Guernsey hotels 'hopeful' as inter-island ferry launches

The latest figures from Visit Guernsey showed passenger movements from Jersey were down by half between January and April 2025, compared to the same period in Walker, director of the Little Big Hotel Group and Vice President of the Tourism Management Board, said the Jersey market was "huge" for the bailiwick."I do wonder to a degree whether it's been ignored. If you consider in 2024, 67,000 in terms of passenger numbers between Guernsey and Jersey, so far towards the end of April the numbers are showing about 6,000" she said."So we're 50% down already, we've got to see at least 60,000 movements to match 2024, never mind see a growth in those numbers coming through. "We don't want to be sitting here talking about managed decline, we want to see an increase in these tours and numbers increasing going forward." Flights 'expensive' While hoteliers in the island claimed the number of people, especially from France, staying overnight had increased, Karel Harris, director of the Sarnia Hotel Group, said the number of people staying overnight from Jersey had 'disappeared'."It's a shame really because we used to have so many more staying visitors from Jersey but over the years the connectivity with the flights has become so expensive, so let's hope we see an increase again."Mr Murray, from Islands Unlimited, said the company was in touch with tourism and hospitality sectors in both islands."I think there is a market for everyone. We want to try and make it accessible and also meet the strategic obligations that the islands want in terms of growing their visitor economy.""There's a great opportunity and we just need to make sure that people are using it, if it is not sustainable then it's obviously not something that will be able to continue in the future."

New Channel Islands ferry service 'on track' for May launch
A new ferry service between the Channel Islands is "on track" for launch next month, the company behind it has firm Islands Unlimited is set to offer a daily inter-island foot passenger service between Guernsey and 316-passenger, high-speed catamaran San Pawl has been relaunched following out-of-water maintenance and surveys in operator said it would transfer the ferry from Malta to Guernsey at the beginning of next month in time for the beginning of the service on 30 May. It will be transported to the island using a specialist ship and bespoke Chad Murray, CEO of Islands Unlimited, said: "We are really pleased with the ship and impressed with her sea-keeping qualities and manoeuvrability."Whilst she is old in terms of age, her previous operator, Virtu Ferries, have clearly looked after her throughout her life and she continues to offer a safe and reliable option for inter-island foot passengers."A standard adult return fare is set to cost about £ schedule offers services running from 07:00 until 19:45 on weekdays, other than on Tuesdays when it stops at 16: will run from 07:00 until 21:45 at weekends.

Third firm offers ferry service in Channel Islands
The Channel Islands is set to be served by a third ferry firm after operator Islands Unlimited published its inter-island summer schedule. It follows a decision by Jersey and Guernsey's governments to choose different ferry firms to operate its sea links for the next 15 government opted for Danish firm DFDS, while Guernsey chose to stay with Condor - both have indicated they plan to operate limited services between the islands and timetables have not yet been published. Islands Unlimited manager director Chad Murray said: "We are excited that we will be offering a daily inter-island foot passenger service this summer." Mr Murray said a standard adult return fare with his firm would be priced at about £67. The firm's schedule offers daily services between Guernsey and Jersey, running from 07:00 GMT until 19:45 on weekdays (other than Tuesdays when it stops at 16:45).It will also run from 07:00 until 21:45 at weekends. Mr Murray said the new summer schedule would be subject to "some final discussions" with Ports of Jersey. The firm's boss said: "We want to meet the needs of the islanders, as well as visitors. "Following stakeholder engagement, this offers the best fit for the communities, commuters, local business, sport and event, as well as offering great day-trips for visitors to support tourism."Unlimited Islands has said its service could start in June. 'We are delighted' Chairman of the Guernsey Tourism Partnership, Ant Ford-Parker, said: "We are delighted that this bold initiative is nearing completion. "The implications for tourism as well as the local communities, are enormous. We wish them every success."The BBC has approached The States of Guernsey and the Jersey Government for comment.
