Japanese Director Yasuhiro Aoki's 'ChaO' Wins French Anime Award

Ⓒ2025 'ChaO' Committee Paris (Jiji Press)—Japanese director Yasuhiro Aoki's 'ChaO' won the Jury Award in the feature films category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in southeastern France on Saturday. 'ChaO' is a romance story between an office worker and a mermaid princess in a future society where humans and mermaids coexist. The film stars two actors Ouji Suzuka, who voices the office worker, and Anna Yamada, who plays the role of the mermaid princess. It is scheduled to hit the screen in Japan in August. In the short films category, Japanese director Ryo Orisaka's 'The Graffiti' received the Off-Limits Award, which recognizes films that explore experimental or unconventional anime techniques.

Japanese anime 'ChaO' wins award at global anime film festival in France

The Japanese animated film "ChaO" has won the second-place award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in southeastern France. The film directed by Aoki Yasuhiro was honored with the Jury Award in the feature films division on Saturday. The Annecy festival is one of the world's largest anime festivals. It attracts filmmakers from across the world to compete for the top prize, the Cristal Award, in separate categories, including the feature films and short films divisions. ChaO depicts a future society where humans and mermaids coexist. It is a love story involving a regular office worker and Princess Chao from the mermaid kingdom. The Paul Grimault Award in the feature films category went to "Dandelion's Odyssey," directed by Japanese-born Seto Momoko. She is now based in France and elsewhere. A French film, Arco, won this year's Cristal for a Feature Film. In 2017, Japanese films "Lu Over the Wall" directed by Yuasa Masaki and "In This Corner of the World" by Katabuchi Sunao won the top two awards in the feature films division.

Telling the coming-of-age story of a young boy with friends and aliens in the fictional town of Beach City, Steven Universe has been hugely popular for Cartoon Network, running for five seasons and 160 episodes. The new version will, however, not air on the network but on the Amazon streamer if it makes it to greenlight. Sugar will EP the sequel with producing partner Ian Jones-Quartey. ITV Studios Names Tim Carter Managing Director, Unscripted, U.K.

ITV Studios has named Tim Carter managing director, unscripted, U.K. Currently CEO of ITV Studios' MultiStory Media and Twofour production labels, Carter will take on the role in the summer from Angela Jain, who will join the Walt Disney Co. in the new role of head of content, Disney+ EMEA. Carter will assume responsibility for all of ITV Studios' unscripted business in the UK, which houses 11 labels.
