Darren Aronofsky eyes next film: Enters talks for 'Breakthrough'; Dwayne Johnson set for dark supporting role

Darren Aronofsky Academy-nominated director Darren Aronofsky is said to be in early talks to helm a new psychological drama called 'Breakthrough'. Deadline reports that Dwayne Johnson will be seen breaking away from his action-hero role to play a more complex and demanding part. The actor is not the lead but will reportedly play a central supporting character that is a new trajectory consistent with his increased desire to perform more complicated, character-oriented parts. The film follows an intriguing tale of Southern California in the early 2000s about a lonely young guy who is swept under the wing by a charismatic self-help guru. Under the surface of this inspiring figure, there is a master manipulator with a dark, hidden agenda. Fans of Johnson will next catch him in 'The Smashing Machine,' opening in theatres on October 3. The film represents a significant departure from Johnson's career, signaling a move toward more dramatic, independent fare. His production firm, Seven Bucks Productions, co-founded with longtime collaborator Dany Garcia is also behind Breakthrough in association with Stacey Sher's Shiny Penny Productions. While negotiations are on, Aronofsky is keeping pace. His next film, 'Caught Stealing', which features Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz will open in theatres this August. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On the Personal front Dwayne Johnson's career shift comes after he spoke publicly about a dramatic personal transformation. Caught Stealing trailer shows Matt Smith as you've never seen him before

Matt Smith looks worlds away from his Doctor Who days in the trailer for his next big screen appearance, Caught Stealing. The star of The Crown and House of the Dragon plays a punk hiding a huge criminal secret in the Darren Aronofsky film, where he'll star alongside Austin Butler. Here's all you need to know about the action-packed gangster film, which has just dropped its first trailer. Fans of Smith will see him rocking a very different look as a punk in the first trailer for Caught Stealing. He plays Russ, a punk from London who sports a red-and-orange dyed mohawk, studded jacket and a lot of chain jewellery in the film's first-look trailer. Russ tells his neighbour Hank, a burned-out ex-baseball player, that he has to return to London and asks him to take care of his cat - leaving Hank unwittingly plunged into a violent criminal underworld as he realises Russ's neighbourly request isn't quite as simple as it seems. The trailer shows Russ in a cash-and-goods stuffed lock-up, explaining to Hank his plan to keep $4m of stolen money while fending off the Russian mob, Puerto Rican and Jewish criminals intent on claiming it back. Set to a soundtrack of The Clash's Should I Stay or Should I Go, the trailer shows the action set in 90s New York City with Smith's character tearing around the roads in a car with the registration plate "RSS H0LE". Hank finds himself unexpectedly befriended by some of the criminals on his tail as he joins them for a family dinner, while others are a lot more menacing as they threaten him with guns and attack him in his own flat. It is the latest film from the director of The Whale, The Wrestler and Black Swan, and is due to be released in cinemas in August. Smith and Elvis star Austin Butler lead the film's cast, with Butler playing unsuspecting neighbour Hank who is drawn into Russ's criminal nightmare. Oscar nominee Butler's character Hank gives a Cockney accent his best shot as he says "Oi, what are you doing geezer!" to an underwhelmed Russ, who snarls: "Is that the best you can do?" However, Hank's baseball talents are more useful than his impersonations as he wields a bat at various different criminals throughout the trailer. Also heading up the cast is Zoë Kravitz as Hank's new girlfriend Yvonne, who he's keen to impress by proving he can handle the risky game he finds himself in. The rest of the cast includes Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio, Bad Bunny, Regina King, Griffin Dunne and D'Pharoah Woon-A-Tai. Caught Stealing is released in cinemas on 29 August, 2025.

Austin Butler and Zoe Kravits take on a life unknown in new film Caught Stealing. Watch trailer

Sony Pictures are bringing a whole bunch of confusion and action with their new film Caught Stealing, which will follow the life of Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler. Director Darren Aronofsky, who is known for films like Requiem for a Dream (2000), Black Swan (2010), The Whale (2022) and The Wrestler (2008), is in the driving seat of the narrative. The film features stars like Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny, Liev Schreiber, Regina King, Vincent D'Onfrio and Action Bronson. The trailer starts with introducing the protagonist, Hank, who is a bartender and is closing shop for the day when Yvonne (Zoe Kravitz) convinces him to go back to his place together. We meet his obnoxiously dressed neighbour Russ (Matt Smith), who is apparently going out of town and needs Hank to take care of his cat. Yvonne and Hank agree to what seems to be a simple enough assignment and take the cat with them. Soon enough some people come looking for Russ and assault Hank for not telling them where Russ is. They are not the only ones looking for Russ, though, and Colorado ( Bad Bunny) threatens to kill Hank if he doesn't speak up. ALSO READ: Who is the Next James Bond? Theo James, Henry Cavill, and Bridgerton stars lead the top 7 frontrunners to replace Daniel Craig as 007 Once Russ comes back, Hank confronts him and asks him about the entire mess. Russ takes him to a storage facility and shows him a tonne of stolen clothes and merchandise along with $4 million, which seems to be the reason why everyone is after Russ. He explains how everyone was 'supposed to get a cut: the Russians, the Puerto Ricans, and even the Hebrews'. All chaos ensues as Hank decides to drive into the storm rather than away from it while juggling his relationship with Yvonne, who is still wondering where they both stand romantically. Everyone under the sun starts chasing Hank, and the bartender fights back with whatever limited skill he has, considering this is a very strange world for him, and even surprises himself when he knocks one of the Russians out cold. Yvonne tells him, 'That I need a man who handles his stuff,' and Hank kisses her and says, 'I can handle this.' The trailer ends on a confusing and amusing note as Hank is seen eating dinner with the Hebrew gangsters (Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onfrio) who were chasing him. Caught Stealing will hit theatres on August 29.
