A24 Greenlights Kane Parsons' ‘The Backrooms,' with Chiwetel Ejiofor to Star

'The Backrooms,' the viral YouTube horror series that has amassed nearly 200 million views since debuting in 2022, is officially becoming a feature film. A24 has greenlit a movie based on the property directed by 19-year-old series creator Kane Parsons, who will be the youngest director in A24 history when the film enters production this summer. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve will star in 'The Backrooms,' which is a co-production between A24 and Chernin Entertainment. James Wan and Shawn Levy will executive produce through their Atomic Monster and 21 Laps banners, respectively. Roberto Patino is also a producer. Chernin Entertainment, part of The North Road Company, will co-finance alongside A24. More from IndieWire Vicky Krieps Is Possessed by Her Dead Wife in Trailer for Psychological Drama 'Went Up the Hill' Mel Brooks to Return to 'Spaceballs' Sequel as Yogurt While plot details for the film have been kept under wraps, the YouTube series used the found-footage format to gradually build a horror universe about liminal spaces that exist in our world without fully conforming to our reality. The slow builds and homemade special effects helped the eerie videos build a loyal following. A24's feature take on 'The Backrooms,' which was first announced in 2023, has been cited as one of Hollywood's most significant investments in intellectual property that emerged from the internet. In Vol. 005 of the In Development newsletter from IndieWire's Future of Filmmaking, editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Bridson argued that Parsons represents the new archetype for indie film success in the 2020s. 'This sounds like a 21st-century riff on the Sundance wunderkind, but A24 didn't buy a short from a promising high school filmmaker. It bought an ecosystem,' she wrote of his success. 'Scalable IP, with a built-in fanbase. Proof of engagement. Potential for merch, spin-offs, and platform-native storytelling. It's a lot less romantic than the '90s story, in which credit-card debt is burned away by a life-altering festival premiere that sends buyers huddling in the lobby to craft eight-figure offers. However, we can't believe in that folktale if we also believe in the internet. Thirty years ago, a rapturous reception was the only tool distributors had to project future results. In reality, the digital revolution in filmmaking happened at the same time as all the other digital revolutions. Today, no one relies on analog instinct for pretty much the same reason that you don't have a landline.'No release date for 'The Backrooms' has been announced. Apple TV+ has announced a multi-year, first-look feature film deal with North Road Company's Chernin Entertainment, the company behind 'Ford v Ferrari,' 'Planet of the Apes,' 'Hidden Figures,' and 'The Greatest Showman.' Chernin is also producing the Jason Momoa epic miniseries 'Chief of War,' set for release on August 1. 'We've had a great experience working with Apple on the series side, where they've been smart, daring, and always supportive — we're excited to build on that success by making movies together,' North Road Company Chairman Peter Chernin said in a statement. The Age Of Innocence" Limited TV Adaptation in Works

Yara Sameh Netflix has ordered "The Age Of Innocence", a limited series based on Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Emma Frost has penned the adaptation and will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the Chernin Entertainment production. The series was quietly greenlighted earlier this year and has been prepping for a fall start of production in Europe for a couple of months now. A fresh take on Edith Wharton's classic novel of forbidden love in 19th century New York, "The Age Of Innocence" is a will-they/won't-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity, and love in all its forms. The project is clearly geared toward the wide global fanbase of Netflix's hit period romance drama "Bridgerton", also a book adaptation. Frost executive produces with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Tracey Cook of Chernin Entertainment, part of the North Road Company. Wharton's novel was notably adapted by Martin Scorsese in the 1993 Columbia Pictures feature starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, and Miriam Margolyes. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. "Fear Street: Prom Queen" Lands Release Date

Yara Sameh The next installment of Netflix's 'Fear Street' franchise, 'Prom Queen,' will be streaming just in time for prom season on Friday, May 23. The new movie takes the audience back to the cursed city of Shadyside in 1988 and comes nearly four years after Netflix's decades-spanning trilogy of Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666, which released over three weeks in summer 2021. The upcoming teenage horror movie is based on R.L. Stine's 1992 'Fear Street' novel, 'The Prom Queen'. Per the official logline, 'Prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school's wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of '88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.' The cast includes India Fowler ('The Nevers', 'Insomnia'), Suzanna Son ('Red Rocket,' 'The Idol'), Fina Strazza ('Paper Girls,' 'Above the Shadows'), David Iacono ('The Summer I Turned Pretty,' 'Cinnamon'), Ella Rubin ('The Idea of You'), Chris Klein ('Sweet Magnolias,' 'American Pie'), Lili Taylor ('Outer Range,' 'Manhunt'), and Katherine Waterston ('The End We Start From,' 'Perry Mason'). Yvonne Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine will serve as executive producers alongside Caroline Pitofsky, who is overseeing production for Chernin Entertainment. Producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson for Chernin Entertainment. In January 2024, Stine confirmed that a new 'Fear Street' movie was in development at Netflix. 'Movie News: I can finally announce that a new Fear Street movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It's based on my Fear Street book, The Prom Queen. Good news!' Stine said in a social media post. This will be the fourth 'Fear Street' movie at Netflix after the Leigh Janiak-directed 2021 trilogy — 'Fear Street Part One: 1994', 'Fear Street Part Two: 1978', and 'Fear Street Part Three: 1666.' Netflix released one Fear Street movie a week for three weeks in 2021. While the trilogy was inspired by R. L. Stine's "Fear Street: 1994", "Fear Street: 1978", and "Fear Street: 1666", they were not based on any specific books written by Stine. The giant streamer announced back in November 2023 that a standalone Fear Street movie was in the works, and that this time, the movie will be based on a specific book. 'Obviously, there's a lot of books,' Netflix's Head of Film Scott Stuber previously told Collider. 'There's one standalone that we're working on right now that we're once again trying to get the script right, but I like it very much, and so does the team. So I feel like if we can get that script right there would be a great kind of extension of that franchise.'
