Chiefs Exuding Confidence in Mahomes Backup
Chiefs Exuding Confidence in Mahomes Backup originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs will have a new backup quarterback on the roster this season, but like in years past, it is someone with a lot of NFL experience under their belt. Advertisement Last year Carson Wentz sat behind superstar Patrick Mahomes on the depth chart. This year, it will be free agent signee Gardner Minshew. Head coach Andy Reid believes Minshew's veteran presence will greatly benefit Mahomes and the offense. "He's been there — he's started, so he's got that,' Reid said in a press conference. 'He's got the confidence of the guys around him. Patrick knows he's been in there and done it, so they can bounce things off of each other." Minshew likely won't have trouble adapting to the unique offensive scheme Reid and Mahomes have been carving up defenses with for years in KC. Advertisement Minshew is a product of the "air raid" system in college under then Washington State head coach Mike Leach. Mahomes played under a similar philosophy at Texas Tech, the place Leach first introduced the revolutionary offense to the college ranks. After one season with the Las Vegas Raiders, Minshew joins his fourth team in four years, but Reid believes that experience in invaluable - wherever it is from in the NFL. "It's always good to have peers that have played, and you can talk to them about it a little bit," Reid added. "I think on game day he'll be great with Patrick, just with what he's seeing from the sideline and what Pat's seeing when he's in there.' Minshew has started in 22 of the last 27 games he's played in over the last two seasons. While he won't see that much action in Kansas City (ideally), he'll be able to recognize defenses to offer Mahomes insight, having seen them on the field recently. Advertisement The 29 year old is a former sixth round pick in 2019 of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last year was one of his worst statistical seasons of his career, throwing for 10 interceptions and over 1,000 less yards than his 2023 campaign. He's often a viral internet sensation with his boisterous locker room personality and electric mustache. That energetic presence, along with football knowledge, hopes to make an impact on a Chiefs team that is on the precipice of making a fourth consecutive Super Bowl appearance. New Eagles QB is already on thin ice (and training camp hasn't arrived yet)
We may never again see another NFL team hand another more talented quarterback prospect than the Cleveland Browns have given to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Brownies drafted Tim Couch first overall in 1999. The Birds took Donovan McNabb one pick later. The rest, as they say, is history. Then, there was the trade in 2016. Cleveland dealt the second-overall pick to Philadelphia, and with it, the Eagles acquired Carson Wentz. Say what you will about Carson. He set the table for the Birds' first Super Bowl win. Advertisement The Dorian Thompson-Robinson/Kenny Pickett trade wasn't as impactful as landing Donovan or Carson, but it still feels like Philadelphia won out. After all, they earned a fifth-round selection out of the deal. What's strange is that Kenny may make the Browns' roster, and the ceiling for Thompson-Robinson may be a practice squad job, because both are skating on thin ice thanks to a couple of late-round rookies. Kyle McCord's presence on the Eagles roster could spell doom for Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Nothing lasts forever in the NFL, but Pickett and Thompson-Robinson have to be telling themselves that one season would be nice. The former is suffering from 'Shedeur Sanders envy'. The latter seemingly lost his job to Kyle McCord before either played a snap. Advertisement McCord hasn't technically won the job yet, but then again, Philadelphia invested draft capital. That says a lot, and when the rookie stepped on the field to take some reps as the third quarterback, he certainly made the most of his opportunity. It's only June. Training camp hasn't started yet, so there's a long way to go. There are, however, a couple of growing theories, and they might be accurate. Somehow, it feels like we've already seen Thompson-Robinson's ceiling, and McCord might have more natural talent. It seems unlikely that either will play this season in a game that matters, but that isn't the point. Advertisement This is Philadelphia, and a battle for the third quarterback job is just as interesting as any other. Keep an eye on this one as we move through the summer, but if anyone is taking wagers, it's wise to place one on Kyle McCord. Former Chiefs Quarterback Shares Awesome Update With Fans
With just over two months to go before the start of training camps across the NFL, Carson Wentz is still a man without a team. He was a backup quarterback last season behind Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs, but his experience over the years may allow him to get picked up by a squad before it is too late. Advertisement In the meantime, he seems to be enjoying himself. In a post on his official Instagram account, he mentioned that he spoke at two Christian conferences with linebacker Drue Tranquill, a teammate of his last season, in his native North Dakota. "Another fun trip back to North Dakota!" Wentz wrote. "Was honored to speak alongside good friend @druetranquill at @goevangel's Men's Conference followed by our annual @ao1foundation event in Bismarck. It's always fun getting to interact with the kids we are serving through the AO1 Foundation!" Not too long ago, Wentz was one of the NFL's brightest young quarterbacks. Advertisement The Philadelphia Eagles took him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft, and the following year, he threw for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns in 13 games and made the Pro Bowl as he helped the Eagles establish themselves as a legitimate championship contender. Unfortunately for him, he suffered a torn ACL in Week 14, which ended his season. He had to sit and watch as backup Nick Foles stepped into the QB1 spot and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl championship. Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports Wentz suffered additional injuries over the next few years, which robbed him of much of his ability. By the 2023 campaign, he had been reduced to being a backup. Advertisement It looked like he would pick up a championship ring last year with Kansas City, but the team got blown out in Super Bowl LIV. Ironically, it lost there to the Eagles, Wentz's former employer. Related: Baker Mayfield's Wife Had No Words After Buccaneers QB's Announcement
