"We want dignity and upliftment for all castes," says BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi on caste census

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday criticised the Congress party, saying they have a habit of overlooking important issues. He said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the NDA is focused on inclusive development. During the press conference, Sudhanshu Trivedi said, 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, the cabinet has decided to conduct the census. In the press release, it was clearly stated that along with the census, for the first time in the history of independent India, a social, economic survey, and caste census will also be done. Congress party has a habit of overlooking important issues, whether it's Operation Sadbhav or CAA, etc ..Under PM Modi's leadership, the NDA stands for 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' (inclusive development).' He said that the party supports dignity and progress for all castes, but accused the Congress of spreading false claims about the caste census. He said Congress is wrongly using the example of Telangana, where only a survey is being done, not a full census. Trivedi also alleged that Congress, which ruled India for decades, kept power within one family and failed to support real economic development. 'Regarding the caste census, we want dignity and upliftment for all castes. However, the Congress party has a contrasting approach. They're citing the example of Telangana, but they need to understand that it's a survey underway, not a census. The Congress party, which ruled this country for three decades and never allowed anyone outside the family to hold key positions, is now spreading false narratives against the caste census. Congress hasn't worked towards holistic economic growth in any development project,' he added 'The notification of the caste census is done by the centre. The state cannot conduct a caste census. So, the States can only conduct a survey. Wherever the Congress comes to power, their 'Khata Khat' model is becoming a big challenge for the country's development,' Trivedi said. On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs. 'The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. Caste enumeration will also be done during the census. For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8th since independence. The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people. Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (ANI)

"Historic step": Union Minister Kishan Reddy lauds centre's decision to conduct caste census

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday lauded the centre's decision to conduct the 16th population census, which would include caste enumeration, and labelled it a 'historic step.' Advocating for the caste census, he said that the work at the policy level with regard to the welfare schemes, budget allocation, political reservations would be worked upon in a proper manner. 'The government of India has taken a historic step. Since Independence, the general census will entail a census of the backward classes. Today, the government of India has issued the notification. There will also be a caste census; it is a very big decision. After this, be it welfare activity, scheme, budget allocation, political reservation, everything will be worked upon in a proper manner,' Reddy told ANI. Speaking about the arrangements for the Covid-19 cases, Reddy said that he was visiting his Lok Sabha constituency (Secunderabad) and the hospitals here to inspect whether big hospitals have necessary arrangements for Covid cases. 'Recently, in a cabinet meeting, PM Modi directed all the ministers to visit big hospitals in their respective constituencies. It was to ensure that big hospitals had all the necessary arrangements for Covid this regard, today, I have come here to the Gandhi Hospital in my (Lok Sabha) constituency. The hospital's senior officials have assured me that the hospital is completely ready for the Covid patients,' the Union Minister said. On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.' "Complete absence of caste census in notification raises lots of doubts": Congress leader Supriya Shrinate

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Monday said that complete 'absence' of the term caste census in the government's gazette notification issued for 16th Census has raised questions over the mindset of the BJP on this subject. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate recalled that the government had earlier promised that a caste census will conducted by them. 'Census is a decadal exercise and it has been delayed which is why people are not able to get the benefits of government schemes. This is a routine notification. There is no mention of the caste census here, a promise that the government said would be fulfilled on April 30,' Shrinate said. Asserting that BJP has always opposed the idea of caste-based reservations, Shrinate pointed out that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have forced the government to conduct a caste census. 'BJP should be the last one talking about the SC/ST and OBC as they have historically been against the constitution... Pt. Nehru brought the first amendment to the constitution about reservation, but it was opposed by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee... RSS Chiefs opposed the reservations... This government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in September 2021 saying we are against the Caste Census,' she said. Earlier today, Congress General Secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over 'no mention' of caste census in the gazette notification for the population census by the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking, 'Has the Prime Minister changed his mind?' 'Today's gazette notification says only census will be done in late October of 2026 in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal and the rest of the country it will be done in March 2027. It does not talk of the word caste census. So my question is, has the Prime Minister changed his mind again? Why is there no mention of the caste census?' the senior Congress leader said while speaking to ANI. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification on Monday announcing that the 16th census will be carried out in snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from October 2026 and the rest of the country from March 2027. 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027,' the MHA notification read. The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On April 30, Union Minister Ashiwni Vaishnaw announced that the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided to include caste enumeration in the general census. (ANI)

"Has PM changed his mind?": Jairam Ramesh questions "no mention" of caste census in MHA notification

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Congress General Secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on Monday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over 'no mention' of caste census in the gazette notification for the population census by the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking, 'Has the Prime Minister changed his mind?' Jairam Ramesh also questioned the Union government over the budget allocation for the census, mentioning that it does not match the required amount. 'Today's gazette notification says only census will be done in late October of 2026 in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal and the rest of the country it will be done in March 2027. It does not talk of the word caste census. So my question is, has the Prime Minister changed his mind again? Why is there no mention of the caste census?' the senior Congress leader said while speaking to ANI. 'The budget allocation will take atleast Rs 9000 crore to Rs 10,000 crores by the government's own admission to carry out a normal census. The total allocation for the census commissioner this year, 2025-26, is only Rs 575 crore, so where is the additional money?' he added. Jairam Ramesh argued that the BJP has always been against reservation, citing past instances, such as opposition to the Mandal Commission. ''BJP withdrew support to the VP Singh government on the Mandal Commission in August 1991, and they started the Camandal agitation to counter the Mandal agitation. So let's not get into this history. I can also go into the history of how the RSS opposed the Constitution of India beginning November 1949, how Yogi Adityanath has opposed reservations, and how RSS leaders have opposed reservations,' he said. Jairam Ramesh also accused PM Modi of opposing the caste census in the past and terming those demanding it as 'urban naxals.' 'The Prime Minister has consistently opposed the caste census. On 28 April 2024, he called all those wanting a caste census. Urban naxals. They filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on 21st September 2021 saying that we are against a caste census and we have no intention of carrying out a caste census,' he said. The Congress General Secretary further advised that the caste census should be done by using the Telangana model. 'Congress wants the Telangana model to be adopted at the national level. In Karnataka, it is not just cast enumeration. It is also getting information on their socio-economic status and then working out indices of backwardness, ownership of assets, and their representation in the institutions of governance. It is not just enumeration, it's more than that,' he added. Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. On April 30, Union Minister Ashiwni Vaishnaw announced that the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided to include caste enumeration in the general census. The INDIA bloc, which had been constantly demanding the caste census, welcomed the decision, pressing that it should be conducted in a 'transparent and unbiased' manner. (ANI)
