UP uses remote sensing to micro map floods for monsoon season
Lucknow: To understand and thereby prevent flooding during the monsoon season, the state govt, for the first time, has superimposed flood inundation maps generated through 20 years of remote sensing onto cadastral maps for micro-mapping of floods. The information was provided by relief commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami at a meeting to review flood preparedness in the state chaired by chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh. The chief secretary said that, as per the weather department's forecast, the monsoon is expected to break over eastern UP by June 20 and western UP by June 25. In light of this, Singh said flood preparedness at the village level should be ensured based on micro-mapping. He said that officials and personnel should be assigned duties at the flood control room and all flood posts should be established by June 20. A mock drill at the tehsil level will be conducted on June 26, and all 44 sensitive districts have to participate in it. Singh directed officials to carry out inspections and repair work of flood-prone villages and embankments by June 20. He further said that inlets and outlets of Amrit Sarovars should be cleaned, encroachments removed, and catchment areas improved. The emphasis was also placed on increasing awareness of water conservation under the 'Catch the Rain' campaign. The relief commissioner informed the chief secretary that 44 districts, 118 tehsils, 2,500 villages, and 5,600 hamlets in the state are flood-sensitive. Pre-deployment of rescue forces at the tehsil level was done for flood rescue, with 48 teams of 17 flood companies of PAC, 15 teams of SDRF, and 11 teams of NDRF pre-deployed in 74 highly sensitive tehsils. "Over 10,000 trained disaster friends will assist in search and rescue operations. For flood management, 18 highly sensitive districts have been allocated 50 lakh each, 12 sensitive districts 25 lakh each, and 14 generally sensitive districts 10 lakh each," he said. Reservoirs in Gujarat filled up to 44% of storage capacity: Govt
Gandhinagar: With the monsoon approaching, the Sardar Sarovar Dam was filled up to 53.04% of its storage capacity on Tuesday. Overall, the 207 reservoirs of the state have a storage capacity of 44.18%, the state govt informed. Exactly a year ago, on June 10, 2024, the storage capacity of reservoirs of the state stood at 40.81%, the govt said. A water resources department issued a statement saying that storage in 17 reservoirs of central Gujarat was 44.08% of its total capacity. South Gujarat's 13 reservoirs had a storage of 43.25%, north Gujarat's 15 reservoirs were filled up to 29.38% of their capacity, Saurashtra's 141 reservoirs had 28.10% storage, and Kutch's 20 reservoirs had a storage of 27.57%. Six reservoirs in the state were filled between 70% to 100%, 20 reservoirs between 50% to 70%, and 71 reservoirs between 25% to 50%. As a result, sufficient water was provided to meet the needs of citizens in rural and urban areas during the summer, the govt said. The statement said that as a result of campaigns like the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan, Gujarat has become self-reliant in water management. A state-wide project of 'Catch the Rain' has also been launched, the govt added.

Visit aspirational dists, spend at least 24 hrs: PM Modi to ministers
PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi Wednesday asked all ministers to visit aspirational districts and blocks and spend at least 24 hours there, The Indian Express has learnt. This was conveyed during the meeting of the Union Council of Ministers, the first after Operation Sindoor, under the PM's chairmanship and went on for over three-and-a-half hours. Catch the Rain: GB Nagar departments told to submit progress and plans
Gautam Budh Nagar dstrict magistrate Manish Kumar Verma on Monday directed all departments to submit geo-tagged reports of their ongoing and completed works under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan, in a decisive push for rainwater conservation ahead of the monsoon season, officials said. He also ordered the preparation and submission of department-specific water conservation plans. The directives were issued during a high-level review meeting chaired by the DM to assess the implementation of the 'Catch the Rain' campaign in the district. The campaign, focused on increasing groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting, is being implemented as a joint initiative by the central and state governments. 'This is a priority initiative at both the state and national levels. All departments must ensure their activities are monitored, geo-tagged, and updated regularly on the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) portal. Officers must personally ensure that the data uploaded is accurate and timely,' DM Verma said. The DM directed that rooftop rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS) be made operational and functional in all government and semi-government buildings, including office complexes, primary schools, anganwadi centres, community health centres, panchayat bhawans, and high-rise residential societies. Additionally, parks and public places in urban areas must adopt effective rainwater collection mechanisms. As of May 2025, approximately 100 high-rise buildings across Gautam Budh Nagar have functional rainwater harvesting systems, according to groundwater department records. Among government establishments, around 60% have operational systems in place. 'Of nearly 1,900 government buildings in the district, 1,380 are currently equipped with functional rainwater harvesting systems. We are planning to conduct fresh audits by the end of June to reassess the status,' said Ankita Rai, hydrologist at the groundwater department. 'While there is no formal deadline for completing installations, our department is focused on raising awareness among residents and institutions. We encourage proactive adoption of rainwater harvesting and regular maintenance of existing systems to ensure long-term functionality,' she added. The DM also said that traditional water bodies must be revived. He instructed officials to carry out de-silting, cleaning, and restoration of ponds and rivers, including clearing obstructions from Amrit Sarovars. 'Renovation of traditional water sources, borewell recharge, watershed development, and plantation along rivers and ponds should be key areas of focus under the campaign,' he said. Officials said that a special afforestation drive will be conducted along the banks of the Hindon in coordination with the forest department. The irrigation department was told to coordinate with forest officials to undertake plantation on a large scale near ponds and riverbanks. 'Other departments carrying out plantation must also ensure their data is uploaded to the Jal Shakti portal,' the DM added. He also instructed development authorities and municipal bodies to install water treatment plants at locations where untreated sewage water is being discharged into ponds, to prevent groundwater contamination. He also called on the education department and groundwater department to run widespread awareness campaigns and ensure that water conservation becomes a mass movement. The progress of such outreach must also be recorded and updated on the JSA portal, he said.
