According to Carter Bahns of the one player that is the x-factor for the Hurricanes to make the playoffs this season is, surprisingly, transfer cornerback Xavier Lucas. That moniker should fall squarely on the shoulders (and the surgically repaired throwing elbow) of former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck. Advertisement Beck passed for over 3,400-yards a season ago. He also threw 12 interceptions, eight of which were thrown over three consecutive games. Beck transferred after suffering the season-ending elbow injury. Then, Miami swooped in with millions and lured Beck to Florida. After an offseason of injury rehab and way-too-many distractions, Beck must step up and show what he can do at the most important position on the field during fall camp and during the season. Anything less than a conference championship and a playoff berth in 2025 will be a bust for the Hurricanes. ESPN makes 2025 Georgia football record prediction
The Georgia Bulldogs could be facing an SEC championship rematch in 2025, according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI). The Texas Longhorns (34.1%) and Georgia (26.9%) have the two best odds to win the SEC per FPI's estimate. The Alabama Crimson Tide (17.2%) are the only other SEC team with more than a 5% chance to win the conference. Interestingly, Georgia is scheduled to play both Texas and Alabama at home this season. Of course, playing Texas and Alabama on the road did not stop the Bulldogs from making the 2024 SEC championship where UGA went on to beat Texas in overtime. Texas, Georgia and Alabama are the top three teams in ESPN's FPI metric. They are also the three teams with the best chance to win the national championship along with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Key FPI Metrics Bottom Line ESPN's FPI is pretty high on Georgia entering the 2025 season despite all of the talent that Georgia lost. The Bulldogs lost 13 players to the 2025 NFL draft and had several more key contributors go undrafted. Georgia's 2025 team does not have as much experience as the Dawgs have had in previous years. Georgia will also be trotting out a new starting quarterback in Gunner Stockton. Georgia lost starting quarterback Carson Beck to the transfer portal in the winter. Beck and outside linebacker Damon Wilson highlight 20 Georgia players that left via the transfer portal. Coach Kirby Smart did bring in 10 transfers, but there's no doubt that the Bulldogs lost a lot of key players to the portal. Georgia will have a new look in the trenches. The Dawgs had a trio of interior offensive linemen drafted and lost their six leading sack producers from the 2024 season to the draft or transfer portal. Despite all the turnover, the standard remains the same in Athens. Georgia has a more manageable schedule in 2025 and winning 10 games during the regular season and returning to the College Football Playoff is a very achievable goal for the Dawgs. That being said, the year ended somewhat disappointingly as Miami had a prime opportunity to make it the College Football Playoff. Nevertheless, a late-season loss to Syracuse cost them that opportunity. Cristobal will look to take that next step in 2025, as he has in his first three years. According to On3 national recruiting/transfer portal reporter Hayes Fawcett, Miami football has received commitments from defensive lineman Tyson Bacon and interior offensive lineman Canon Pickett. Bacon chose Mario Cristobal's program over Georgia, Florida, and Ohio State, while Pickett committed over Florida and ACC foe Clemson. Carson Beck is now under center at Miami football, and the former All-SEC quarterback has the talent to lead this program to its first College Football Playoff. Beck, however, cannot show the inconsistencies he did during his time with Georgia, especially out of the gates, because the Hurricanes have a formidable nonconference schedule in 2025. The Fighting Irish, coming off an appearance in the National Championship game, will likely be favored in this Week 1 clash. A few weeks later, the Hurricanes will take on a Florida team that should be much better than the squad they took on in Gainesville last season. The ACC slate is more forgiving with Clemson, which is projected to be the favorite in the conference, not on the slate. But SMU, which is coming off a shocking appearance in the playoff, will host Mario Cristobal's team later in the season. Overall, Miami football are adding Tyson Bacon and Canon Pickett to what is now a top-10 2026 recruiting class. Cristobal has been well-known for his ability to recruit throughout his successful career, and that talent has paid dividends with this historic program. During his final season with the Bulldogs, Beck completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
