Central, State governments aligning with corporate interests, sidelining workers: Ramesh Chennithala

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) will lead strong protest movements against the Central and State governments that are aligning with corporate interests and sidelining workers, said senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Speaking at the inauguration of the INTUC Thrissur district leadership conference held at the Regional Theatre here on Sunday Mr. Chennithala criticised both governments for trampling labour laws and neglecting the rights of the working class. He particularly condemned the Pinarayi-led State government for reducing the number of workdays and failing to ensure minimum wages for labourers. Mr. Chennithala emphasised that a strong response would be mobilised by rallying public support against such anti-worker measures. The meeting was presided over by INTUC district president Sundaran Kunnathulli. INTUC State president R. Chandrasekharan delivered the keynote address.

Ramesh Chennithala urges Kerala govt to curb rising costs

T'puram: Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has urged the state govt urgently intervene in the market to address the issue of rising costs that are making life extremely difficult for people in Kerala. He accused the govt of trying to divert attention from the exploitation of the people by large corporates and multinational corporates (MNCs) by focusing on the Nilambur byelection. "The common man's life is becoming increasingly unbearable. The govt should stop ignoring the issue and take immediate action in the market. In Kerala, the price of coconut oil increased by Rs 70 per kg. Coconut is hard to find at a reasonable price. The price of rice rose by Rs 8 to Rs 15. The cost of all essential goods is skyrocketing. Every new batch of goods from MNCs sees a price increase. The govt is not paying attention to the market. They are creating social issues to divert public attention from the real problems," Chennithala said on Sunday. While inflation significantly decreased in India, it has doubled in Kerala, he said. "According to data from April 2025, the inflation rate in India is only 3.16%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo However, during the same period, Kerala recorded the highest inflation rate among Indian states at 5.9%. This indicates the uncontrolled price hikes of essential goods in Kerala. The state's finance department has completely failed. Not only did the debt increase, but the finance department also failed to control the price rise," he said. The govt has always effectively intervened in the market to control price hikes in Kerala. This was achieved by supplying essential goods through Maveli stores and Supplyco outlets. However, the govt is now in a state of complete failure, unable to manage even that. The govt should focus on the fundamental issues, demanded Chennithala. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . BJP replying to Rahul's Maharashtra poll questions instead of EC confirms match-fixing: Chennithala

BJP leaders replying to Rahul Gandhi's questions on the 2024 Maharashtra polls instead of the Election Commission of India confirms the "match-fixing" charge, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' article, with facts and figures to refute Mr. Gandhi's claims, was published in The Indian Express and the Marathi daily Loksatta during the day. Earlier, top BJP leaders, including party chief J.P. Nadda, had slammed Mr. Gandhi for casting aspersions on the country's electoral process. "BJP leaders are replying on behalf of the Election Commission, which is concerning. It only confirms that match-fixing did take place. Rahul Gandhi, in his detailed article, has exposed how the Maharashtra assembly elections were marred by fraud, manipulation, and a systematic violation of the people's mandate, amounting to a brutal assault on democracy," Mr. Chennithala said in a statement. The ECI must respond to serious questions raised by Mr. Gandhi, who has exposed a "disturbing truth", Mr. Chennithala said while asserting the happenings related to the state polls were not accidental but a meticulously-planned operation. "Maharashtra, once a beacon of democratic values, is now witnessing a deep erosion of those values. The Congress has been consistently following up with the Election Commission, but so far, the responses have been superficial and unsatisfactory," the AICC in charge for the state said. Mr. Chennithala said when the Chandigarh High Court ordered the release of CCTV footage in connection with the Haryana assembly polls, the Union government, with help from the EC, changed the rules and blocked that information. "Why was that done? And for whose benefit?" he asked. The Maharashtra polls involved manipulation in the voter list, large-scale bogus voting and artificial inflation of vote percentages, Chennithala alleged. "In the Lok Sabha election, Congress and its allies won a sweeping mandate. Then how could the outcome reverse so drastically within just five months? This reeks of electoral fraud," he said. The refusal to conduct a mock drill in Markadwadi (where some people sought a repoll after alleging EVM manipulation) itself is a sign that something was being hidden, he added. The BJP and EC are trying to hide the truth but the Congress will pursue it relentlessly till democratic integrity is restored, Chennithala asserted.

UDF ramps up attack on State govt. over NH corruption

The United Democratic Front (UDF) ramped up its attack on the State government on Thursday (June 5) by raising allegations of corruption and collusion in the construction of the National Highway and accusing it of blindly supporting the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala questioned the Chief Minister's silence on highway construction irregularities during his meeting with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The Chief Minister and Public Works Minister have remained mum on the issue despite meeting with the Union Minister, he said. 'Even CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan, who is known for speaking out, has stayed quiet,' said Mr. Chennithala. 'I am speaking about the corruption in a specific reach of NH in Kerala, where Adani reportedly made a profit of ₹867 crore. It is essential to investigate what happened in this case, and the other 22 stretches, too, should be studied,' he said. The Congress leader warned Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas not to assume that the Opposition was celebrating the NH collapse. 'The Minister did not do his job. So the Opposition had to point it out,' he said. 'The primary concern is the safety of the people, and it is the duty of the Opposition to point out the corruption.' Mr. Chennithala said that the Chief Minister and the PWD Minister were challenging the people of Kerala by failing to take up the vital issue of highway collapse with the Union Minister. He said the Pinarayi government was blindly supporting the BJP government at the Centre. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, who visited the collapsed highway at Kooriyad on Thursday, said that both the Central and State governments were responsible for the collapse of NH-66. Citing errors in alignment and ignoring warnings from locals and people's representatives, Mr. Joseph said that unscientific construction was the primary cause of the highway collapse. He said that K.C. Venugopal, MP, as chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC), had visited the site and sought explanations from officials and called for action. 'But the Kerala government has defended the construction and criticised Mr. Venugopal for pointing out the flaws,' he said. He lashed out at Mr. Riyas for not visiting the site and failing to take responsibility for the highway collapse.
