World Environment Day 2025: A global call to protect our planet

World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5, is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. Since its inception in 1973, the day has grown into a global platform, with participation from over 150 year, a different country hosts the event and a unique theme is chosen to highlight a pressing environmental concern. From combating plastic pollution to promoting biodiversity, these themes help raise awareness and mobilise change at both grassroots and global the years, World Environment Day has spurred major policy changes and community-led initiatives. From bans on single-use plastics to large-scale reforestation projects, it has served as a catalyst for environmental reforms. Educational institutions use the day to instill eco-conscious values in students, while businesses are encouraged to adopt greener practices and reduce their carbon footprint. As climate challenges become more urgent, the role of individuals has never been more critical. Simple steps like conserving water, minimising waste, embracing sustainable travel, and supporting eco-friendly brands can make a significant difference. World Environment Day reminds us that protecting the Earth is not just the responsibility of governments and organisations, it is a shared duty, and every action, no matter how small, contributes to a healthier planet for future generations."On this World Environment Day, as we rally to end plastic pollution, it's our young changemakers across India who hold the power to inspire real change. Through local actions—whether it's reducing plastic use, educating communities, or innovating sustainable alternatives—they're not just creating awareness but also leading the movement. At 1M1B, we believe these efforts deserve a global stage. That's why initiatives like the Changemakers World Cup serve as a launchpad, offering selected changemakers from across the country a chance to present their impact at the 1M1B Activate Impact Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York . Small steps taken in villages, towns, and cities today can echo globally tomorrow." Manav Subodh, Founder and Chief Mentor, 1M1B (One Million for One Billion)- UN accredited youth focused Rajasthan, the Forest Department—alongside JICA, BCG, and the Department of IT—is developing India's first Forest Data Exchange to drive rapid, data-informed interventions against forest degradation. Sushma Vasudevan, Managing Director and Partner at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG)The planet is facing multiple environmental crises, climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, pollution, and unsustainable consumption. World Environment Day serves as a crucial reminder that collective and individual actions both matter. Whether it's planting trees, reducing plastic usage, switching to renewable energy, or simply educating others, every effort this World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive future, driving change across India through our global vision of 'Progress for Humanity.' The choices we make today will shape a better, healthier environment for generations to come.' Puneet Anand, AVP & Vertical Head - Corporate Affairs, Corporate Communication & Social, Hyundai Motor India Limited'It isn't just about hitting sustainability targets—it's about building a circular economy that delivers measurable impact while opening up entirely new revenue streams for businesses across the value chain.' Ishita Bansal, Co-Founder and COO at Plannex RecyclingadvertisementGovernments, corporations, schools, NGOs, and citizens come together to organise tree plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, awareness workshops, and eco-friendly challenges. Social media campaigns amplify the message, urging people to rethink their relationship with nature."Office buildings, often seen as static backdrops to productivity, are in fact powerful levers for climate action. From how they are constructed to how they are operated, everything can be reimagined, through passive design, low-carbon materials, energy modelling, and adaptive reuse. This World Environment Day, the focus must move beyond green certifications and towards regenerative design that enables workplaces to give back more than they take." Sandhya Hegde, Head of Operations - Sustainable Solutions, Space recovered waste is transformed into high-quality raw materials, reused in packaging, and repurposed for various applications. Therefore, the solution lies in circularity: designing for recyclability, building recycling infrastructure, and promoting responsible consumption to reduce environmental impact.'
