New Study Shows White Republicans Still Support Trump After Jan. 6 Because Of White Grievance…Also, Water Is Wet

Source: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI / Getty A recent study found that white Republicans who continued to support President Donald Trump after he instigated the Jan. 6 Capitol riot did so out of racial resentment and a feeling that white people are now on the losing end of systemic racism. Now, I know what you're thinking: of all the 'water is wet' news out there, this has to be the water-is-wettest . And yes, you would be correct. Still, the study published in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics serves the purpose of illustrating the power of white fragility — a phenomenon that is, apparently, so influential that it can cause a person who probably thinks of themself as a pro-police 'patriot' to decide inspiring an domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. government and its police officers does not constitute a deal breaker in selecting a commander in chief. From PsyPost: The researchers, based at Harvard University, were interested in understanding why some Republicans continued to back Trump after the January 6th attack, despite its unprecedented nature and broad condemnation. Prior studies had already shown that many Republicans did briefly disapprove of Trump after the insurrection, but those changes were relatively small and short-lived. This study set out to explain which members of Trump's base were more likely to remain supportive—and why. The authors theorized that a key reason for the uneven reaction among Republicans lies in how individuals perceive their group's place in American society. Specifically, they focused on white Republicans' beliefs about whether white people are experiencing growing discrimination and losing their historical dominance in American politics and culture. Previous research has shown that these perceptions, often referred to as 'racial status threat,' are linked to support for right-wing populism, political violence, and distrust in democracy. The researchers hypothesized that Republicans who feel this kind of threat would be less likely to withdraw support from Trump—even after he encouraged an attack on the U.S. Capitol. To test their idea, the team conducted a series of studies using multiple datasets. In the first study, they analyzed responses from more than 5,000 white Republicans surveyed just before and after January 6th, 2021. The survey, conducted by the Nationscape project, asked respondents about their support for Trump, including favorability and job approval. Importantly, it also asked how much discrimination respondents believed white people face in society. Source: Kent Nishimura / Getty What researchers found was, again, pretty damn predictable. Among white Republicans who don't happen to believe we have entered a new era of Caucasian Jim Crow, support for Trump dropped post-Jan. 6. Of white Republicans who believe white people are experiencing systemic racism in a country that is predominantly white and a government that is overwhelmingly white, support for the president who caused an insurrection on U.S. soil remained steadfast. In the second and third studies, researchers replicated this analysis using data from the Gallup World Poll and the Pew Research Center, respectively. Both databases surveyed Americans both before and after the Capitol riot, and both studies of those databases produced generally the same results: white people continued to support propagandist and riot instigators because they're really upset that white supremacy doesn't feel as potent to them as it used to be. (Obviously, I'm paraphrasing here.) More from PsyPost: To determine whether this pattern held over time, the authors examined four additional surveys conducted between 2021 and 2024. Across all these studies, the results were consistent: white Republicans who expressed strong disapproval of January 6th were generally less supportive of Trump, but that relationship was significantly weaker among those who felt white people were under threat. Even years after the Capitol riot, status threat continued to shape how white Republicans evaluated Trump's actions and political future. This is why Trump's anti-DEI propaganda has been so effective. It's why the white nationalist Great Replacement Theory has been so thoroughly embraced by MAGA Republicans, including GOP legislators. Trump spent months repeating factless claims that the 2020 election had been rigged against him, then he told his followers to go to the Capitol and 'fight like hell,' which they did. It's not any more complicated than that. Trump lied, influenced a terrorist attack, and got elected again a few years later by running a campaign designed to cater to white grievance and MAGA white delusion. Sad. Urmia-based 110 Indian students taken to Armenia

India has evacuated a batch of 110 Indian students from Iran's Urmia Medical University and taken them to neighbouring Armenia. The students will take a flight to New Delhi on Wednesday. India is also in talks with Turkmenistan that shares borders with Iran as well as Azerbaijan for evacuation of other Indians, ET has learnt. Interestingly, Azerbaijan shares strong ties with Israel. Baku has agreed to facilitate evacuation of Indians from Iran after New Delhi approached the Caucasian state. Several Eurasian states have evacuated their nationals via Azerbaijan. The development comes amid the escalating tension between Iran and Israel. Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for reasons of safety, through arrangements made by the embassy. Other residents who are self-sufficient in terms of transport have also been advised to move out of the city due to the developing situation. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) The Indian embassy in Iran remains continuously in touch with the community with a view to extend all feasible assistance, according to officials. Indian embassy officials in Tehran have been advised to stay indoors at their residences and are operating from there. It is also understood that, if necessary, Israel will assist India to evacuate nationals either through land or sea routes from Israel. Live Events More than 1,500 Indian students, most of them from Jammu and Kashmir, are studying in Iran. Tehran has said that though the airspace is closed over Iran, all land borders are open for safe evacuation of Indian nationals. "Given the current condition and the closure of the country's airports, as well as the request of many political missions to transfer their diplomats and nationals abroad, we inform that all land borders are open for crossing," the foreign ministry of Iran said in a statement. Tehran asked the Indian government to give the names, passport numbers and vehicle specifications of the people crossing the borders to its General Protocol Department. It also asked for the time of travel and the desired border, through which the person will exit the country, to make necessary arrangements for the safe travel of diplomats and other citizens.

There's one simple answer to why Donald Trump acts like that

Our country's current system of governance is one of a reality show, rather than an administration. To understand this production, we must understand what the lead actor understands. Donald Trump is running the presidency like a reality TV script. One consistent priority in reality TV is contention and conflict. If there is no conflict, the audience loses attention. Our lead actor craves attention, and thus must create conflict to keep us watching. Conflict engages the audience's emotions. The emotions that create the strongest engagement are anger and hate, which are responses to fear. Fear is deeply rooted in our brain's amygdala. Our amygdala evolved as a strong fight or flight response, because it was necessary for our survival in a dangerous world. Anger and hate require an object or stimulus to fear. If an object is not organically available, Trump creates one. It is important to the lead actor to control the fear messaging. He has to fabricate a fear that he claims will threaten your survival so that you will become angry and engaged in his narrative (or delusions). Constant reinforcement of fear messaging creates radicalization. This outcome was on display recently in Kansas City at the World War I Museum and Memorial, where a uniformed white supremacist group marched and expounded hate and anger speech. Understand that anger and hate are rooted in fear. In this case, the fear is of any person that doesn't look like them: white Caucasian. If people can be convinced to get angry and hate by a fabricated fear, then they have been radicalized. Radicalization leads to extreme views, which results in extreme actions. We witnessed this on Sept. 11, 2001, just as we did and on Jan. 6, 2021. The bottom line is the audience of Trump's reality script subscribes to his fabricated contention and conflict, which in fact has no basis in reality. Immigrants are not criminals, rapists and murders released from prisons and mental institutions. Researchers such as Jacob Stowell, professor of criminology and criminal justice at Northeastern University, have found that undocumented immigrants actually commit crimes at lower rates than natural-born citizens. A reality show script dictates that the fear must be maintained, whether facts support the narrative or not. Reality TV also requires constant upping the ante in order to maintain and increase the viewing audience. In our present script, this is done by building perceptions about the imagined enemies through stereotyping and false narratives. Facts don't matter once emotion has been triggered and the brain's amygdala has been engaged. The amygdala responds to threat, perceived or factual. Fear, hate and anger can be trained, but they always require an object or enemy (such as immigrants). The training continues with the 'America first' slogan, which can be translated as 'America against the world.' Again, another perceived enemy is created — the rest of the world. The more triggers and enemies that are created, the more the amygdala is engaged. That engagement leads to a stronger survival response, which increases the potential for radicalization. So given the expansion of enemies, the script must be closely guarded and not contrasted with factual evidence. If we can reframe the contentious reality script, we can change the paradigm from competitive to cooperative. Evolutionarily speaking, our species is a herding species and not predatory. We do better when everyone is a resource and not a competitor. We do not do well breaking our interactions down to winners and losers. The more people that thrive the more we all thrive. History has shown time and again that we are the victims of the casualties we create. Reframing the narrative should involve changing 'America first' to 'global partnering,' and immigrants should be recast as our workforce. Florida recently moved to lower the working age for children because of the loss of its immigrant workers. That would be sacrificing our children to our fear of immigrants. The U.S. sees lower unemployment rates when there is more immigration. Americans do not lose jobs to immigration. We are not conservative or liberals, or Republicans or Democrats. We are Americans, and we are all resources to further the United States as a global partner. We the people invite all nations to join us, optimizing our human resources to improve the quality of life for everyone.
