Josef Newgarden's Indy 500 race is over with 25th-place finish
Josef Newgarden's attempt to become the first driver to win three consecutive Indianapolis 500s fell short. The 34-year-old Tennessean finishes 25th after starting from the last row on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. He suffered a fuel pressure issue after a Lap 133 pit stop. Advertisement "Tried to be methodical," Newgarden told the Fox broadcast. "I just wish we had a chance to fight for it." He had steadily improved his race position after starting 32nd: 10th at Lap 80 and 6th at Lap 130. Newgarden held back as the green flag flew, careful to avoid any issues with cars ahead. He worked his into the upper half of the field by Lap 50. His car failed inspection during second-day qualifying, and IndyCar star sent him — after qualifying for the Fast 12 the previous day — to the back row, along with Team Penske teammate Will Power. Has anyone won the Indianapolis 500 three straight years? Five others previously sought a three-peat, with results ranging from tantalizingly close to tragic. Here's how those drivers fared. No one had a better opportunity to win three straight Indy 500s. Castroneves won his rookie and second seasons at IMS, then qualified for the pole in 2003. He shares the all-time victories lead with A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. Unser started the 1972 race 19th and crossed the finish line in 3rd place, though Mark Donahue dominated the field, winning by more than 3 minutes. The morning after the race, officials penalized the runner-up, Jerry Grant, for taking on fuel late in the wrong from the wrong pit stall. That moved Unser up to 2nd. Vukovich started the 1955 from the 5th position and led 50 of the first 56 laps before being killed in a Lap 57 crash involving five drivers. Rose was not a factor in 1949, starting 10th and finishing 13th. The three-time race champ crashed in 1941 while leading on Lap 152, suffering a back injury and getting drenched in fuel from his ruptured gas tank. Who has won the Indy 500 the most? Helio Castroneves, Josef Newgarden chase history
The Indianapolis 500 has been held almost every year since 1911. During that time, it's crowned numerous legends in the motor sports world. Despite its lengthy existence though, we've never seen anyone win more than four times. That could change this year though. Helio Castroneves won his fourth Indy 500 in 2021, 12 years after his third victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He also has two runner-up finishes, a third-place finish, and in 2024, he finished in 20th place. The legendary driver from Brazil has the track record to make history in 2025, but his competition certainly won't make it easy on him. The Team Penske driver is the back-to-back Indy 500 champion and seeks to become the first driver to win the iconic race three years in a row. But in the leadup to Sunday's race, the Newgarden is drawing attention for another reason: the controversy during qualifying and the fallout at the organization. The IndyCar Series determined Team Penske made illegal modifications to some of their cars, including Newgarden's, during qualifying and penalized the drivers by forcing them to start at the rear of the field for Sunday's race, while also issuing fines. Roger Penske, who owns the race team along with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, fired the entire leadership of his IndyCar team in the wake scandal, making Newgarden's attempt at a three-peat even more difficult. Here are the five fastest races in Indy 500 history
The 2025 Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 25. Can it produce another speed record? Raw speed is rarely the key to setting a race record over 200 laps on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. It's the number of laps run under the green flag. The more caution laps in a race, the slower the overall race speed. 2025 starting grid: A complete guide to the 33-car lineup Here are the fastest Indy 500s. There were just two caution periods for 18 laps, and the last 76 laps were run under green. Castroneves beat Alex Palou over the Yard of Bricks by about one-half second to earn his record-tying fourth Indy 500 win. Dario Franchitti's crash on Lap 198 forced this race to finish under caution, though just 21 laps were run under yellow. This race featured a record 68 passes for the lead. There were five caution periods totaling 21 laps. Hunter-Reay held off Helio Castroneves in a seven-lap shootout following the final caution period by less than one-tenth of a second. Luyendyk was well in control of a race that featured four caution periods totaling 28 laps. The final 54 laps were run under green, and he led from Lap 168 to the end, winning by more than 10 seconds. Mears earned his fourth Indy 500 title in convincing fashion, overtaking Michael Andretti on Lap 188 and winning by more than 3 seconds. There were seven cautions totaling 35 laps. As you might expect, Ray Harroun won the first Indy 500 in 1911 at 74.602 mph. Eddie Cheever completed a lap in the 1996 race at 236.103 mph.
