the first UK warehouse to achieve outstanding BREEAM accreditation, the world-leading sustainability assessment method for the built environment and infrastructure The enormous 60,000 square metre parts warehouse sits adjacent to the company's electric van factory (pictured), the first dedicated mass-production site for EVs in Britain since its conversion in 2023 The new parts distribution centre is the latest consolidation of Stellantis' EV ambitions in the UK - part of its strategy to globally sell 75 EV models by 2030. In 2024, Stellantis saw a significant increase in battery vehicle sales, particularly in the UK, where it was the leading electric van manufacturer and took 10 per cent of the electric car market. Keeping with this zero emission mindset, Stellantis says the parts centre was designed with sustainability at the forefront. It can harvest up to 7,000 litres of water through a storage tank, there are 32 EV charging points, and LED lighting to lower energy usage. It is the first UK warehouse to achieve outstanding BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) accreditation, the world-leading sustainability assessment method for the built environment and infrastructure.
