Slade Cecconi pitches Guardians to 3-0 win over Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Slade Cecconi pitched a career-high seven innings and Emmanuel Clase escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics in the rubber game of their series Sunday. Cecconi (3-3) allowed six hits and a walk in his seventh start for Cleveland after making 17 for Arizona over the previous two seasons. Clase gave up a walk and singles to Tyler Soderstrom and JJ Bleday to load the bases before finishing for his second straight save and 18th in 21 opportunities. The Guardians grabbed a 2-0 lead against A's starter JP Sears (5-7) in the second. Angel Martínez walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gabriel Arias. Nolan Jones doubled in Arias. Steven Kwan singled and scored on a two-out base hit by David Fry in the fifth for the final run. Sears allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings. He is 1-5 in his last eight starts. Jack Perkins made his big league debut in the seventh for the A's and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Cleveland (39-37) finished 4-5 on its West Coast trip. Benson and Hinds homer, Reds win third straight, 4-1 over Guardians
CINCINNATI (AP) — Will Benson and Rece Hinds hit solo home runs as the Cincinnati Reds won their third straight game, 4-1 over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night. Brent Suter allowed four hits in three innings before five relievers combined to allow a run on four hits for the Reds, including a 1-2-3 sixth inning by Luis Mey (1-0). Lyon Richardson relieved Suter and allowed Daniel Schneemann's solo homer, his sixth, leading off the fifth to put the Guardians ahead 1-0. Slade Cecconi (0-1) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday for the Guardians after recovering from a left oblique strain he suffered during spring training. Cecconi allowed just two hits through four innings, but Benson tied the score 1-1 with his third homer leading off the fifth. Benson has homered in three straight games for the first time in his career. In the sixth, TJ Friedl doubled and scored on Santiago Espinal's single to put the Reds ahead. Espinal scored on Austin Hays' double off Cade Smith to make it 3-1. Cecconi gave up three runs on five hits in five innings, tying a career-high with eight Ks and no walks. With Friedl on second base with no outs in the sixth, Espinal showed bunt, then pulled the bat back and lined an RBI single to right to put the Reds ahead 2-1. Key stat Up next Luis Ortiz (2-4, 4.78) is scheduled to start Sunday for the Guardians against Andrew Abbott (2-0, 2.10) in the series finale.
