These 4 Mets prospects stood out during the team's Spring Breakout victory
It was about as small as a sample size as there can be, but Sunday's Spring Breakout game provided Mets fans with a fun glimpse into the potential of the club's minor league talent. A retooled Mets farm system, highlighted by first round picks Jett Williams and Carson Benge, along with acquired talent in Ryan Clifford, provided an extra sense of optimism in a 5-1 win over the Nationals at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches. New York Mets first baseman Ryan Clifford (87) works during a Spring Training workout on Feb. 12, 2025, at Clover Park. The Mets received home runs from Clifford and Boston Baro in the victory. Clifford's long ball may have been the highlight as he blasted a pitch from the Nats' Jackson Kent more than halfway up the batter's eye in straightaway center field. Advertisement It was one explosive play in a series of encouraging performances for the Mets' youth. Here are four other prospects who stood out in their opportunity to showcase their skills: Boston Baro Position: Third base The Mets' No. 14 prospect opened the scoring for the Mets prospects with an opposite-field home run off lefty Alex Clemmey to lead off the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning with Jonathan Santucci on the mound for the Mets, Baro showcased his glove, jump-starting a double play with a ball hit to his left for the first two outs of the frame. Baro, a 20-year-old who was drafted in the eighth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Capistrano Valley High School in California, added a single to finish 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jonah Tong Position: Starting pitcher Advertisement It was not all pretty for the Mets' No. 6 overall and No. 3 pitching prospect, but he managed to work through the opening two innings without any damage. He worked around a walk and a single in the bottom of the first inning when he froze Caleb Lomavita on a knee-high breaking ball. Tong, the 21-year-old right-hander who closed the season with two starts in Double-A Binghamton, also stranded a runner in scoring position in the second, picking up back-to-back strikeouts. Tong's fastball registered in the upper-90s. Nick Morabito Position: Center field The Mets' reigning Minor League Player of the Year showcased some of what made him such a dangerous threat atop the lineup in St. Lucie and Brooklyn last season. Advertisement After singling in the third inning, the 21-year-old outfielder — the Mets' No. 18 prospect — cashed in with the bases loaded, knocking a two-run single into right field. He stole second base during the Mets' next at-bat. In between his two stops in the minor leagues last season, Morabito tallied 59 stolen bases — 11 in St. Lucie and 48 with Brooklyn. Carson Benge Position: Right field One of the first glimpses of the Mets' latest first-round pick from 2024 provided a reason for optimism. Benge, who played 17 games for Single-A St. Lucie late last season, reached base in two of his three at-bats on Sunday.
