Nearly €40k raised for young Cork woman battling leukaemia
Dawn Kearney, 19, from Ballinhassig in County Cork was recently diagnosed with leukaemia and a fundraiser has been launched by her local GAA club to help the family pay for treatment. The original target of €6,000 was achieved within hours following over 900 donations. Donations are continuing to pour in, with the current figure standing at €37,156 at the time of writing. Ms Kearney has been described as a bright, kind and resilient soul who is fighting the illness with strength and grace. Organisers of the fundraiser have emphasised that any donation, no matter how small will help the Kearney family and the money raised will be used to cover hospital stays, specialised treatment and other day-to-day expenses. The GoFundMe page reads: "We're reaching out on behalf of a courageous young woman named Dawn. At just 19 years old, Dawn has been diagnosed with leukaemia — a life-altering challenge no one should face, especially so early in life. "Dawn is a bright, kind, and resilient soul with a whole future ahead of her. While she is bravely fighting this illness with strength and grace, the emotional and financial toll it places on her and her family is immense. "Treatment for leukaemia is long, intense, and often unpredictable. Hospital stays, medications, doctor visits, and the need for specialised care are only part of the burden. "This fundraiser is a way for us all to come together - to show Dawn and her family that they are not alone. Every donation, no matter the size, will help ease the financial pressure they are facing and allow them to focus on what matters most: Dawn's healing and recovery." The Kearney family said they have been 'completely' blown away by the level of generosity and support since the fundraiser was established. 'We are so grateful of the support that has been shown to Dawn in the last 24 hours. We are completely blown away by the level of generosity and support. We cannot put into words our gratitude to everyone and what this means to Dawn and all the family. From the bottom of our hearts thank you so much to every single person.' Dawn is facing a tough battle with leukaemia at just 19-years-old. 'Your support, no matter how small, can really make a difference in easing the financial burden on her family and allowing them to focus on her healing. It would mean so much to Dawn and everyone who cares about her.' Dawn's brother Shane played underage football with Castlehaven up to junior level, while her father Diarmuid was a selector with the Castlehaven senior football team. Posting on social media, Castlehaven GAA said: 'Dawn is a member of the Kearney family who are great supporters of the club. Her father Diarmuid was a selector with the Castlehaven senior team and her brother Shane played underage up to junior with Castlehaven. He also played with most of the present senior panel. The club is asking members and supporters to please make a donation to help Dawn in her recovery.'

John Cleary rues Cork losing midfield battle to Meath
Cork manager John Cleary rued losing the midfield battle and giving up too many turnovers as his side began their All-Ireland series with a defeat in Navan. If losing possession was the problem towards the end of the first half, not winning enough of it in the kick-out battles in the second was the reason for the defeat. 'They got the grips around the middle definitely,' admitted Cleary, 'And I think that was ultimately why they won the game, really. 'We had a lot of that possession in the first half and possession was key out there. Scores were at a premium, the weather turned terrible but once you had possession, you were denying the other team a chance to get a score.' In the first half, Cork had led by three against the elements but finished the half three behind. 'We had too many turnovers, and we were completely on top, and that was a strong wind there, and probably turnovers killed us,' said the Castlehaven man. 'Then they went down and got a goal and a couple of points before half-time. 'In the second half, we came back and levelled it but they bossed the game there from there mostly to the end. I think for the last 20 minutes, was it five points to one or something, we only scored a point after we levelled it.' For fear of breaching the three-up rule, Cork's joint topscorer Chris Óg Jones checked himself and pulled out of a tackle in the lead-up to Jordan Morris's goal for Meath. 'I don't think anyone told him,' Cleary recalled. 'He maybe was afraid he'd give a two-pointer or whatever and I think we had three up besides him. But that was at halfway, like, they broke very quickly, and, look, in fairness, it was a good finish by them and a good goal.' Mattie Taylor failed to finish the game with an injury and the current unavailable list include Brian Hurley, Conor Corbett, Tommy Walsh and Seán Walsh, whose presence in midfield was sorely missed in Páirc Tailteann. Cleary couldn't say if those who didn't tog out will be fit for Kerry at home next Saturday. 'We'll know now during the week. They weren't fit today now, so we'll just take it week by week.'

Cork boss John Cleary pleased with ‘block of work done' in second pre-season period
'We've been happy the way the last three or four weeks went,' the Castlehaven man said John Cleary hopes a 'second pre-season' over the past five weeks will stand to Cork as they embark on their All-Ireland Series campaign. The Rebels have recorded some major group-stage scalps in the past two seasons, taking down Mayo and Donegal. But just as significant were their hard-earned first-round victories over Louth and Clare, both won by two points, to ease the pressure and build that momentum.

Ricken makes two changes to Cork side for Munster decider with Kerry
Cork have made two changes to the side that defeated Tipperary for Friday evening's Electric Ireland Munster MFC final against Kerry in Austin Stack Park, Tralee, throw-in at 7.35pm. Following a dramatic extra-time away victory over a strong Premier outfit that was secured courtesy of a last-minute Joe Miskella goal, manager Keith Ricken has given starts to Eoin Looney in place of Jerry O'Leary while Daniel McCarthy comes in for Paddy Murphy after the Donoughmore attacker went off injured in the Tipp contest. The provincial decider is a rematch of the quarter-final when Kerry inflicted a 10-point defeat on their neighbours in Páirc Uí Rinn, so the Rebels can expect a tough assignment. At the same time, they will be focused on lessons learned. Kerry have the upper hand when it comes to underage football in Munster, their semi-final was won by a convincing 3-16 to 0-9 triumph over Clare with second-half goals from captain Gearóid White (2) and Kevin Griffin decisive.
